That declaration provoked an all-out war against that young state, and the novel incorporates the wholesale destruction of life carried out by the Nigerian Army. The conflict dragged out for three long years, during which time unimaginable bombing, shelling, murder, rape, and abduction of women and girls were carried out by the invading army. Hunger was used as a weapon of war, and children, the elderly, and many more lost their lives from hunger and starvation. Lamentably, the novel recounts that the new nation, poorly equipped and ill prepared for such a protracted war, lost the war at the end of three years. It sadly concludes that after the three long years of suffering and untold anguish. With a loss of about two million Igbo civilians, they were forced back in Nigeria. After the war, life of the Igbos continued to be hard. They still felt disliked, unwanted, and unhappy for nothing they had done wrong.

The myriad ethnic groups shared nothing cherishable and never managed to find commonality of purpose or civic principle, no small thanks to colonial policies predicated on divide et impera. As a result, the indigenous political class was bequeathed a toxic legacy of interethnic suspicion, incoherence, and disharmony at independence in 1960. Crisis followed crisis, until the armed forces intervened and the First Republic collapsed in 1966. A further cascade of tragic events, including the mass slaughter of people of the East, caused that region to proclaim itself the independent sovereign Republic of Biafra in 1967. A civil war ensued, and the critical developments during the crucial combat period are exhaustively chronicled. The Biafran capital, Enugu, fell after three months of bitter fighting. A war of attrition ensued, lasting twenty-seven more months, during which at least one million babies and children succumbed to inanition. The Nigeria-Biafra War stands out ignominiously as one of the very rare conflicts in modern history in which one of the belligerents overtly declared its intention to starve its adversary into submission and clung to that policy even when it became abundantly clear that the victims were predominantly babies. No proper accounting has been demanded or given. The Igbo were the largest of the ethnic groups in the Republic of Biafra. They had been in the vanguard of the struggle for Nigeria's independence and unity but paradoxically became the whipping boy in the postcolonial era when the country lost its collective mind. They were subjected to untold savagery before as well as during the civil war, whose repercussions they continue to suffer to the present day. Their ethnography is explored in the context of both the conflict and the entirety of their Nigerian experience.

This dominance, however, was never supposed to be total or absolute. Nevertheless, it managed to cast a constricting shadow-with its associated, if unhealthy, ambience-on the day-to-day lives of the people using the overwhelming military and economic power at its disposal at a time when Africans were either recovering from five hundred years of stupor brought on by its own dark ages (AD 1100-1600) or the shock and paralysis that followed the Moroccan (Mohamedan) and Spanish-mercenary-assisted mayhem and chaos of 1591 against the African kingdoms of West Africa. But the white man would soon lose most of his political and economic opportunities, and some of the absolute attributes he had mustered over the years the moment Britain and the other European races saw themselves as divinely appointed to right the wrongs of mankind. He would, from then on, render himself vulnerable to the tide of African enlightenment and progress, which was then building up everywhere, once the trade by which he had gained his ascendency over the other races of mankind began to decline. In addition, European ascendency witnessed an unusual reversal of luck when its residual strengths, recently boosted with the development of some newer types of weaponry-the Maxim machine gun in the UK (1883) and the Mauser Machine gun (1891) in Germany-weapons whose astonishing power and versatility had not previously been seen or tested in any battlefront, became more widely available to European and non-European troops. These, however, could not provide definitive answers to all the tactical and strategic imperatives of the developing new battlefront which European armies had sought. Nevertheless, these new weapons became celebrated after they were successfully used to hold the line and repel hordes of brave native fighters armed only with machetes and spears (South Africa) and bows and arrows (Kitchener's Sudan), enabling British forces to claim easy victories over the native forces; several Victoria Crosses would be won on both battlefronts by the British army. The success of the campaigns clearly went to the heads of the victorious army commanders. Thus were sown the seeds that would grow, leading to the idea of invincibility of the white man in the battlefield and the tragic events that preceded the First World War (1914-1918).
