Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mariolatry, and Other Errors of Popery The attack upon me, which led me to present this little book to the public, was made solely because I stand for the defence of the Bible and evangelical truth, and against corrupt traditions, deceitful errors, - and especially idolatry wearing the name of Christianity. I have written, therefore, not in self-defence, but in the name of the Christian religion. I am constitutionally opposed to "theological polemics" but when modern liberalism demands that we make the mantle of a false charity so broad as to cover and endorse the vilest iniquities by a cringing silence, in the name of my Master, I most earnestly protest against such demand. I have made no attempt to write a history; yet the historical references will be found reliable. My aim has been to "lift a warning voice" and awake the spirit of inquiry and investigation. If my efforts, in this direction, prove successful, I shall be satisfied. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popery, the Foe of the Church, and of the Republic Popery's inveterate hostility to civil and religious lib etty. And this, most assuredly, is a subject which though lacking novelty, imperatively demands earnest, serious, thoughtful consideration. In this age of maud lin charity for all systems of faith - instead of genuine charity for all men - the Church greatly needs a fear less reassertion of the principles and doctrines essential to the hope of salvation. Souls struggling with sin need to know that Christ, our elder brother, ever acces sible, is a mighty Saviour, and that all the ransomed are kings and priests unto God. We design to express our opinion of it in full at a future time. We have read within a few days, a pamphlet entitled "Renunciation Of Popery," with no ordinary interest. The author, Rev. Samuel B. Smith, has been for a number of years an officiating Roman Priest, and he seems to be thoroughly acquainted with the whole system of Romanism. He has presented to the public many things in his "Renunciation of Popery" which, unless they can be ably answered, it seems to us must, and ought to ruin their cause. He writes well - expresses himself in a Christian manner, and seems to feel deeply for those of his friends who are left behind, in darkness and in ignorance, in that church. Unless we are greatly deceived, this pamphlet will be read with much interest by the public. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Doctrines of Popery It is generally known that the deadlines excited throughout Roman Catholic Christendom by the Protestant Reformation, concurred with other circumstances, in causing the Court of Rome to yield a reluctant consent to the convocation of a General Council of the whole Roman Church. It met first at Trent, in December, 1545, and after various interruptions and adjournments, completed its labours in December, 1563. The result of those labours was the publication of a body of Canons, known as the Canons of the Council of Trent, whereby a fixed and authoritative form has been given to the teaching of Rome, on the chief doctrines of the Christian faith. The Canons of Trent may, on the whole, be regarded as compromise. The doctrines enunciated, are, both in their matter and in the form of statement, modified so far as it is possible for Rome to modify, in order to meet the circumstances of the time. Yet, even in this attenuated form, the bare recital of the words of the Decrees, will be sufficient to excite the indignation of every one, who knows and values the Scriptures of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popery: Its Character and Its Crimes IN that warfare between Popery and Protestantism, -which is every day becoming more serious, -one of the most usual and successful methods employed by Papists, is that of misrepresenting the true character of Popery, in order to accommodate it to the taste of Protestants. Hence no more important task can possibly be attempted than that which forms the object of the following pages, - to exhibit the real doctrines and practices of Romanism, from its own writers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popery: British and Foreign Somewhat more than a century ago, a dignitary of the Anglican Church published a clever and facetious book, entitled A Tale of a Tub. Outcries were raised' against it as irreverent and profane. Irreverent it certainly was toward the Church of Rome and the Church of Geneva; not profane however. Our gracious queen's ministers, I mean her parliamentary, omitting her ecclesiastical, have profited by the hint of this title, and have lately thrown out a tub to the mighty occupant of the northern and southern seas, which he now is tossing over and over, and certainly Will never swallow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse on the Errors of Popery Few subjects more deeply interest the inquiring mind, than the origin, progress, and decline of the Roman Empire. Progressing from inconsiderable beginnings, it gradually rose to that height of power and greatness, that all the known and civilized earth was subjected to its command. Having for centuries ruled the nations with a rod of iron, it as gradually fell and in the end, stripped of its glo and ravaged by the barbarians, it was blotted from ilielist of nations. The monuments of arms, arts, and sciences, of genius, learning, and taste, which still remain, suficiently de monstrate, how great was ancient Rome. They excite our curiosity concerning the causes of her grandeur and ruin they teach us, that 'it was not so much her for; tune, as her system, which produced her exaltation and in the issue, not physical necessity, but vice and luxury were the causes of her decay. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Papist Misrepresented and Represented: Or a Two Fold Character of Popery The father of lies is the author of mis representation. He first made the experi ment of this black art in Paradise: having no surer way of bringing God's precepts into contempt, and making our parents transgress, than by misrepresenting the command which their Maker had laid upon them. And so unhappily successful Was he in this first attempt, that this has been his chief stratagem ever since, for maintaining himself in his usurpation, and propagating error and vice amongst men, by discrediting virtue and truth; and therefore there has nothing of good yet come into the world, nothing been sent from heaven, but what has met with this opposition, the common enemy having employed all his endeavours to bring it into discredit, and render it infamous by misrepresenting it. Of this there are frequent instances in scripture, and more in church history. The truth of this was experienced on the person of Christ himself, who, though he was the Son of God, the immaculate Lamb, yet was he not out of the reach of calumny, nor ex.
