Book excerpt: Three times an Ashes winner, Trevor Bailey is regarded next to Ian Botham as England's premier all-rounder since the Second World War. He was a schoolboy prodigy at Dulwich College, won cricket and soccer blues at Cambridge University and an FA Amateur Cup winners' medal with Walthamstow in 1951-52. At the heart of the story is the fighting spirit of a loyalist who served England - and his home county, Essex - so well in a crisis. This book profiles one of the most iconic cricketers of his generation.

Book excerpt: Frank Mitchell (1872-1935) in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras was a shining sporting star who dazzled all too briefly. Whilst showing great potential at cricket as a mature undergraduate, he reached the ultimate position in rugby when still at Cambridge in becoming captain of the England XV. Cricket, though, was a more lasting interest. Mitchell achieved some notoriety through his actions as captain of Cambridge in the Varsity match of 1896, when he sought to avoid the Oxford XI having to follow-on by instructing his bowler to bowl no balls and wides. His earlier attacking style had already brought him, as a Yorkshireman, to the attention of Lord Hawke, with much of his limited first-class cricket then being played for Yorkshire. Hawke gave him a place on his tour to South Africa in 1898/99, which made Mitchell, retrospectively, an English Test cricketer. He served with the army during part of the Boer War and, after a wonderful season back with Yorkshire in 1901, he emigrated to South Africa. Working for Abe Bailey, the South African entrepreneur, led Mitchell to captain the South African team to England in 1904 which, though playing no official tests, had a successful tour. Thereafter he worked as a stockbroker, but a surprise recall as captain of the South African team for the triangular tour of 1912 caused more controversy. Without much personal income, Mitchell struggled with the requirements of amateurism, but he again joined the army in 1914, rising to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. Later he made a living from the precarious tin industry in Nigeria and from writing frequent columns for the cricketer. Some of the aspirations expressed in his articles would remain welcome today. Frank Mitchell was a man of many parts, whose contributions to English and South African sport made him for short periods a notable hero.

Book excerpt: Award-winning cricket writer Mark Peel charts the development of the England captaincy from 1945 to the present, with portraits of England's 43 captains. Is England's failure to produce sufficient leaders of stature - especially in comparison with Australia - down to individual deficiencies or the exacting nature of the job?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With 50 years of passionate involvement in cricket; extensive effort to constantly understand and improve what I do; insightful exploration of such things as ancient Chinese and Japanese texts as well as modern psychology concepts, I have developed my own philosophies and ways of doing things in cricket. Many of these ways are unique to me and opposite to conventional instruction. Whilst my hearing, memory and physical condition are all in decline, the satisfaction gained from understanding what motivates and can improve an individual remains a major source of inspiration. Often I have observed people with extraordinary talent give up just short of what they could achieve, yet others with less talent, but with an indomitable spirit continue on and reap the rewards of success. Why does this happen? We simply have not been educated in how to harness and use our thinking minds wisely. The result is that our efforts in life are often hit or miss. Importantly the WISDOM contained in my book, can help my readers better identify, connect with and meet the challenges that their involvement in cricket will bring.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A definitive tome, essential to all cricket book collectors and Wisden readers. In the early 1980s Wisden published four anthologies that celebrated the best of Wisden Cricketers' Almanack stretching back to its first edition in 1864. Edited by the respected jazz musician, raconteur and cricket-lover, Benny Green, these volumes proved very popular. Wisden readers have long awaited a fifth, updated volume to cover the intervening period, marked by all-time greats like Viv Richards, Ian Botham, Richard Hadlee, Imran Khan, Sachin Tendulkar, Steve Waugh, Brian Lara and Shane Warne. The Wisden Anthology 1978-2006 meets this demand, though it does not follow the style of the Benny Green volumes. Rather than selecting random highlights, Stephen Moss has edited this anthology with the aim of painting a coherent picture of cricket's evolution over the past 30 years. Quite simply it is a story of revolution, beginning in Test cricket's centenary year when England regained the Ashes, Geoffrey Boycott scored his hundredth hundred, Ian Botham took five for 74 on debut, and Kerry Packer's millions ensured the era of deferential players earning a pittance was over for good. Thirty years on, for better or worse, cricket has changed radically. The top players form a highly paid elite who rarely venture beyond the international arena; television calls the tune; the political balance of power has shifted towards Asia; one-day cricket in coloured clothing is ubiquitous; and run-rates rise inexorably while batsmen tear bowlers to pieces as never before. To the gnarled old pros of the 1950s the game must be unrecognisable. A genuine revolution, charted in 40,000 Wisden pages over the past 30 years, is now distilled into a 1,280-page anthology that selects the matches, players, events and controversies which ushered the game into a brave new century.
