Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poems by the First World War Army Chaplain nicknamed 'Woodbine Willy' for his habit of handing out Woodbine cigarettes to the men in the trenches. WOODBINE WILLIE They gave me this name like their nature, Compacted of laughter and tears, A sweet that was born of the bitter, A joke that was torn from the years. Of their travail and torture, Christ's fools, Atoning my sins with their blood, Who grinned in their agony sharing The glorious madness of God. Their name! Let me hear it-the symbol Of unpaid-unpayable debt, For the men to whom I owed God's Peace, I put off with a cigarette. INDIFFERENCE When Jesus came to Golgotha they hanged Him on a tree, They drave great nails through hands and feet, and made a Calvary; They crowned Him with a crown of thorns, red were His wounds and deep, For those were crude and cruel days, and human flesh was cheap. When Jesus came to Birmingham they simply passed Him by, They never hurt a hair of Him, they only let Him die; For men had grown more tender, and they would not give Him pain, They only just passed down the street, and left Him in the rain. Still Jesus cried, "Forgive them, for they know not what they do," And still it rained the wintry rain that drenched Him through and through; The crowds went home and left the streets without a soul to see, And Jesus crouched against a wall and cried for Calvary.

Book excerpt: These poems are largely from the First World War. In their simplicity, they touch the hearts of all who read them. Their vivid portrayal of the futility of war and of the humanity of those engaged in it makes them rank among the poems of Rupert Brooke, Wilfrid Owen and Siegried Sassoon. G.A Studdert Kennedy was a British Army Chaplain in the First World War, nick-named, Woodbine Willie, because he used to give Woodbines - a brand of cigarette - to soldiers in the trenches. He was decorated for bravery because while under fire he tended the wounded in no-man's land. Most of the poems in this book are from the First World War. Studdert-Kennedy is no pious parson. He calls into question the love of God. The shortest poem of only four lines describes the effect of news being delivered to a family: Just a little scrap of paperIn a yellow envelope,And the whole world is a ruin,Even Hope.THE SNIPER illustrates the brutalising effect of war. In a matter of fact way, the British sniper talks us through shooting a German through the head - and then asks for his cup of tea. When you read, WHAT'S THE USE OF A CROSS TO 'IM? you will not know whether to wince or cry. A soldier is asked to make a cross for his dead comrade.Among the war poems are a handful of others, the most well-known of which is INDIFFERENCE. When Jesus came to Golgotha they hanged Him on a tree, They drave great nails through hands and feet, and made a Calvary; They crowned Him with a crown of thorns, red were His wounds and deep, For those were crude and cruel days, and human flesh was cheap. This book is a book for all and for all time.

Book excerpt: Two streams run through the Western philosophical stream: one characterized by Being, beings, the unchanging, the static, and the unitary; and the other by Action, actions, the changing, the dynamic, and the diverse. The former might be represented by Parmenides, Plato, and much of what followed; the latter by Heraclitus, and by rather less of what followed. The book explores the "Action" stream as it wound its way through history, through Heraclitus, Plato, Aristotle, Hegel, Maurice Blondel, Henri Bergson, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, process philosophy and theology, Geoffrey Studdert Kennedy, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and John Boys Smith. The journey enables us to create the beginnings of an "actology": a way of seeing ourselves, the universe, and God in terms of actions in patterns rather than as beings that change. Such an actology offers a complete alternative narrative far more in tune with the diverse and rapidly changing world in which we live than the ontology that has shaped philosophy, theology, and much else for the past two thousand years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are no words foul and filthy enough to describe war. So declared Geoffrey Woodbine Willie Studdert Kennedy (1883-1929), a decorated frontline chaplain whose battlefield experiences in World War I transformed him into his generation's most eloquent defender of Christian pacificism. Studdert Kennedy was also a tireless champion of the social gospel who wrote a dozen books, scores of articles, hundreds of poems, and preached countless sermons in both the UK and the US promoting economic justice. Studdert Kennedy's writing and preaching influenced an entire generation. William Temple, Archbishop of Canterbury, described him as a true prophet. Even though he's fallen into obscurity with the passage of years, Studdert Kennedy's message still inspires the likes of Desmond Tutu and Jÿrgen Moltmann. This collection of Studdert Kennedy's work, the first in sixty years, seeks to introduce this most relevant of thinkers to our troubled times. The book pulls together Studdert Kennedy's most important writings on war and peace, poverty, the problem of evil, the church's role in the world, sin and atonement, the suffering God, love versus force as world powers, and the beloved community. Editor Kerry Walters introduces the texts with a biographical and thematic essay.

Book excerpt: In God’s Patience and our Work Ben Fulford argues that Hans Frei’s theology and ethics offers unheralded but valuable resources for thinking about the social and political engagement of Christian communities in pluralistic societies in light of hope in Jesus Christ. He shows how Frei’s project of recovering the conditions for and shape of a generous orthodoxy runs through his work, offering broad, flexible vision of Christian identity, ethical responsibility and humanistic witness, focused in the person and presence of Jesus Christ. In dialogue with liberation theologies, Fulford draws from Frei an account of divine patience and providence to frame hopeful, pragmatic Christian participation in work for dignity, justice and penultimate reconciliation, rooted in new and deeper contextual reading of his work.
