Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of Kansas Publications, Vol. 17: Museum of Natural History; 1965 1968 In the course of studying anatomy and systematics of fossil fishes from the Niobrara Formation I have several times sought the loca tion Of such places as Martin's Canyon, Robber's Roost or a site 3 miles North of Monument Rocks. In an effort to provide more adequate locality information I have consulted residents and county engineers of those counties in which chalk beds are exposed, talked with persons who have collected fossils from the chalk, examined U. S. Dept. Of Agriculture aerial photographs and geologic maps of pertinent counties, studied old maps and correspondence of col lectors and personally examined numerous chalk exposures. I have been able to determine range, township and in many cases section of the poorly defined localities in which early collections were made. It has been my primary interest to ascertain localities that have yielded specimens of fish. Because fossil reptiles and birds in the Niobrara Formation have generally come from the same sites as the fishes, localities of many reptilian and avian specimens may be determined from the information given below. Locality records of fossils derived from publications or museum catalogues are listed under the name Of the museum in which the fossil material is housed. Each locality is numbered for reference purposes within this paper. The numerical listing by county for material at the University Of Kansas corresponds to the numerical listing in the locality catalogue of the Division of Vertebrate Paleon tology. The original description of a locality is cited first in bold face type followed by a statement of section(s), township, and range as determined in this study. Where exposures from which the fossils were Obtained extend across more than one section, two or more sections are cited. Comments on the geologic horizon and geographic position of a locality as originally cited are given if necessary. Estimates of mileage by the older collectors were in many, but not all, instances less than the true mileage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of Kansas Publications, Museum of Natural History, Vol. 16: No. 5, Pp 439-472; April 18, 1966 Upon our arrival, at approximately eight o'clock (well after dark), we noted dozens of bats, perhaps as many as 100, foraging around the derrick. Many were SO high that they were difficult to see in the poor light; others foraged lower, less than 50 feet above the ground, and individuals occasionally swooped within 10 feet of us. The ight was erratic and fairly swift. In order to see the bats better, we adjusted two of the ood lights that illuminated the working areas at the rig so that the beams were cast almost directly upward. As if to avoid these lights, some bats left the immediate area and those that remained ew even higher than before; few came within range of our specially loaded shells. Thereupon, Richard Raines, one of the workers at the rig, climbed to a 98-foot-high platform on the derrick from where he shot five bats in about half an hour. According to Raines, some bats were ying at about the level of the platform but others ew as high as, or higher than, the 142 foot tower of the rig. Insofar as all of us could determine, all bats seen were D. Virgo. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Most of these were assembled at the University of Kansas Museum of Natural History, but some were examined in other institutions. Specimens were grouped by geographic origin, age, and sex. Studies of the role of age and sex in variation were made. Because it was discovered that secondary sexual variation was negligible, both males and females, if of like age and pelage, were used in comparisons designed to reveal geographic variation. External measurements used were total length, length of tail, and length of hind foot. After studying a number of cranial dimensions I chose those listed below as the most useful in showing differences in Size and proportions of the Skull. Figures 1 and 2 Show the points between which those measurements were taken. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Museum of Natural History: University of Kansas Lawrence The hybrid fishes described herein are Chrosomus erythrogaster (Rafinesque) X Notropis cornutus frontalis (Agassiz), C. erythrogaster X Semotilus atromaculatus (Mitchill), Campostoma anomalum plumbeum (Girard) X S. atromaculatus, Gila nigrescens (Girard) X Rhinichthys cataractae (Valenciennes), and Notropis venustus venustus (Girard) X Notropis whipplei (Girard). Two of the combinations have been reported, without descriptions, in literature (citations below), and Hubbs (1955: Fig. 3) graphically indicated hybridization between the same genera with which this paper is concerned, but did not designate the species involved. All specimens of C. erythogaster X N. c. frontalis, C. erythrogaster X S. atromaculatus, C. a. plumbeum X S. atromaculatus, and N. v. venustus X N. whipplei were taken in a period of severe drought in Kansas and Arkansas. All were from small, spring-fed streams that support large populations of fishes. That the drought of 1953-1956 had pronounced effects on stream habitats in Kansas has been documented by Minckley and Cross (1959). Satisfactory sites for spawning may have been few, but an abundance of adult fishes persisted from earlier, wet years. Unusual crowding of spawning fishes would increase the opportunity for fertilization of the eggs of one species by sperm from another species. We think that the hybrids reported here (excepting G. nigrescens X R. cataractae) are explainable on the basis of crowding; we have no information about stream-conditions where the last-named hybrid was found. Generally, hybridization of fishes seems most common in areas that have been subject to radical climatic change in the past 20,000 or fewer years (Hubbs, 1955: 18-19), and in streams that have been altered recently by the activities of man (Hubbs and Strawn, 1956: 342, and others). Streams from which we report hybrids probably were affected by overgrazing of their watersheds; overgrazing was unusually severe in the drought.
