Indeed, the bond between Laura and her mother is not only tight but heroic. Her mother, after losing her first two children at their births, pronounces Laura her "victory." Laura was born so tiny it was unlikely she would live. With the help of the March of Dimes, she not only survived but thrived well beyond expectations. Yet she is haunted by her narrow escape from the fate of her two siblings, and jolted by subsequent near misses and losses. In this memoir, Laura learns to cultivate gratitude and courage within loss. She reaches for the blessings of sustaining love from family, her faith, and her life's work, emerging victorious in her own right.

Book excerpt: The complex, deeply binding relationship between mothers and daughters is brought vividly to life in Katie Hafner’s remarkable memoir, an exploration of the year she and her mother, Helen, spent working through, and triumphing over, a lifetime of unresolved emotions. Dreaming of a “year in Provence” with her mother, Katie urges Helen to move to San Francisco to live with her and Zoë, Katie’s teenage daughter. Katie and Zoë had become a mother-daughter team, strong enough, Katie thought, to absorb the arrival of a seventy-seven-year-old woman set in her ways. Filled with fairy-tale hope that she and her mother would become friends, and that Helen would grow close to her exceptional granddaughter, Katie embarked on an experiment in intergenerational living that she would soon discover was filled with land mines: memories of her parents’ painful divorce, of her mother’s drinking, of dislocating moves back and forth across the country, and of Katie’s own widowhood and bumpy recovery. Helen, for her part, was also holding difficult issues at bay. How these three women from such different generations learn to navigate their challenging, turbulent, and ultimately healing journey together makes for riveting reading. By turns heartbreaking and funny—and always insightful—Katie Hafner’s brave and loving book answers questions about the universal truths of family that are central to the lives of so many. Praise for Mother Daughter Me “The most raw, honest and engaging memoir I’ve read in a long time.”—KJ Dell’Antonia, The New York Times “A brilliant, funny, poignant, and wrenching story of three generations under one roof, unlike anything I have ever read.”—Abraham Verghese, author of Cutting for Stone “Weaving past with present, anecdote with analysis, [Katie] Hafner’s riveting account of multigenerational living and mother-daughter frictions, of love and forgiveness, is devoid of self-pity and unafraid of self-blame. . . . [Hafner is] a bright—and appealing—heroine.”—Cathi Hanauer, Elle “[A] frank and searching account . . . Currents of grief, guilt, longing and forgiveness flow through the compelling narrative.”—Steven Winn, San Francisco Chronicle “A touching saga that shines . . . We see how years-old unresolved emotions manifest.”—Lindsay Deutsch, USA Today “[Hafner’s] memoir shines a light on nurturing deficits repeated through generations and will lead many readers to relive their own struggles with forgiveness.”—Erica Jong, People “An unusually graceful story, one that balances honesty and tact . . . Hafner narrates the events so adeptly that they feel enlightening.”—Harper’s “Heartbreakingly honest, yet not without hope and flashes of wry humor.”—Kirkus Reviews “[An] emotionally raw memoir examining the delicate, inevitable shift from dependence to independence and back again.”—O: The Oprah Magazine (Ten Titles to Pick Up Now) “Scrap any romantic ideas about what goes on when a 40-something woman invites her mother to live with her and her teenage daughter for a year. As Hafner hilariously and touchingly tells it, being the center of a family sandwich is, well, complicated.”—Parade

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Running from her father’s brutal legacy, Joseph Stalin’s daughter defects to the United States during the turbulence of the 1960s. For fans of We Were the Lucky Ones and A Gentleman in Moscow, this sweeping historical novel and unexpected love story is inspired by the remarkable life of Svetlana Alliluyeva. “The Red Daughter does exactly what good historical fiction should do: It sends you down the rabbit hole to read and learn more.”