Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Second Visit to the United States of North America, Vol. 1 of 2 To account for'the toleration prevailing in New England and the states chie y peopled from thence, we must refer to a com bination of many favorable circumstances, some of them of ancient date, and derived from the times of the first Puritan settlers. To these I shall have many opportunities of alluding in the sequel but I shall mention now a more modern cause, the effect of which was brought vividly before my mind, in conversations with sev eral lawyers of Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts, whom I fell in with on this tour. I mean the reaction against the extreme Calvinism of the church first established in this part of America, a movement which has had a powerful tendency to subdue and mitigate sectarian bitterness. In order to give me some idea of the length to which the old Calvinistic doctrines were instilled into the infant mind, one of my companions pre sented me with a curious poem, called the Day of Doom. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the United States of North America, Vol. 2: From the Discovery of the Western World to the Present Day It will be discovered, as we proceed, that outwardly, the administrations of Washington and Adams conducted the development we speak of, in a di rection exactly Opposite to that which has been followed by the expansions effected under the auspices of most of their successors. Inwardly, however, and in reality, there has been a wonderful harmony between these seemingly opposite paths of national progress. We shall have little difficulty in showing, that one effort has been the equipoise to the other, one growth the comple ment of the other; so thatmore has been effected than either party alone, or than both together, have aimed at; and whilst the stability of the nation has been insured, the influences and courses which could most endanger that stability have been made glaringly manifest to all; and such a pledge and assurance has been given of the guidance and blessing of the King of Nations, as may well remind all who aspire to control the affairs of the Commonwealth, of the principles which actuated those who most largely shared in its found ation, and by the operation of which alone, it, or any State, can attain to real and abiding greatness in the world. Such views as these may relieve of all dulness a narrative of 'the kind that lies before us; not factitiously, and by the introduction of materials foreign to the subject but by the display of the secret meaning and tendency of the events that make up the quiet round of commercial prosperity, of those trifling matters which appear only when massed in tables of statistics, and of the most exciting affairs of times of peace - contests-for office, legislative discussions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of North America, Vol. 1 of 2: Comprising, a Geographical and Statistical View of the United States, and of the British Canadian Possessions; Including a Great Variety of Important Information on the Subject of Emigrating to That Country IN presenting this work to the public, the Editor has been principally solicitous to lay before his read ers important facts; he has aimed much more to in form, than to amuse; he trusts, however, that its pages will not be found void of interest, even to those who read principally for amusement. The ori gin and rise of a mighty empire, however distant in point 'of time, and however little connected with present events, cannot be contemplated without feel ings powerfufly awakened. But when this empire has started into life in our own times; when its con cerns are intimately connected with our own desti nies, and come home to every man's business and bosom, it; becomes then an object of intense interest; and every individual must be anxious to be ao quainted with the mighty events which have produ oed so singular a phenomenon in the history of the world. It is not only the philosopher and the poli tician that are interested in the subjects treated of in this work; the humble cottager, and the industrious artizan are equally concerned in the destinies of a New World, which Providence in its mercy seems to have prepared as an asylum from the persecutions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on North America, Vol. 1 of 2: Agricultural, Economical, and Social I have given to the following volumes the title of "Notes," because I am conscious of the imperfect and hurried character of some of the observations they contain, and that mistakes, generally trivial I hope, and always unintentional, may be discovered in them by natives of North America. In recording my remarks and impressions, while I am sensible that I have regarded objects with the eyes and feelings of a "Britisher," and have generally written as if I were addressing British readers only; yet I have endeavoured to speak fairly and with candour, both of the institutions and of the social condition of the States and Provinces through which it was my fortune to travel. While I have expressed my opinions freely, I have endeavoured to avoid either ridicule or causeless reproach.
