Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mud Laden Fluids and Tables on Specific Gravities and Collapsing Pressures The use of mud laden fluid has long been recognized as being a very necessary adjunct in rotary drilling, both for muddling operations and in holding down heavy pressures not controllable with clear water. We find, however, that drillers are given to overestimating the weights of muds used. They go by the consistency of the mud fluid rather than by its actual weight. A mud is considered by them to be heavy when it is so thick that the pumps handle it with difficulty, regardless of what its actual weight in pounds per gallon may be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mud-Laden Fluid Applied to Well Drilling One of the greatest wastes of natural gas is that which often takes place in drilling oil wells. If a well is being drilled by one of the usual methods, the gas becomes a hindrance to drilling, and the driller regards it as a nuisance; or the gas may be found in a field where it has little or no immediate commercial value, and hence is allowed to escape into the air without restraint. For preventing this waste the usual dry-hole methods of drilling are unsuitable, and it is the purpose of this paper to outline a method whereby wells may be drilled and the oil recovered without waste of gas. When an open hole is bored into a bed containing gas under pres sure, the gas flows toward the hole because of the reduction of pres sure at the hole. The movement of gas is therefore always from a greater to a lesser pressure. If some means be provided for keeping the pressure within the well greater than the pressure in the gas sand there will be no flow of gas into the well. The requisite pres sure may be obtained by a column of water in the well, provided the gas pressure be not greater than that of the water when the well is full. However, the use of clear water is sometimes impracticable and is always undesirable. The action of clear water on the walls of the well causes caving, and an attempt to use clear water in drilling the well invites trouble and may injure the producing sands. By mixing clay with the water the results obtained are entirely different, and this paper deals with the use of a mud-laden fluid as applied to the dry-hole method of drilling with a cable rig, one type of which is shown in figure 1. Book excerpt: The petroleum industry in general has been dominated by engineers and production specialists. The upstream segment of the industry is dominated by drilling/completion engineers. Usually, neither of those disciplines have a great deal of training in the chemistry aspects of drilling and completing a well prior to its going on production. The chemistry of drilling fluids and completion fluids have a profound effect on the success of a well. For example, historically the drilling fluid costs to drill a well have averaged around 7% of the overall cost of the well, before completion. The successful delivery of up to 100% of that wellbore, in many cases may be attributable to the fluid used. Considered the "bible" of the industry, Composition and Properties of Drilling and Completion Fluids, first written by Walter Rogers in 1948, and updated on a regular basis thereafter, is a key tool to achieving successful delivery of the wellbore. In its Sixth Edition, Composition and Properties of Drilling and Completion Fluids has been updated and revised to incorporate new information on technology, economic, and political issues that have impacted the use of fluids to drill and complete oil and gas wells. With updated content on Completion Fluids and Reservoir Drilling Fluids, Health, Safety & Environment, Drilling Fluid Systems and Products, new fluid systems and additives from both chemical and engineering perspectives, Wellbore Stability, adding the new R&D on water-based muds, and with increased content on Equipment and Procedures for Evaluating Drilling Fluid Performance in light of the advent of digital technology and better manufacturing techniques, Composition and Properties of Drilling and Completion Fluids has been thoroughly updated to meet the drilling and completion engineer's needs. Explains a myriad of new products and fluid systems Cover the newest API/SI standards New R&D on water-based muds New emphases on Health, Safety & Environment New Chapter on waste management and disposal

Book excerpt: Composition and Properties of Drilling and Completion Fluids, Fifth Edition, covers the fundamental principles of geology, chemistry, and physics that provide the scientific basis for drilling fluids technology. New material for drilling, logging, and production supervisors and engineers exlains how the choice of a drilling fluid and proper maintenance can profoundly reduce total well costs. It also defines technical terms necessary to the understanding of instructions and information provided by the mud engineer. Updated chapters discuss evaluation of drilling fluid performance, clay mineralogy and colloid chemistry, rheology, filtration properties, hole stability, drilling problems, and completion fluids.

These units are published in cooperation with the International Association of Drilling Contractors. In some cases, previous editions are available in Spanish, while supplies last, for $14. Open-book comprehensive tests covering Units I, II, III, and V of the Rotary Drilling Series are available. This totally new lesson combines Mud Pumps and Conditioning Equipment and Circulating Systems. It offers a better understanding of the operation, care, and maintenance of mud pumps and mud conditioning equipment. Discusses the composition, testing, and treatment of drilling fluids and the route of circulation. All measurements are given in both U.S. and SI units. Many illustrations, a complete glossary, and review questions and answers are also provided.

Book excerpt: Written by the Shale Shaker Committee of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, originally of the American Association of Drilling Engineers, the authors of this book are some of the most well-respected names in the world for drilling. The first edition, Shale Shakers and Drilling Fluid Systems, was only on shale shakers, a very important piece of machinery on a drilling rig that removes drill cuttings. The original book has been much expanded to include many other aspects of drilling solids control, including chapters on drilling fluids, cut-point curves, mud cleaners, and many other pieces of equipment that were not covered in the original book. Written by a team of more than 20 of the world's foremost drilling experts, from such companies as Shell, Conoco, Amoco, and BP There has never been a book that pulls together such a vast array of materials and depth of topic coverage in the area of drilling fluids Covers quickly changing technology that updates the drilling engineer on all of the latest equipment, fluids, and techniques