—The New York Times Book Review In one of the most momentous events of the Cold War, Svetlana Alliluyeva, the only daughter of the Soviet despot Joseph Stalin, abruptly abandoned her life in Moscow in 1967, arriving in New York to throngs of reporters and a nation hungry to hear her story. By her side is Peter Horvath, a young lawyer sent by the CIA to smuggle Svetlana into America. She is a contradictory celebrity: charismatic and headstrong, lonely and haunted, excited and alienated by her adopted country’s radically different society. Persuading herself that all she yearns for is a simple American life, she attempts to settle into a suburban existence in Princeton, New Jersey. But one day an invitation from the widow of the architect Frank Lloyd Wright arrives, and Svetlana impulsively joins her cultlike community at Taliesin West. When this dream ends in disillusionment, Svetlana reaches out to Peter, the one person who understands how the chains of her past still hold her prisoner. Their relationship changes and deepens, moving from America to England to the Soviet Union and back again, unfolding under the eyes of her CIA minders, and Svetlana’s and Peter’s private lives are no longer their own. Novelist John Burnham Schwartz’s father was in fact the young lawyer who escorted Svetlana Alliluyeva to the United States. Drawing upon private papers and years of extensive research, Schwartz imaginatively re-creates the story of an extraordinary, troubled woman’s search for a new life and a place to belong, in the powerful, evocative prose that has made him an acclaimed author of literary and historical fiction. Praise for The Red Daughter “Svetlana Alliluyeva’s life was endlessly fascinating, often heartbreaking, and ultimately heroic. I don’t think any writer alive could have told her story more beautifully than John Burnham Schwartz.”—David Benioff, co-creator of HBO’s Game of Thrones and author of City of Thieves “The Red Daughter is an intimate, intricate look at the collision of geopolitics with a private life: surprising and engaging from beginning to end.”—Jennifer Egan

His grandson, Dr. John L. Cashin, Jr., inherited that passion for social justice and formed an independent Democratic party to counter George Wallace's Dixiecrats, electing more blacks to office than in any Southern state. His "uppity" ways attracted many enemies. Twice the private plane Cashin owned and piloted was sabotaged. His dental office and boyhood home were taken by eminent domain. The IRS pursued him, as did the FBI. Ultimately his passions would lead to ruin and leave his daughter, Sheryll, wondering why he would risk so much. In following generations of Cashins through the eras of slavery, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, civil rights, and post-civil rights political struggles, Sheryll Cashin conveys how she came to embrace being an agitator's daughter with humor, honesty, and love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At just ten years old, playing in the lush trees, starting mischief with the boys; Kim loved her family and friends, the sounds of the market, the tastes of the foods, she enjoyed life, and wished it would never change. What she didn’t know yet was all that she loved was about to be torn from her prying fists. "Wake up, wake up…" her sister yelled, shaking her. Looking out the window behind their bed, Vi?t C?ng marched just a hundred meters from her home just outside Saigon. Pop pop pop pop gunshots from the AK-47’s jolted their muscles as a full scale attack on the American Army base began. Their small home caught in the crossfire, they spent the night of T?t, the 1968 New Year, in the safety of a small dark makeshift cellar. The war finally came to an emotionally sad ending, the streets in crisis, people fleeing by the thousands. The North Vietnamese Army declared victory renaming Saigon to Ho Chi Minh City. April 30th, 1975…this was a day that will change Kim’s life forever. Forced into oppressive Communist life was hard and depressing. Kim’s dreams of an education in America were crushed, her husband taken to prison, her brother in law taken to a reeducation camp, their family business ransacked and closed by the police; food became scarce, money even worse. Stories of boat people attempting escape caught her attention. Such sad stories though, a coworker captured by pirates, beaten, and then tossed to the sea to die. A mother losing her children, drowning in the seas. The list goes on but her desire for freedom outweighed the risks. In less than a year she found herself being stuffed into a hidden compartment at the bottom of a small wooden fishing boat with many other desperate souls seeking freedom. The darkness, rancid smells, and thick air choked her lungs. Cramped, her body ached and below her waist was all but numb. Without warning the diesel engine kicked up louder and the boat started moving faster. Pah pah pah pah pah she heard in rapid succession. Bullets pinged off the side of the vessel, splintering the wood through to the cabin. Still, the boat did not slow. Again Pah pah pah pah pah. The sounds of bullets hitting