Book excerpt: Science is said to be on the verge of achieving the ancient dream of making objects invisible. Invisible is a biography of an idea, tied to the history of science over the "longue duree." Taking in Plato to today s science, Ball shows us that the stories we have told about invisibility are not in fact about technical capability but about power, sex, concealment, morality, and corruption. Precisely because they refer to matters that lie beyond our senses, unseen beings and worlds have long been a repository for hopes, fears, and suppressed desires. Ideas of invisibility are, like all ideas rooted in legend, ultimately parables about our own potential and weaknesses. Invisible presents the first comprehensive survey of the roles that the idea of invisibility has played throughout time and culture. This territory takes us from medieval grimoires to cutting-edge nanotechnology, from fairy tales to telecommunications, from camouflage to early cinematography, and from beliefs about ghosts to the dawn of nuclear physics and the discovery of dark energy. Invisible reveals what our age-old fantasies about what lurks unseen, and whether we can enter that realm ourselves, truly say about us. "

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although a report by the congressionally mandated Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction, Proliferation, and Terrorism concluded that biological or nuclear weapons were very likely to be unleashed in the years soon after 2001, what Americans actually have experienced are relatively low-tech threats. Yet even under a new administration, extraordinary domestic and international policies enacted by the U.S. government in the wake of 9/11 remain unchanged. Political scientist and former FBI consultant Michael Barkun argues that a nonrational, emotion-driven obsession with dangers that cannot be seen has played and continues to play an underrecognized role in sustaining the climate of fear that drives the U.S. "war on terror." Barkun identifies a gap between the realities of terrorism--"violence without a return address--and the everyday discourse about it among government officials and the general public. Demonstrating that U.S. homeland security policy reflects significant nonrational thinking, Barkun offers new recommendations for effective--and rational--policymaking.

Book excerpt: "A World of Demons: The Villains of Doctor Who”“One may tolerate a world of demons for the sake of an angel”—Jean-Antoninette (“Reinette”) Poisson, aka Madame de Pompadour, “The Girl in the Fireplace”What a world of demons Doctor Who has presented us with over the past seven decades: from Daleks and Cybermen to Weeping Angels and the Silence, the greatest villains of the Who-niverse have achieved an iconic status all their own, cementing themselves in the minds of millions of viewers (why else would Parker Brothers have devised a version of Monopoly after them?). If, as the Seventh Doctor once said, "You can always judge a man by the quality of his enemies,” the Doctor is great indeed, rescuing the universe time and again from some of the most formidable and terrifying villains in science fiction history. Now, for the first time, an entire anthology of essays is dedicated to deconstructing this gallery of blackguards. Who are the greatest Who villains of all time? Why are they so frightening? And—apologies to Shakespeare—what do they tell us about the villainy of our own fears?Featuring essays by Joseph Dougherty (executive producer, Pretty Little Liars; producer, thirtysomething), Steven Ashby, Anton Binder, Sarah Corey, Ken Deep, Jan Fennick, Hannah Friedman, Mark Givens, Nancy Hutchins, Jennie Jarvis, Don Klees, Chris Kocher, Robin Koman, Charles Martin, Michael Robinson, Steve Sautter, and Shane Thomas.Edited by David Bushman (Conversations with Mark Frost) and Barnaby Edwards (president, Doctor Who New York)

This provocative book will help Christians understand what the Bible says about these threats and will show them how they can safeguard themselves and their families through prayer. Now repackaged for a new generation, The Invisible War offers a balanced look at what is going on in the spiritual realm and what believers can do to defend themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All too often problems of biblical hermeneutics are too closely linked to technical biblical study rather than to the day-by-day issues confronting the church. Here, however, eight international scholars from seven countries show how such studies can have vital relevance to today's immediate problems and needs. The writers focus on the biblical doctrine of the church itself and how the church carries out its mission in various cultures. Originally presented as lectures at Tyndale House in Cambridge, England, these essays have been revised in light of the discussion and criticism that followed. They include careful biblical analyses of the nature of the church, its opponents, and of such modern concerns as social justice and liberation theology. The result is a stimulating reassessment of the role that Scripture plays in bringing Christ to persons within their cultural contexts.

Book excerpt: Dr. Michael S. Heiser presents fifteen years of research on what the Bible really says about the unseen world of the supernatural, unfiltered by tradition or by theological presuppositions. Who were the sons of God? Who were the Nephilim? Where do angels fit into the supernatural hierarchy? What relation does Jesus bear to the rest of the supernatural world? Heiser tackles these questions and many more as he shines a light on the ancient context of Scripture. After reading this book, you may never read your Bible the same way again. In Supernatural, Heiser takes the core message from his recent best-seller, The Unseen Realm, and presents it for the person in the pew. He offers the same approach to reading and understanding Scripture, but without all the extra footnotes and supporting information needed for the scholarly treatment. “We can’t believe what we don’t understand. In Supernatural, Michael Heiser helps us to do both. It may open your eyes to the scripture in a new way.” —John Ortberg, author of If You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve Got to Get Out of the Boat

These are demons which are invisible spirit beings not made of flesh and blood which the movie industry portrays as monsters. These spirit persons or demons are the highest intelligent beings far more intelligent than any earthly being with all human characteristics. They were once angelic sons of Jehovah God. They consisted of one-third of the angelic sons. They conspired against their Creator God, along with their leader Lucifer, who was once an angelic son of God, a cherub of high ranking. They all were expelled and casted out of heaven down to earth. They became enemies of God and the human race. They became an invisible race of beings—demons or spirit persons but without bodies! The once angelic sons of God and Lucifer became demons. Lucifer was the first to make himself a demon and then became Satan, the devil, the chief of demons who now walk the earth transitioning as a real human being yet spirit cohabitating with the human race as a real person. The demons, the other beings, are also cohabitating as spirit persons just as you and I are spirit beings with bodies. However, thy are without bodies, not of flesh and blood. Demons are those wicked, evil spirit persons that exist throughout the world as demon spirits! Satan is the only demon who possesses transitional power to transition to a visible spirit person just as you and me, and transition back to spirit. This I’ve witnessed. The other one-third wicked spirit persons do not possess such power; however, demons possess superhuman strength and the highest intelligence of any human being. Yet these spirit persons or demons remain invisible to human eyes on earth. They are here to steal, kill, and destroy human lives by any means. Therefore, the entire world needs to know how to defend itself against a demonic attack, an attack which can’t be seen but feel and see the effect of. Persons by the multitudes are under attack by demonic powers and influences without any knowledge of what’s going on or any knowledge of what they are up against in the spiritual world. Many do not know or recognize whether it’s mentally or physically. Either one is as serious as the other. Also, multitudes aren’t aware of a spirit world! The world, the entire world, needs to know, to be educated of demonology. Children of God, the world, it can’t be stressed strong enough, the entire world, it’s imperative to be spiritually educated of demonology. It is essential and imperative that all humans are made aware that they live and cohabitate amongst evil, wicked spirit persons, the invisible enemies that are here to hurt or harm all of mankind. Age and gender are no exceptions!
