Book Synopsis Modality and the Biblical Hebrew Infinitive Absolute by : Scott N. Callaham
Download or read book Modality and the Biblical Hebrew Infinitive Absolute written by Scott N. Callaham and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2010 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alongside several related ancient languages, Biblical Hebrew possesses two infinitive forms. The rarer of the two is the infinitive absolute, for which no analogous structure exists in modern translation receptor languages such as English. In studying its use, Hebrew grammarians have long noted that the infinitive absolute often appears in modal contexts. However, until the present study this phenomenon has not received further scholarly attention. Employing contemporary cross-linguistic research on modality, Callaham's study presents a new and comprehensive analysis of the function of the infi nitive absolute in Biblical Hebrew. Collected data strongly imply that the combination of an infinitive absolute and a cognate verb is a construction expressing verb focus, which includes focus on any modality present in the cognate verb. Infinitives absolute can also function as full substitutes for finite verbs. Accordingly, these independent uses are also highly modal. Through wide-ranging interaction with previous research and exhaustive examination of textual data, this study advances new findings on the interplay of modality and infinitive absolute employment in the Hebrew Bible.

Book Synopsis The Imperative Function of the Infinitive Absolute by : Angela B. Wagner
Download or read book The Imperative Function of the Infinitive Absolute written by Angela B. Wagner and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a comprehensive list of the infinitive absolutes in the Hebrew Bible that function as imperatives. It presents the number of, the Binyanim of, and a list with commentary on these infinitives. All things considered, context seems to be the most significant aspect of the infinitive absolute imperative in every case of its occurrence. It does not seem that there are any indicators within the verbal forms themselves to argue for imperativeness. The imperativeness of the infinitive absolute is possibly equivalent to the imperativeness of the regular imperative.

Book Synopsis A Guide to Biblical Hebrew Syntax by : Bill T. Arnold
Download or read book A Guide to Biblical Hebrew Syntax written by Bill T. Arnold and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-11-24 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introduces and abridges the syntactical features of the original language of the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament. Scholars have made significant progress in recent decades in understanding Biblical Hebrew syntax. Yet intermediate readers seldom have access to this progress due to the technical jargon and sometimes-obscure locations of the scholarly publications. This Guide is an intermediate-level reference grammar for Biblical Hebrew. As such, it assumes an understanding of elementary phonology and morphology, and defines and illustrates the fundamental syntactical features of Biblical Hebrew that most intermediate-level readers struggle to master. The volume divides Biblical Hebrew syntax, and to a lesser extent morphology, into four parts. The first three cover the individual words (nouns, verbs, and particles) with the goal of helping the reader move from morphological and syntactical observations to meaning and significance. The fourth section moves beyond phase-level phenomena and considers the larger relationships of clauses and sentences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meeting the need for a textbook for classroom use after first year Hebrew grammar, Waltke and O'Connor integrate the results of modern linguistic study of Hebrew and years of experience teaching the subject in this book. In addition to functioning as a teaching grammar, this work will also be widely used for reference and self-guided instruction in Hebrew beyond the first formal year. Extensive discussion and explanation of grammatical points help to sort out points blurred in introductory books. More than 3,500 Biblical Hebrew examples illustrate the points of grammar under discussion. Four indexes (Scripture, Authorities cited, Hebrew words, and Topics) provide ready access to the vast array of information found in the 40 chapters. Destined to become a classic work, this long-awaited book fills a major gap among modern publications on Biblical Hebrew.

Since publication of the first edition, research on Biblical Hebrew syntax has substantially evolved. This new edition incorporates these developments through detailed descriptions of grammatical phenomena from a linguistics approach. It retains the labels and terminology used in the first edition to maintain continuity with the majority of entry-level and more advanced grammars.
