Book Synopsis Alcohol Use Across the Life Course by : Kaye Middleton Fillmore
Download or read book Alcohol Use Across the Life Course written by Kaye Middleton Fillmore and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Health Organization commissioned this review of longitudinal studies of drinking patterns and alcohol-related problems to evaluate the contributions, needs and limitations of longitudinal research. The review also develops guidelines and recommendations for future longitudinal studies of human alcohol use in different regions of the world. In addition, it identifies the lack of cross-study comparison to epidemiological description and demonstrates ways in which individual longitudinal studies can contribute to epidemiological description across historical periods, cultures and age cohorts. It then examines three diverse explanations of longitudinal drinking patterns and problems from the perspectives of biology, sociology and psychology, addressing how concretely replicated they are and how they are confounded by methodological problems. Finally, it develops strategies for future research.
Book Synopsis Data Quality in Longitudinal Research by : David Magnusson
Download or read book Data Quality in Longitudinal Research written by David Magnusson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This overview of the central issues of data quality in longitudinal research focuses on data relevant for studying individual development. The topics covered include reliability, validity, sampling, aggregation, and the correspondence between theory and method. More specific, practical issues in longitudinal research, such as the drop-out problem and issues of confidentiality are also addressed. The volume is the result of an interdisciplinary endeavor by leading European scientists to discuss appropriate ways of handling various types of longitudinal data, including psychiatric data, alcohol data, and criminal data.
Book Synopsis Quality of Life in Alcohol Dependents by : John Foster
Download or read book Quality of Life in Alcohol Dependents written by John Foster and published by Nova Science Pub Incorporated. This book was released on 2007 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a paucity of studies that have investigated the quality of life (QoL) of alcohol dependent individuals. Intuitively because there are deleterious physical and psychological health consequences resulting from alcohol consumption it is possible to put forward the hypothesis that not-relapsing to heavy drinking will result in an improved QoL and in contrast that the consequences of relapsing to heavy drinking will be a deterioration in QoL. The present book tests this hypothesis and also seeks to ascertain those variables that are predictors of outcome. In addition it examines the role played by sociodemographic and other confounding factors in the QoL of alcohol-dependent individuals.

Book Synopsis Alcohol Use Among Adolescents by : Michael Windle
Download or read book Alcohol Use Among Adolescents written by Michael Windle and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 1999-06-25 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescent alcohol use is prominent among today′s teens and has elicited rising concerns among parents, health practitioners, social policymakers, and the public at large. Yet there is an absence of a relatively concise book that summarizes and integrates existing knowledge on the various facets of adolescent alcohol use. This book attempts to fill this void by integrating research from the multiple fields of study (e.g., prevalence of use), describing measurement approaches (e.g., survey and clinical diagnostic), reviewing risk and protective factors, reporting on findings from prominent prevention and treatment studies, and suggesting future research directions. The coverage is intended to examine issues relevant to etiology, developmental courses, and prevention and treatment, as well as to identify future research directions.
Book Synopsis Reducing Underage Drinking by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Reducing Underage Drinking written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-03-26 with total page 761 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcohol use by young people is extremely dangerous - both to themselves and society at large. Underage alcohol use is associated with traffic fatalities, violence, unsafe sex, suicide, educational failure, and other problem behaviors that diminish the prospects of future success, as well as health risks â€" and the earlier teens start drinking, the greater the danger. Despite these serious concerns, the media continues to make drinking look attractive to youth, and it remains possible and even easy for teenagers to get access to alcohol. Why is this dangerous behavior so pervasive? What can be done to prevent it? What will work and who is responsible for making sure it happens? Reducing Underage Drinking addresses these questions and proposes a new way to combat underage alcohol use. It explores the ways in which may different individuals and groups contribute to the problem and how they can be enlisted to prevent it. Reducing Underage Drinking will serve as both a game plan and a call to arms for anyone with an investment in youth health and safety.

Book Synopsis Triumphs of Experience by : George E. Vaillant
Download or read book Triumphs of Experience written by George E. Vaillant and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-30 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when many people around the world are living into their tenth decade, the longest longitudinal study of human development ever undertaken offers some welcome news for the new old age: our lives continue to evolve in our later years, and often become more fulfilling than before. Begun in 1938, the Grant Study of Adult Development charted the physical and emotional health of over 200 men, starting with their undergraduate days. The now-classic Adaptation to Life reported on the men’s lives up to age 55 and helped us understand adult maturation. Now George Vaillant follows the men into their nineties, documenting for the first time what it is like to flourish far beyond conventional retirement. Reporting on all aspects of male life, including relationships, politics and religion, coping strategies, and alcohol use (its abuse being by far the greatest disruptor of health and happiness for the study’s subjects), Triumphs of Experience shares a number of surprising findings. For example, the people who do well in old age did not necessarily do so well in midlife, and vice versa. While the study confirms that recovery from a lousy childhood is possible, memories of a happy childhood are a lifelong source of strength. Marriages bring much more contentment after age 70, and physical aging after 80 is determined less by heredity than by habits formed prior to age 50. The credit for growing old with grace and vitality, it seems, goes more to ourselves than to our stellar genetic makeup.
