Download or read book Culture and Family written by Wen-Shing Tseng and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1991, this landmark guide gave brilliant insights on dealing with the cultural aspects of family mental health. It systematically reviews various dimensions of the family from a cross-cultural perspective, including system, development, behaviour, and functioning. It then thoroughly examines the problems and dysfunctions that can occur in families of different cultural backgrounds, and finally proposes culturally appropriate assessments and treatments for resolving these family problems. Family counsellors, therapists, and researchers who study the family will find practical suggestions on how to assess and evaluate the family with cultural considerations; clinical suggestions on providing culturally relevant, effective care of the family; and theoretical elaboration on the cultural implications of family therapy. Instead of focusing on families of a particular ethnic or cultural background, the book gives comprehensive coverage to subjects that related to cultural aspects of the family function, problems, and therapy. The authors’ unique backgrounds, which include analysis of the cross-cultural aspects of human behaviour, knowledge in family research, and clinical experience in family therapy, add immeasurably to this book's important contribution.
Book Synopsis Pursuit of Meaning by : Jürgen Straub

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fields of cross-cultural and cultural psychology both acknowledge the role of `culture' for the constitution of a meaningful practice. There are notable differences as well as remarkable commonalities between nomologically oriented cross-cultural psychology on the one hand and interpretive cultural psychology on the other. Contributions to this book discuss recent theoretical and methodological approaches from both fields in order to explore their joint potential for an advancement of the concept of culture, for the theoretical conceptualization and methodical completion of comparative cultural studies and the scientific understanding of cultural difference. This volume includes contributions by Ernest E. Boesch, Kenneth J. Gergen, Rom Harré, Gustav Jahoda and Jaan Valsiner.
Book Synopsis Dynamics of Values in Fertility Change by : Richard Leete
Download or read book Dynamics of Values in Fertility Change written by Richard Leete and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1999-04-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global transformation in the number of children women bear has been one of the most remarkable changes in social behaviour in the twentieth century. The search for explanations of the causes in childbearing behaviour, and particularly in the values attached to children, remains a central research preoccupation of population scientists. This book explores the dimensions of values identified as significant in their impact on fertility decisions. It offers a range of perspectives on a mosaic of values perceived to be of importance in influencing the bearing and caring of children. The book examines the macro and micro theories of the value of children, and considers the multi-dimensional nature of value change. The chapters explore the nature of the mechanisms by which value change may serve to reinforce or promote the ideational essence of change and the impact of pressures for change. It is observed that gender, religion, and culture, all function as complementary lenses through which the necessity of value maintenance or modification is viewed. The book concludes that fertility behaviour is value-driven, but that fertility change is not necessarily driven by value change. The values of most significance to fertility are more fundamental and general values, rather than explicit 'fertility values'.

Book Synopsis Human Assessment and Cultural Factors by : John W. Berry

This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the background of NATO's Istanbul conference of 1971 (Cronbach and Drenth, 1972), the Kingston conference shows that great progress has been made by the community of cross-cultural psychologists. The progress is as much in the psychology of the investigators as in the investigations being reported. In 1971 the investigators were mostly strangers to each other. Behind their reports lay radically different field experiences, disparate research traditions, and mutually contradictory social ideals. Istanbul was not a Tower of Babel, but participants did speak past each other. Now a community exists, thanks to the meetings of NATO and the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology, to flourishing journals, and the Triandis et a1. (1980) Handbook. The members tend to know each other, can anticipate how their formu lations will fallon the ears of others, and accept superficially divergent approaches as making up a collective enterprise. Ten years ago there was open conflict between those who con fronted exotic peoples with traditional tests and applied tradi tional interpretations to the responses, and the relativists who insisted that tasks, test taking, and interpretation cannot be "standardized" in the ways that matter. Today's investigators are conscious of the need to revalidate tasks carried into alien settings; they often prefer to redesign the mode of presentation and to attune the subject to test taking. They face the diffi culties squarely and recognize that even the best means of coping are only partially successful.

Book Synopsis Parenting Beliefs, Behaviors, and Parent-Child Relations by : Kenneth H. Rubin
Download or read book Parenting Beliefs, Behaviors, and Parent-Child Relations written by Kenneth H. Rubin and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book, is to present a rather simple argument. Parents' thoughts about childrearing and the ways in which they interact with children to achieve particular parenting or developmental goals, are culturally determined. Within any culture, children are shaped by the physical and social settings within which they live, culturally regulated customs and childrearing practices, and culturally based belief systems. The psychological "meaning" attributed to any given social behavior is, in large part, a function of the ecological niche within which it is produced. Clearly, it is the case that there are some cultural universals. All parents want their children to be healthy and to feel secure. However, "healthy" and "unhealthy," at least in the psychological sense of the term, can have different meanings from culture to culture.
