Book excerpt: This synthesis on the use of recycled rubber tires in highways will be of interest to administrators and policy-makers; pavement, materials, geotechnical, environmental, and traffic operations engineers; and research engineers involved with highway design and construction issues. Information is provided on the uses of rubber tires in asphalt paving materials as well as other uses, such as on fills and embankments, for erosion control and on railroad grade crossings. Specifically, information is included which identifies the agencies using or implementing applications for recycled rubber tires and defines the design parameters, technical and construction limitations, performance, costs, benefits, environmental limitations, specifications, and availability. This synthesis of information defines the use of recycled rubber tires in highways and is based on a review of nearly 500 references and on information recorded from state highway agency responses to a 1991 survey of practice. Updates are included for as much of the state practice information possible through 1993. The use of scrap tires for highway applications is dynamic with regard to policy and technical issues. Therefore, the reader should keep in mind that the information presented reflects the best available data at a particular time. The synthesis also identifies current research in the topic area, critical research needs, and legislative issues that affect application and use of recycled rubber tires.

Book excerpt: This dissertation consists of two parts that are aimed at increasing the use of recycled materials in pavement structures. This first part summarizes the results of a research study that involved the construction of four test sections as part of a pavement resurfacing project to examine the performance of different ground tire rubber (GTR) modified mixes and compare them to that of a conventional polymer modified mix. In the first section (control section), a styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymer modified asphalt binder meeting performance grade (PG) 70-22M was used in the surface course mixture. Furthermore, the surface course mixtures used in the other three sections a PG 64-22 asphalt binder modified with 7% cryogenic GTR (CR GTR), a PG 64-22 binder modified with 6% cryogenic GTR and 0.5% anti-settling agent (CR GTR+ ASA), and a PG 64-22 binder modified with 7% ambient GTR (AM GTR). All asphalt mixtures included 20% reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). Samples of the GTR modified asphalt binders were obtained at the asphalt terminal and asphalt plant and were tested to evaluate the tendency of the different types GTR particles to separate from the modified binder. In addition, samples of the GTR and polymer modified mixes were obtained during construction and were compacted in the laboratory.

Book excerpt: Asphalt binder modification is a common method of improving Hot-mix Asphalt (HMA) performance by enhancing mix properties and reducing or delaying three general HMA distress types: deformation (rutting and shoving), cracking (from repeated loads and low temperatures) and general deterioration (raveling and stripping). Since the early 1960’s, a common modified asphalt alternative has employed reclaimed rubber as an economical and environmental friendly method of recycling waste tires while improving asphalt physical and mechanical properties. Pavement network deterioration combined with increasing material costs makes polymer modification of asphalt binder desirable, with reclaimed rubber from waste tires being an attractive alternative which addresses performance, economics and environmental issues. The primary objective of this dissertation is to demonstrate the importance of proper processing of all types of modified bituminous binders, whether they be virgin (e.g. styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) or styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR)), post-consumer polymers (e.g. ground tire rubber (GTR)) or a combination (GTR plus SBS). To achieve this four secondary objectives were identified: 1) characterize GTR using thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), 2) improve processing of GTR modified binders, 3) improve testing and specifications of GTR modified binders and 4) evaluate mixes containing GTR modified binders. A simple efficient instrumental, TGA, method to analyze polymers in binary rubber compounds was developed to quantify the functional polymer content available in GTR. TGA analysis provides a better understanding of the general chemical characteristics of GTR used in modification of asphalt binders for production of asphalt paving mixtures. Results are presented from efforts to optimize GTR modified binder formulations with respect to how GTR loading, GTR particle size, processing temperature and asphalt cement source affect modified binder properties and ability to meet performance graded binder specifications. These results are the basis to establish recommended processing parameters for formulation and preparation of GTR modified asphalt binders. GTR modified binders were used in: dense graded asphalt (DGA), stone matrix asphalt (SMA) and open graded friction courses (OGFC) and compared to conventional asphalt cement and styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modified asphalt binders. Mixture performance evaluation with respect to binder effectiveness as it relates to the three general HMA distress types.

Book excerpt: The improvement of road user comfort associated with environmental protection by waste disposal has been incentive to the modification of bituminous binders by incorporating powdered rubber recovered from used tires. The adhesive properties of rubber-bitumen binders make it possible to construct porous asphalt surfacings the advantages of which lie in easy drainage of surface water, resistance to skidding, flexibility at low temperatures, and reduced noise levels. The construction of such surfacings involves the introduction of powdered rubber into the bitumen, in a known proportion which must be controlled. It is also important to be able to determine the binder content of such mixtures while allowing for the presence of rubber. The procedure for the cold extraction of the bitumen and the separation of the insoluble constituents by centrifugation is modified to enable powdered rubber to be distinguished from aggregates. This separation is obtained by suspending the rubber in trichloroethylene and then filtrating.

This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract : The accumulation of waste tires generates severe environmental issues. Using crumb rubber processed from waste tires on the pavement could relieve the pressure of waste tire on the environment and improve the performance of the pavement as well. The application of crumb rubber on the pavement using the dry process was proved to be a cost-effective strategy in some projects, however, the interaction between the rubber and asphalt binder was unknown in the rubber modified asphalt mixture using the dry process, especially when reclaimed asphalt pavement was adopted. The performance improvement of the rubber particle to the asphalt mixture was closely related to the interaction. The influence of aging on the characteristics of rubber modified asphalt mixture using the dry process is critical to its long-term performance. The scope of the dissertation is to evaluate the performance of rubber modified asphalt mixture using a dry process when reclaimed asphalt pavement was adopted. The influence of aging on the characteristics of the rubber modified asphalt mixture and the extracted asphalt binder were investigated. This dissertation proposed the volumetric design of rubber modified asphalt mixture using the dry process. The aggregate gradation determination, rubber modified asphalt mixture preparation, design binder content determination, and moisture susceptibility evaluation were proposed. The quality control of the laboratory mixture design procedure was critical to guarantee the consistency of the asphalt mixture design in the laboratory and the results of mixture construction in the plant. The high temperature rutting performance and the low temperature cracking performance of plant mixed and laboratory compacted asphalt mixture was evaluated. The influence of various factors, which included mixture design parameters of the asphalt mixture (nominal maximum aggregate size, reclaimed asphalt pavement content, and asphalt content), rubber modification, mixture air void content, test temperature, and aging procedure, on the rutting and low temperature characteristics of asphalt mixtures were evaluated. Based on the evaluation of different assessment parameters, the rubber addition and the rubber addition and aging were the two most critical factors that influenced the rutting and low temperature cracking performance of different asphalt mixtures. The effect of the Trichloroethylene solvent in asphalt binder was investigated, and the extracted asphalt binder was assessed and compared with the base asphalt binder and rubber modified base asphalt binder. Both the existence of Trichloroethylene and the content of Trichloroethylene had a significant influence on the |G*| of unaged and PAV aged asphalt binder. The Trichloroethylene in the extracted asphalt binder significantly influenced the actual performance of the asphalt binder in the reclaimed asphalt binder, thus potentially compromising the success mixture design. The modified extraction procedure was proposed to improve the accuracy of the extraction procedure. The rubber particles in the asphalt mixture using the dry process were not totally interacted with asphalt binder, only the interacted rubber particles were extracted, and the influence of the interacted rubber particle was assessed. The aged asphalt binder weakened the low temperature performance of the extracted asphalt binder. The aged asphalt binder and rubber in extracted asphalt binder guaranteed the asphalt binder to sustain heavy traffic load, thus improved the permanent deformation resistance of asphalt binder.
