Book excerpt: This report is the third in a series that documents the progression of a research effort aimed at developing stochastic vehicle mobility forecasting capabilities using the NATO Reference Mobility Model, edition II (NRMM II). The first report introduced the basic concepts and procedures. The second report described extensions of the procedures and demonstrated the application of these procedures to two historical mobility assessments that were influential in the procurement of some current U.S. Arm vehicles. The procedures described in these first two reports characterized the variability of the NRMM II empirical relationships using small-scale data sets and/or judgment. The intent was only to demonstrate the viability of the stochastic forecasting concepts. The effort reported in this third report was conducted to facilitate a more accurate characterization of the variability in the cross-country traction empirical relationships. The approach was to: (1) thoroughly examine the empirical relationships in terms of fundamental origins and implemented use, and (2) economically develop a database that will accurately characterize the variability of each relationship. As a result, databases were developed for 65 of the 70 NRMM II empirical relationships for vehicle traction on soil covered terrain, and these databases will facilitate at least a conjectural evaluation of the variability in all 70. When variability characterizations based on these new databases are implemented into the stochastic forecasting procedures, more accurate risk assessments will result. Another result of this research was the observation that some of the NRMM II traction relationships are in need of attention for model improvements. (KAR) P. 217-218.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobility modeling is a critical step in the ground vehicle acquisition process for military vehicles. Mobility modeling tools, and in particular the NATO Reference Mobility Model (NRMM), have played a critical role in understanding the mission-level capabilities of ground vehicles. This understanding via modeling supports not only developers during early vehicle design but also decision makers in the field previewing the capabilities of ground vehicles in real-world deployments. Due to decades of field testing and operations, mobility modeling for traditional ground vehicles is well-understood; however, mobility modeling tools for evaluating autonomous mobility are sparse. Therefore, this dissertation proposes and derives a Reference Autonomous Mobility Model (RAMM). The RAMM leverages cutting-edge modeling and simulation tools to build a mobility model that serves as the mission-level mobility modeling tool currently lacking in the unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) community, thereby filling the current analysis gap in the autonomous vehicle acquisition cycle. The RAMM is built on (1) a thorough review of theories of verification and validation of simulations, (2) a novel framework for validating simulations of autonomous systems and (3) the mobility modeling framework already established by the NRMM. These building blocks brought to light the need for new, validated modeling and simulation (M&S) tools capable of simulating, at a high-fidelity, autonomous unmanned ground vehicle operations. This dissertation maps the derivation of the RAMM, starting with a history of verification of simulation models and a literature review of current autonomous mobility modeling methods. In light of these literature reviews, a new framework for V&V of simulations of autonomous systems is proposed, and the requirements for and derivation of the RAMM is presented. This dissertation concludes with an example application of the RAMM for route planning for autonomous UGVs. Once fully developed, the RAMM will serve as an integral part in the design, development, testing and evaluation, and ultimate fielding of autonomous UGVs for military applications.

Book excerpt: The Advanced Weapons Concepts Branch, Army Research Laboratory (ARL), was asked to assess and evaluate the predicted cross-country performance of the current DEMO III Experimental Unmanned Ground Vehicle (XUV) chassis design using the NATO Reference Mobility Model (NRMM) by the Program Manager of the Department of Defense sponsored DEMO III XUV Program. The XUV modeled approximately 2,500 lb that will be able to traverse cross-country terrain at 20 mph. The XUV is designed to be driven by an autonomous mobility package, but the NRMM does not support autonomous mobility; so, for the purposes of this study, the chassis was modeled as a manned vehicle. Currently, the XUV is in the final chassis and suspension development phase by the systems integrator, Robotic Systems Technology, Inc. The NRMM is a computer-based simulation tool that can predict a vehicle's steady-state operating capability (effective maximum speed) over specified terrain. The NRMM can perform on-road and cross-country prediction of a vehicle's effective maximum speed. The NRMM is a matured technology that was developed and proven by the Waterways Experiment Station (WES) and the Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) over several decades. The NRMM has been revised and updated throughout the years; the current version used to perform this analysis is version 2, also known as NRMM II. ARL was also asked to compare the predicted performance of the XUV chassis against the high-mobility, multipurpose, wheeled vehicle (HMMWV) using NRMM II. This report details the NRMM II analysis and assessment of the DEMO III XUV and WES HMMWV.

Book excerpt: Mobility implementation in military models and simulations (M & S) currently is tailored primarily for specific models, leading to inconsistency between models. To assist decision-makers in analysis, acquisition, and training activities, it is necessary to provide and promote consistency among the models. The NATO Reference Mobility Model (NRMM), Version II, is the Army Battle Command, Simulation and Experimentation Directorate, standard for single vehicle ground movement representation. This report describes the development of an NRMM-based Standard Mobility (STNDMob) Application Programming Interface (API) as a means of readily achieving higher fidelity movement representation by incorporating terrain-limited speeds into M & S. As described in the report, the STNDMob API, Version 3, includes descriptions of two derivative models: the low-resolution (Level 1) and the medium-resolution (Level 2) capabilities of STNDMob within the tactical/entity fidelity. Each level of resolution has two degrees of fidelity. These levels of resolution are an implementation of the physical models for steady-state speed conditions. As a whole, STNDMob can be classified as a service module that provides vehicle speeds to a vehicle routing service/planner.

The program described here uses selected values calculated in the NRMM to determine the factor which is the limiter for a vehicle and terrain unit. In the case of a NO-GO prediction, the reason for the NO-GO is deduced. Detailed and summary diagnostic tables are produced together with a graphical presentation of the diagnostics. (Author).

Book excerpt: Full of illustrations and photographs, this publication is a comprehensive history of the many innovations in tanks and other military ground vehicles and equipment developed by the engineers at TARDEC, the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center. TARDEC was formed in 1946 as an outgrowth of the Detroit Arsenal Tank Plant built during World War II. During the early years, emphasis was placed on evolving new technologies to improve military ground vehicles, culminating in the development of the M1 Abrams tank. Since then, TARDEC has grown to be a key center for advanced technologies for military ground vehicles and equipment. Recent years have brought an explosion of technology development and integration, from hybrid engines to fuel cells, from analytical simulation to enormous physical simulators, and from small robots to entire unmanned vehicles.