the side of the boat echoed in her ears. Everyone jumped. The engines kicked off and the boat came to a dead stop. Oh my god they already caught us. Falling over into the dirty sea-ridden floor of the boat, fish juice mixed with unthinkable bodily fluids washed back and forth around her face. Reaching her hand to her side, feeling a sharp searing pain. It was wet, blood was everywhere. The shimmering brilliant lights of the spot lights and yelling faded into the background as her head became light, dizzy, as everything went black… Book Review 1: "I knew little about Vietnam other than living through the war myself. I watched the protests here at home and lost friends over there. One of my favorite movies remains “The Killing Fields” about the journalist Sydney Schanberg and his friend Dith Pran. While that movie is primarily about Cambodia, I believe much applies to Vietnam as well. This book opened my eyes to a whole new facet of the Vietnam war; the people; the villagers who had to live through it, not only when the US pulled out, but for years after as well. It is a well written and thoughtful accounting of the day to day life of one young woman. Her terror and hardships were heart wrenching. If you’d like a down to earth account of the war, this is the book for you. No who is right or wrong, just what was the reality for one woman. I would like to read more from Russ Katz. Thank you to Netgalley and Dog Ear Publishing for allowing me the opportunity to read this book." -- Tripower53, NetGalley Book review 2: "This manuscript tells an extraordinary story, a story that deserves to be told to as many people as want to know about it. And there are many facets of the present draft of The Principal’s Daughter that are very, very well done indeed. It is, up to a point, very effectively put together. The material is rich, that characters are vivid, and the narrative itself is riveting and moving. Whatever you do with this, keep Kim’s spirit alive. She is a Personage. You are lucky to know her. I am lucky to know something about her now. That character, that family, that place in the mango trees: magic. You got yourself a million acres of magic here, pal. Don’t screw it up! (You won’t, because you know it’s magic.) I don’t think I’ve ever read a piece of prose that so galvanized my attention--" -- Kevin Anderson & Associates Book Review 3: "This was a fantastic story about an inspirational woman, Kim who lives during the Vietnam war and experiences not only their quest for freedom, but also her own. Kim is a resilient soul whose dreams are destroyed and it is up to her bravery and hope to remake them. This is not a typical story and it is one that will both teach you something about Vietnam and touch your heart. Rich in description and food references, the world comes alive and while we will never be able to know these experiences, we begin to get a glimmer of these moments: both good and bad. Notes: I loved the book! I will be posting a review on my blog, utopia-state-of-mind.com, on December 7th and will update this review when it goes live. Additionally I will be posting my review on Netgalley within the next two days from now." -- Lili Hadsell, NetGalley

Book excerpt: A father’s exhilarating and funny love letter to his daughter with Down syndrome whose vibrant and infectious approach to life has something to teach all of us about how we can better live our own. Jillian Daugherty was born with Down syndrome. The day they brought her home from the hospital, her parents, Paul and Kerry, were flooded with worry and uncertainty, but also overwhelming love, which they channeled to “the job of building the better Jillian.” While their daughter had special needs, they refused to allow her to grow up needy—“Expect, Don’t Accept” became their mantra. Little did they know how ready Jillian was to meet their challenge. Paul tells stories from Jillian’s mischievous childhood and moves to her early adulthood, tracing her journey to find happiness and purpose in her adult life, sharing endearing anecdotes as well as stories about her inspiring triumphs. Having graduated from high school and college, Jillian now works to support herself, and has met the love of her life and her husband-to-be, Ryan. In An Uncomplicated Life, the parent learns as much about life from the child as the child does from the parent. Through her unmitigated love for others, her sparkling charisma, and her boundless capacity for joy, Jillian has inspired those around her to live better and more fully. The day Jillian was born, Paul says, was the last bad day. As he lovingly writes, “Jillian is a soul map of our best intentions”—a model of grace, boundless joy, and love for all of us.
