Book excerpt: An important objective in the development of a full-pressure suit for a human being is to permit the wearer full mobility without interfering with physical capability. Although the human skin is stretched during body motion, there is virtually no stretch along certain lines, here called lines of nonextension. The investigation was undertaken to determine the efficacy of utilizing lines of nonextension to provide natural mobility and minimal ballooning in full-pressure suits. The program of investigation pursued was: (1) to map out these lines of nonextension, (2) to test whether string elements of high elastic modulus, a connected network, could be laid along these lines of nonextension without providing any constraint to mobility, (3) to obtain a highly mobile pressure-retaining layer to be constrained by the net, and (4) to construct and demonstrate an entire pressure-retaining garment system that makes use of all necessary layers and string elements in a completely connected, netted covering for the body, with minimal constraint to mobility up to 5 psi. A mobile, pressure-retaining garment was developed by building each structural, functional layer into the composite garment in accordance with the basic design theory.

Download or read book Dressing for Altitude written by Dennis R. Jenkins and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2012-08-27 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Since its earliest days, flight has been about pushing the limits of technology and, in many cases, pushing the limits of human endurance. The human body can be the limiting factor in the design of aircraft and spacecraft. Humans cannot survive unaided at high altitudes. There have been a number of books written on the subject of spacesuits, but the literature on the high-altitude pressure suits is lacking. This volume provides a high-level summary of the technological development and operational use of partial- and full-pressure suits, from the earliest models to the current high altitude, full-pressure suits used for modern aviation, as well as those that were used for launch and entry on the Space Shuttle. The goal of this work is to provide a resource on the technology for suits designed to keep humans alive at the edge of space."--NTRS Web site.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As diverse as tomorrow’s society constituent groups may be, they will share the common requirements that their life should become safer and healthier, offering higher levels of effectiveness, communication and personal freedom. The key common part to all potential solutions fulfilling these requirements is wearable embedded systems, with longer periods of autonomy, offering wider functionality, more communication possibilities and increased computational power. As electronic and information systems on the human body, their role is to collect relevant physiological information, and to interface between humans and local and/or global information systems. Within this context, there is an increasing need for applications in diverse fields, from health to rescue to sport and even remote activities in space, to have real-time access to vital signs and other behavioral parameters for personalized healthcare, rescue operation planning, etc. This book’s coverage will span all scientific and technological areas that define wearable monitoring systems, including sensors, signal processing, energy, system integration, communications, and user interfaces. Six case studies will be used to illustrate the principles and practices introduced.
