Book excerpt: The inclusion of interactive television (iTV) programs for learning is an emerging genre in education. Literature has concluded that any aspect of learning requires some form of interaction or feedback to be most effective. As television (TV) evolves from being a passive to an active medium, it has the potential to engage learners and reach a mass audience on a scale much larger than traditional education and training. The purpose of this paper is twofold: to identify why iTV is an effective instructional mode for adult learners and to promote the integration of iTV instruction into lifelong learning and adult education. The popularity of iTV in Europe and the potential of iTV in the United States is introduced first. The theoretical framework that supports the effects of iTV for learning is discussed. Identified later are the reasons why adults want to learn and the forces that influence adults to learn. The potential and benefits of iTV instruction for adult learners will also be addressed. The challenges of such instruction are identified. Finally, conclusions on the importance and potential of iTV instruction for future adult education are presented.

Book Synopsis Popular Culture as Pedagogy by : Kaela Jubas
Download or read book Popular Culture as Pedagogy written by Kaela Jubas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Grounded in the field of adult education, this international compilation offers a range of critical perspectives on popular culture as a form of pedagogy. Its fundamental premise is that adults learn in multiple ways, including through their consumption of fiction. As scholars have asserted for decades, people are not passive consumers of media; rather, we (re)make our own meanings as we accept, resist, and challenge cultural representations. At a time when attention often turns to new media, the contributors to this collection continue to find “old” forms of popular culture important and worthy of study. Television and movies – the emphases in this book – reflect aspects of consumers’ lives, and can be powerful vehicles for helping adults see, experience, and inhabit the world in new and different ways. This volume moves beyond conceptually oriented scholarship, taking a decidedly research-oriented focus. It offers examples of textual and discursive analyses of television shows and films that portray varied contexts of adult learning, and suggests how participants can be brought into adult education research in this area. In so doing, it provides compelling evidence about the complexity, politics, and multidimensionality of adult teaching and learning. Using a range of television shows and movies as exemplars, chapters relate popular culture to globalization, identity, health and health care, and education. The book will be of great use to instructors, students, and researchers located in adult education, cultural studies, women’s and gender studies, cultural sociology, and other fields who are looking for innovative ways to explore social life as experienced and imagined."
Book Synopsis Redefining the Discipline of Adult Education by : Robert Dean Boyd
Download or read book Redefining the Discipline of Adult Education written by Robert Dean Boyd and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Issued by the Adult Education Association of the USA, "Redefining the Discipline of Adult Education" presents a model that unites curriculum and instruction while forcing adult educators to examine the social and cultural systems in which they operate. Editors Apps and Boyd state that they have two objectives in redefining the field of adult education: (1) to construct a conceptual framework to demarcate the practice and study of adult education and (2) to structure the content to present an integrated inquiry that focuses on foundational issues. The field of adult education is experiencing high growth, and neophytes seeking an understanding of its parameters may find the discussion of the conceptual model presented a bit confusing. The book will be most useful as a text for graduate study and as a forum for further exploration of a conceptual basis for defining the field of adult education from within.

Download or read book Adult Education written by Jerold W. Apps and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The adults who participate in classes, workshops, and other learning opportunities are as diverse as the kinds of programs in which they enroll and the reasons for which they enroll. Adult learners are multifaceted, appreciate flexibility in teaching strategies, and want a say in what they will learn. These purposes for adult education are evident: (1) to help people acquire tools for physical, psychological, and social survival; (2) to help people discover a sense of meaning in their lives; (3) to help people learn how to learn; and (4) to help communities provide a more humane social, psychological, and physical environment for their members. Providers of adult education can be divided into four categories: tax-supported agencies and institutions; nonprofit, self-supporting agencies and institutions; for-profit providers; and nonformal learning opportunities. Some trends and issues that the field of adult education faces in the years ahead include the emerging learning society, quality concerns, adult illiteracy, and influence of information technology.
