Book excerpt: She takes my breath away; she is so beautifully damaged. Yes, I had broken her, ravished her life and destroyed her happiness. I brought her to the ultimate despair. I was responsible for all the pain and suffering that now brought her to her knees in front of me. Broken. Hopeless. Reckless in her agony. She is a mirror of my own tortured soul. But what I took away I can give back, in ways she cannot even begin to imagine. She is everything right in all my wrongs. She loves me. She needs me. She has no idea I’m the one who wrecked her life.

Book excerpt: While Gaiseric has not become a household name like other 'barbarian' leaders such as Attila or Genghis Khan, his sack of Rome in AD455 has made his tribe, the Vandals, synonymous with mindless destruction. Gaiseric, however, was no moronic thug, proving himself a highly skilful political and military leader and was one of the dominant forces in Western Mediterranean region for almost half a century. The book starts with a concise history of the Vandals before Gaiseric's reign and analyses the tactics and weaponry with which they carved a path across the Western Roman Empire to Spain. It was in Spain that Gaiseric became their king and he that led the Vandals across the straits of Gibraltar to seize a new home in North Africa, depriving Rome of one of its most important remaining provinces and a key source of grain. Roman attempts at reconquest were defeated and the Balearic Islands, Sicily, Corsica and Sardinia were all added to Gaiseric's kingdom. His son, Huneric, was even betrothed to Eudoxia, daughter of the Emperor Valentinian III and it was her appeal for help after her father's murder that led Gaiseric to invade and sack Rome. He took Eudoxia and the other imperial ladies back to Africa with him, subsequently defeating further attempts by the Eastern Roman Empire to recapture the vital North African territory. Ian Hughes' analysis of the Gaiseric as king and general reveals him as the barbarian who did more than anyone else to bring down the Western Roman Empire, but also as a great leader in his own right and one of the most significant men of his age.

Book excerpt: Researching family history could be just a collection of dry dates but if these dates can be tied in, even tenuously, with historical and social changes then family history becomes much more interesting and allows us a chance to see just how much our ancestors have influenced who we are today. The present Vandal family dates from the marriage, in 1893, of Isabella Jemmott to George Larsen Vandal. There is some mystery concerning the history of our family before that date. Less reputable family members, occasions or incidents were not spoken about in front of the children. Several unusual family stories have been circulated but since the older members of the family have now passed away there is no longer a chance of substantiating these stories. Therefore, to complete the Vandal family picture we have to start from a known fact or date and dig through the sparse, existing parish records and the more comprehensive Statutory Records of Births, Marriages and Deaths to make our family tree and our family history as accurate as possible.

Book excerpt: A military history of the campaigns of Stilicho, the army general who became one of the most powerful men in the Western Roman Empire. Flavius Stilicho lived in one of the most turbulent periods in European history. The Western Empire was finally giving way under pressure from external threats, especially from Germanic tribes crossing the Rhine and Danube, as well as from seemingly ever-present internal revolts and rebellions. Ian Hughes explains how a Vandal (actually, Stilicho had a Vandal father and Roman mother) came to be given almost total control of the Western Empire and describes his attempts to save both the Western Empire and Rome itself from the attacks of Alaric the Goth and other barbarian invaders. Stilicho is one of the major figures in the history of the Late Roman Empire, and his actions following the death of the emperor Theodosius the Great in 395 may have helped to divide the Western and Eastern halves of the Roman Empire on a permanent basis. Yet he is also the individual who helped maintain the integrity of the West before the rebellion of Constantine III in Britain, and the crossing of the Rhine by a major force of Vandals, Sueves, and Alans—both in A.D. 406—set the scene for both his downfall and execution in 408, and the later disintegration of the West. Despite his role in this fascinating and crucial period of history, there is no other full-length biography of him in print.

Book excerpt: In The Vandals' Crown, Gregory Millman paints a vivid picture of the new revolutionaries, both the famous and the little known, and he reveals the inside story of the revolution that has stripped governments of their power to control money. Today, traders have taken the law into their own hands. Like vigilantes, they enforce fundamental economic laws not for love of law but for profit, regardless of what regulators or central bankers may think. They are the reason why the Japanese government was powerless to stop the collapse of the Tokyo stock market in 1990; why the concerted actions of all the Western European countries were unable to roll back a speculative attack on the European Monetary System in 1992; why the U.S. government was unable to stop the slide of the dollar in 1994; why Mexico, Orange County, and numerous corporate losses made dire headlines in 1994 and 1995. The new financial vigilantes move more than $1 trillion every day in currency alone - more than all the cars, wheat, oil, and other products traded in the so-called "real" economy. The Vandals' Crown may be the most important story in modern financial history.

Book excerpt: An up-close look at the Germanic people who sacked Rome in the fifth century AD. On 31 December AD 406, a group of German tribes crossed the Rhine, pierced the Roman defensive lines, and began a rampage across Roman Gaul, sacking cities such as Metz, Arras, and Strasbourg. Foremost amongst them were the Vandals, and their search for a new homeland took them on the most remarkable odyssey. The Romans were unable to stop them and their closest allies, the Alans, marching the breadth of Gaul, crossing the Pyrenees, and making themselves masters of Spain. However, this kingdom of the Vandals and Alans soon came under intense pressure from Rome’s Visigothic allies. In 429, under their new king, Gaiseric, they crossed the straits of Gibraltar to North Africa. They quickly overran this rich Roman province and established a stable kingdom. Taking to the seas, they soon dominated the Western Mediterranean and raided Italy, famously sacking Rome itself in 455. Eventually, however, they were utterly conquered by Belisarius in 533 and vanished from history. Simon MacDowall narrates and analyzes these events, with particular focus on the evolution of Vandal armies and warfare.
