Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vice-Presidency In the brightness of our prospects we are apt to forget how much of our prosperity as a party has depended upon Senator Tallmadge and, if reminded of it, we thoughtlessly say, We have more than paid him by making him a Senator. 'that obligation he has never ceased to acknowledge, and although he will not say it, yet it is due to truth for us to say, he gave us the power to make him Senator. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The People's Ticket: For President, Andrew Jackson; For Vice President, John C. Calhoun It was not from any peculiar attachment to his person, nor from any interested views to his individual benefit and advantage, that a numerous and respectable portion of the American People have brought forward, as a candidate for the next Presidency, General andrew jackson; but it has been from a full and solemn conviction that his great talents, stern political integrity, unfeigned republicanism, and long and faithful services in both civil and military capacities, pre-eminently qualify him, above all others, for that high and responsible station. Born for his country, and from his infancy devoted to its liberty and inde pendence, he was early distinguished for ardent and unshaken patriotism, for a strong and. Vigorous intellect, and for those powers of mind and active virtues, which have subsequently contributed so essentially, to sustain the honour'and promote the prosperity Ofthe nation. Even in youth, he was not unknown to fame; for he is almost as old in glory as he is in years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Terms of President, Vice President, Senators, and Representatives Should the proposed amendment be adopted, the Members of the House elected in November would have about 60 days in which to receive their certificates of election, to prepare for contests, to arrange their private affairs in contemplation of a protracted absence from home, and to reach the Capital. There would be no holiday adj ourn ments the House would only be about eight days without a Speaker, instead of nine months, as under the present system; the theory of the founders of the Constitution, that the Representatives Should come fresh from the people, would be carried out, and they would be engaged in the settlement of the issues upon which they were chosen within 60 days after their election. English: The Democratic Candidate for Vice President of the United States A ph'ilosophic writer says, As an element of character, and one which all good persons recognize as essential to greatness, no one can be named as well calculated to inspire respect, as a profound veneration for ancestors. A sentiment which is most touchingly illustrated by one of our greater fellow-citizens, at the tomb of Adam, our common ancestor.2 If it indeed were possible to breed men as we do horses, and if there was rather more certainty about their real pedigree, we might very surely illustrate our greatness by these profound venerations but as it is with many great horses, many men have had no ascertainable, or at least very uncertain pedigrees; and as is true of those horses, men, taken out of the cart, so to speak, often exhibit qualities which quite distance those whose feed was gilt oats, or who spent much of their time contemplating the graves of their ancestors. However, William H. English had a father and a mother in the regular domestic way; and they had fathers and mothers who died and were buried. Mr. English erected grave stones over them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of George Mifflin Dallas, Vice President of the United States The exasperation of the monopolist party at this vote was such as to remind one of the days of Jackson's veto of the Bank Charter. Lt showed itself in all these forms of dignified rebuke, which the lords of the yard stick and the Spinning-jenny delight to indulge in. Their hireling news papers compared him to Judas and Arnold the petty orators of the Clay Club grew magnificent as they denounced a patriotism too exalted for their comprehension; and Market Street and Front Street, though not quite yet recovered from the memory of the bets they had lost at the last election, added a per centage to the party funds of W'higgery, to pay the charges of burning him in effigy, and insulting the ladies of his family by placards upon his door. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Public Services of Henry Wilson: Late Vice-President of the United States A Statesman eminent for patriotism and integrity is a national instructor. The record of his life, his services, and his opinions, is, to some extent, an exposition of the spirit and progress of the people whom he represents; and the people have the right to claim it, not only as a memorial of the past, but as an inspiration for the present, and a light for times to come. Pre-eminently may this be asserted in regard to the distinguished man whose biography we now purpose to write. Holding himself steady to his noble purposes, he has been so prominent an actor in the remarkable events of the last twenty years, he has been so identified with the life of the republic, that an account of his official career becomes, in some respects, the key to the history of the country for that period; while in the development of the principles of freedom which he makes, in the consistent life he leads, and in the counsel he imparts, we have our hopes in the permanency of popular government brightened, and our steps directed as we rise to national strength and grandeur. Y., at O'clock on the evening Of October 3oth, 1912. In his death the Nation has lost one Of its most illustrious citizens and one Of its most efficient and faithful servants. Elected at an early age to the mayorship Of his native city, the con tinned confidence Of his community was shown by his election for ten terms as a Representative in the National Congress. As a legis lator he at once took and retained high rank and displayed such attributes Of upright and wise statesmanship as to commend him to the people of the United States for the second highest office within their gift. As presiding officer Of the Senate he won the respect and esteem Of all for his fairness and impartiality. His private life was noble and good. His genial disposition and attractiveness of char acter endeared him to all whose privilege it was to know him. His devotion to the best interests Of his native land will endear his memory to his fellow countrymen. In respect to the memory, and the eminent and various services Of this high Official and patriotic public servant, I direct that on the day Of the funeral the Executive Offices of the United States shall be closed and all posts and stations of the Army and Navy shall display the national flag at half - mast, and that the representatives Of the United States in foreign countries shall pay appropriate tribute to the illustrious dead for a period Of thirty days. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Changing West, and Other Essays I trust that Professor Larson will permit me to add that his friends and associates desired to bring out this book in honor of his election to the vice presidency, and his forth coming elevation to the presidency, of the American His torical Association. When, about a year and a half ago, I ventured to suggest to him the idea of bringing together in book form some of his essays, I was well aware of the fact that his previously published works were mainly in the field of English and early Norse history, but I also knew of his deep interest in the story of the Norwegians in America, and I expressed the hope that he would focus his attention Upon that subject. He took kindly to the suggestion and the result is the present volume. The norwegian-american Historical Association feels honored in being permitted to sponsor the book, and in doing so it offers its congratula tions to Professor Larson not only upon the high distinction that has come to'him at the hands of the national historical organization but also upon the many and important con tributions that he has made to American historiography. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tribute to the Memory of Henry Wilson, Late Vice-President of the United States You will, nevertheless, not expect me to enter into a detail of so important and useful a career - interwoven, as it is, with some of the most thrilling events in the history of our country for more than a quarter of a century. In many aspects Henry Wilson will stand before posterity as one of the most remarkable men of his times. Cradled in obscurity and poverty, and struggling till he reached mature manhood against the most depressing circumstances, he nevertheless advanced by steady steps to positions of exalted trusts, and finally reached the second place in the gift of the American people. It is rare, very rare, that we see a citizen rising so high from a station originally so low, and making so enduring a mark upon the institutions of his country, despite the blighting influence that surrounded his early years. I need not trace even the outlines of his career. The eulogiums from the press, the platform and the pulpit since his death have made them as familiar as household words. Inured to toil from childhood, he was a farm apprentice till he reached his majority, when he learned the trade of a shoemaker, and finally settled in Natick, in the State of Massachusetts, in 1838, at the age of twenty-seven.
