Book excerpt: This book represents a major contribution to ongoing studies on the Acts of the Apostles, particularly on the manner in which the New Testament writer quotes and interprets the Old Testament. The discussion confines itself to an examination of the nine explicit quotations in Stephen’s speech of Acts 7, which are identified with introductory formulae. Adopting text-historical, methodological, and hermeneutical approaches, this study brings the reader up-to-date in this ever-growing and important field in New Testament studies, and provides the harvest of decades of research into the relationship between the Old and New Testaments. It will be of interest to all students, ministers, and scholars alike, and to anyone wanting to go deeper into the heart of the Bible.

The task of this book is to discern what the tabernacle, rather than the temple, meant to early Christians, and why they used tabernacle imagery as they did. The results of this study are intended to contribute to a clearer understanding of a number of important NT texts and to a broader discussion of early Christian attitudes towards Israel's cult and the use of cultic language in Christian theology.

Book excerpt: Uncovering ancient texts and rethinking early Christian identity with the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles Shaping the Past to Define the Present comprises both new and revised essays by esteemed New Testament scholar Gregory E. Sterling on Jewish and early Christian historiography. A sequel to his seminal work, Historiography and Self-Definition, this volume expands on Sterling’s reading of Luke-Acts in the context of contemporary Jewish and Greek historiography. These systematically arranged essays comprise his new and revised contributions to the field of biblical studies, exploring: the genre of apologetic historiography exemplified by Josephus and Eusebius the context of Josephus’s work within a larger tradition of Eastern historiography the initial composition and circulation of Luke and Acts the relationship of Luke-Acts to the Septuagint the interpretation of the Diaspora in Luke-Acts the structure of salvation history as it is manifested in Luke-Acts Socratic influences on Luke’s portrayal of Jesus’s death the early Jerusalem Christian community as depicted in Acts compared with other Hellenized Eastern traditions such as Egyptian priests and Indian sages the establishment of Christianity’s “socially respectability” as a guiding purpose in Luke-Acts Engaging with current critical frameworks, Sterling offers readers a comprehensive analysis of early Christian self-definition through Judeo-Christian historiography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a comprehensive treatment of one of the most intriguing questions of modern New Testament study: what kind of person could have produced the mysterious document known today as the Epistle to the Hebrews? While other studies of Hebrews have tended to focus either on the question of the identity of the writer and of the letter's recipients, or on individual issues such as the writer's view of priesthood, religious pilgrimage or christology, Dr Hurst provides the first work to explore in a comprehensive way the important question of what specifically identifiable milieus might have produced a document which for many people seems something of an alien presence within the New Testament. The book is organised around the widely differing backgrounds of thought which have to be considered - such as Platonism, the beliefs of the Dead Sea Sect and of the early gnostics (as well as those of St Stephen and St Paul) - and it explores in depth the major theological and philosophical problems faced by first-century Christians.

Book excerpt: 'Origin Myths and Holy Places in the Old Testament' examines the biblical narratives which describe the origins of holy places. It argues for the Hellenistic origin or redaction of most of these narratives. Three central questions are addressed: are there common features in biblical accounts about the foundation of places of worship; are there elements in the aetiological stories that reveal the 'real' mythology/rituals of the sanctuary; what were the circumstances of the creation of such narratives?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies kingship with reference to the Johannine Jesus. Postcolonialism leads us to an avenue from which to read this Gospel in the more complex and wider context of the hybridized Jewish and Greco-Roman worlds of the Roman Empire in the first century CE. This provides a new perspective on the kingship of the Johannine Jesus, whose kingly identity is characterized by hybridized christological titles. For the Johannine readers in the first century, who were exploited, oppressed, yet at odds with both the colonizer and the colonized in the Roman Empire, this Gospel was deemed to reveal his identity. Using many christological titles, it presented Jesus as the universal king going beyond the Jewish Messiah(s) and the Roman emperors and also as the decolonizer who came to “his own” world to liberate his people from the darkness. In this respect, the ideology of the Johannine emphasizes that love, peace, freedom, service of the center for the margins, and forgiveness are the ruling forces in the new world where Jesus reigns as king. Raising an awareness of these ideologies, John’s gospel asks readers to overcome the conflicting world shrouded in darkness, thenceforth entering the new Johannine world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Samaritan Pentateuch (SP) is the sacred scripture of the Samaritans, a tenacious religious community made famous by Jesus’ Good Samaritan story that persists to this day. Not so widely known is the impact of the SP outside the Samaritan community. Recently there has been a resurgence of interest in this scripture, as evidenced by several translations of the SP as well as reference in Qumran scroll studies to the SP or an SP-like tradition in an effort to describe some of the textual evidence present in the scrolls. This volume presents a general introduction to and overview of the SP, suitable for a course text and as a reference tool for the professional scholar.
