Book excerpt: The factors contributing to the greatness of a first-rank liberal arts college are difficult to analyze. Hidden from view in the mysteries of tradition and institutional aura, the insistent questions remain: How has it been done? Can it still be done? In an intensive analysis of three highly regarded liberal arts colleges, Burton R. Clark uses a developmental approach to formal organization to seek out answers to these questions. The author begins with a presentation of the historical development of three colleges, Antioch, Reed, and Swarthmore. He describes in detail how broad institutional innovations were introduced and made to endure. He then carefully notes the unique events, special conditions, and unusual features that are the components of each institution's fabric. Each of the three narratives is guided by comparative categories, that produce analytical and theoretical insights into organizational development. From the above data Clark develops the concept of the "organizational saga" as the central ingredient in the making of the distinctive college. He explains this concept in terms of organizational role and mission, using the historical narratives of the first section to suggest the bases for the development of sagas. In its empirical findings and conceptual formulations, The Distinctive College, first published in 1970, has played an important role in the analysis and understanding of college culture in contemporary America. It is a study of leadership, as well as an examination of how values are realized in the everyday routine of participants in the life of educational organizations. It remains the premier sociological study of institution building in American higher education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continental philosophy of education and North American educational thinking are two traditions of their own, yet it is fruitful to compare for similarities and differences between the two and thus generate interest in a mutual dialogue and exchange between European and North American of philosophy of education. The present book analyzes theoretical thinking on education from the standpoints of both traditions. The book deals with continental educational thinking while discussing the notion of Bildung and its diversity, from J.A.Comenius to Th. Adorno. In addition, the book discusses the idea of growth inherited from American progressive education and classical Pragmatism. The various contributors to the book offer insights to the theoretical discussion on education, and specify the historical and thematic connections between different thinking models. The book shows that connections between continental educational theories and classical Pragmatism are stronger than generally assumed. As such, the book invites the readers to challenge their own prejudices and views on Bildung and growth, and the relationship between them. “Education would be tyranny if it did not lead to freedom.” (J.F. Herbart) “The teacher who can get along by keeping spontaneous interest excited must be regarded as the teacher with the greatest skill.” (W. James)

Book Synopsis Co-Learning in Higher Education by : Edward P. St. John
Download or read book Co-Learning in Higher Education written by Edward P. St. John and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-14 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Co-Learning in Higher Education addresses topics critical to the future of higher education: the wellbeing of communities, engagement of scholars supporting new generations of social activists, and the renewal and expansion of educational and career pathways. It develops a theory of co-learning that engages students and professors across generations in partnerships with community organizations, schools, and corporations that solve emerging social and environmental challenges. Collaboratively written cases discuss community projects, engaging pedagogies, and action research projects. These co-cases demonstrate the power of using critical pedagogies and social action within troubling contexts, rather than assuming public policy changes are the only solution. Contributors explore mentoring, discuss pedagogies that promote community wellbeing and equity, address the urgency of change in universities, and reflect on the implications of this chaotic period for empowering social agency among youth in rising generations. This is a timely volume for scholars and students in higher education and educational policy.
