Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is part of the first complete translation (in nine volumes) of the Shih chi (The Grand Scribe's Records), one of the most important narratives in traditional China. Compiled by Ssu-ma Ch'ien (145-c. 86 B.C.), it draws upon most major early historical works and was the foremost model for style and genre in Chinese history and literature through the eleventh century A. D., and through the early twentieth century for some genres. Volume 7, The Memoirs of Pre_Han China, translates twenty-eight Lieh-chuan or "memoirs" which depict more than a hundred men and women: sages and scholars, recluses and rhetoricians, persuaders and politicians, commandants and cutthroats of the Ch'in and earlier dynasties. Although the memoirs also begin with what is now often considered myth—an account of the renowned recluses Po Yi and Shu Ch'i—the emphasis in these texts is on the fate of various states and power centers as seen through the biographies of key individuals from the seventh to the third centuries B. C.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Be careful trying to place blame, or it might come back to you,” Ceng Guangxian’s father warns him after the first time his good intentions end in ruin. Yet time and again as Guangxian comes of age, bad luck and his own desires for a bigger, better future wreak havoc upon his family, fortune, and social reputation, leaving him scrambling to find the causes of the mishaps that define his life. Dong Xi’s Record of Regret, here in its first English translation, introduces readers to a masterpiece of contemporary Chinese literature, and to the unparalleled tragicomic style of one of China’s most celebrated writers. Set in the wake of China’s Cultural Revolution, the novel follows Guangxian from his days as a middle school student to adulthood as a lonely, middle-aged man. Guangxian’s path of misery—which he meticulously documents—is driven by absurdity: his discovery of two dogs mating leads to his father’s infidelity with a neighbor; Guangxian’s attempts to court a woman with the gift of a new dress result in his imprisonment for rape; he selects a spouse through a catastrophic game of chance, drawing from a set of names scrawled on crumpled pieces of paper. Guangxian’s guilty conscience and youthful understanding of morality compound these disasters. Translated by Dylan Levi King to preserve the tone and engaging style of Dong Xi’s original text, Record of Regret provides English readers a look into a darkly humorous landscape of dubious loyalties and lessons, seen through the eyes of a man trying to find his place in an upside-down world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University Record, 1921, Vol. 7 In lieu of the usual Convocation address it has become the custom at the December Convocation to have a report by the President of the University covering in brief form the situation at the current time. This is, in many senses, a home Convocation, and the report is adapted, therefore, to the interest and information of members of the University. That post-war conditions in educational institutions are becoming nearly normal is evident throughout the entire country. This is made apparent by many factors, and among them by the record of attendance of students. The total registration during the quarter just closing is as against for the Autumn Quarter of. 1919. The gain is not large but is rather more than was expected under the present business and social conditions. In this connection it may be interesting to record the total attendance for several years past, Showing the effect of war on the University and the restoration of normal conditions. Book excerpt: This second volume of the ongoing annotated translation of Ssu-ma Ch'ien's Shi chi(The Grand Scribe's Records), widely acknowledged as the most important early Chinese history, contains the "basic annals" of five early Han-dynasty emperors. The annals trace the first century of Han rule (206 BC to ca. 100 BC) in a year-by-year account that focuses on imperial activities. In The Grand Scribe's Records, Ssu-ma Ch'ien revitalised the style of the annals he had written for previous rulers. Here are accounts of the peasant who founded the dynasty, Liu Pang, a man noted as much for his licentiousness as he was his ruthless political instinct, and of his cruel wife, Empress Lÿ, who murdered her chief rival for Liu Pang's affections in the most gruesome manner. The annals of two relatively undistinguished emperors follow. The volume concludes with Ssu-ma's depiction of perhaps the greatest ruler of the Han, Emperor Wu, told within the context of his delusive attempts to find a means to achieve immortality. When completed this translation will bring all 130 chapters of the Shih chi into English. Volumes 1 and 7 were published by Indiana University Press in 1994.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University Chronicle, Vol. 7: An Official Record; 1904-05 Within the last few months the civilized world has been united in commemorating the distinguished philosopher whose life ended at Kouigsberg a hundred years ago, but whose thoughts have been active and fruitful throughout the century that has closed and bid fair to continue their influence in the century that has now begun. In a short article, written in 1786, entitled: Was heisst: sich im Denken orientiren? Kant has provided us with a good starting-point for our present discussion. Sich orientieren, to orientate oneself or find one's bearings, means, says Kant, "in the literal sense of the words, from a given quarter of the globe, one of the four into which we divide the horizon, to fix the rest, in other words, to determine which is the east. If I see the sun in the sky and know that it is now noon, then I know how to find the south, west, north and east. For this purpose however one thing is indispensable, a 'feeling' of difference within myself as subject, the difference namely between the right hand and the left. Without this, being in the west say, I should not know whether to locate the south on the right or on the left.
