Book excerpt: Results are presented of a study of nursing and nursing education that focused on the need for continued federal support of nursing education, ways to attract nurses to medically underserved areas, and approaches to encourage nurses to stay in the profession. Findings are presented on whether the aggregate supply of generalist nurses will be sufficient to meet future demand, and how changes that could occur in the health care system might affect demand. Attention is also directed to: how the current and future supply of nurses may be influenced by the costs of nursing education and the sources of education financing; and education for generalist positions in nursing. In addition, the supply and demand situation for nurses educationally prepared for advanced professional positions in nursing is examined. The influence of employer policies and practices in utilization of nursing resources on demand and supply is also addressed. Finally, areas in which further data and studies are needed to better monitor nursing supply and demand are identified. In addition to 21 recommendations, appendices include information on Nursing Training Act appropriations, state reports on nursing issues, certificates for specialist registered nurses, projections of registered nurse supply and requirements, and doctoral programs in nursing. Book Synopsis Academic Libraries and Public Engagement With Science and Technology by : Eileen Harrington
Download or read book Academic Libraries and Public Engagement With Science and Technology written by Eileen Harrington and published by Chandos Publishing. This book was released on 2019-04-11 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Libraries have historically played a role as a community builder, providing resources and spaces where knowledge can be archived, shared and created. They can also play a pivotal role in fostering the public's understanding of science and scientific processes. From makerspaces to data visualization labs to exhibits, many libraries already delve into scientific explorations and many more could join them. Scientists often need to include "broader impacts" goals in grant proposals, but they might not know where to begin or feel that they do not have the time to devote to public engagement. This is where libraries and librarians can help. Research in science communication also supports tapping into libraries for public engagement with science. Studies show that it is important for scientists to present findings in an apolitical way-not aligning with one solution or one way of thinking and not being seen as an activist (Druckman, 2015; Jamieson & Hardy, 2014). One of the core tenets of librarians and libraries is to present information in a neutral way. Research also shows that Informal conversations about science can have a greater effect on people than reading about it online or hearing about it on the news (Eveland & Cooper, 2013). Again, libraries can play a role in fostering these types of conversations. Given this landscape, this book will demonstrate concrete ways that libraries and librarians can play a role in fostering public engagement with science. In addition to background information on the current landscape of public knowledge and understanding of science, it will also include best practices and case studies of different types of programming and services that libraries can offer. Often libraries do not jump to mind when people think about science education or science literacy, and many librarians do not come from a science background. Literature on science programming and sharing science is largely absent from the library field. This book will help give confidence to librarians that they can participate in engaging the public with science. At the same time, it will provide a conduit to bring informal science educators, communication officers from universities or research organizations who share scientific discoveries with the public, and librarians together to explore ways to align their work to promote scientific literacy for all. Demonstrates concrete ways that libraries and librarians can play a role in fostering public engagement with science Features best practices and case studies of different types of programming and services that libraries can offer Provides a conduit to bring informal science educators, communication officers, and librarians together to explore ways to align their work to promote scientific literacy
Book Synopsis Navigating the Maze of Nursing Research by : Debra Jackson
Download or read book Navigating the Maze of Nursing Research written by Debra Jackson and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2007-11-20 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introductory level text for the Australian and New Zealand market, Navigating the Maze of Nursing Research 2e is simple, lucid and down to earth. There are many higher order research texts for health related disciplines but none other specifically aimed at the beginning student who has a limited understanding of what nursing is, let alone research. Navigating the Maze of Nursing Research 2e is interactive and fun to use - not a ‘heavy' text, but brimming with up-to-date ideas and practical hints. The text promotes nurses as ‘knowledge workers', life long learners able to access and broker pertinent information efficiently and effectively. Geared more towards nurses as users of research rather than doers, the text is nevertheless steeped in the premise that nurses do conduct research and lots of it, and that evidence-based practice underpins success. Organised in three sections that address what is nursing knowledge, how is research conducted, and how it is applied in practice, this 2nd edition features contributions from prominent nurse academics with vast research experience. Cornerstone chapters such as ‘Getting the most out of the library' and ‘Surfing the internet' are retained and revised, and important new chapters include ‘Mixed methods research' and ‘What the future holds for nursing research'. Student challenges and information about differing agencies and web site addresses are updated, and the Evolve website expanded to accommodate student activities, test banks and quizzes on the one interactive facility. Updated information about agencies, web site addresses and student challenges. Increased focus on Australian and New Zealand examples, highlighting the work of local nursing scholars. ‘Tips for International Students' integrated throughout. ‘Did you know' question at the beginning of each chapter encourages quizzical and critical thinking. Extensive pedagogy facilitates readability and includes learning objectives, student quotes, key terms chapter abstracts, Evolve icons, resource kits and references in each chapter.
