Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States and Spain in 1822 On March 12, 1822, Anduaga sent to his government a copy of Monroe's message and of his protest. It is difficult to describe said Anduaga, the general applause with which this message has been received here without distinction of party. He affirmed that this message had been referred by the House of Representatives to the Committee on Foreign Relations merely as a matter of form; the United States, after having secured the cession of Florida from Spain, had virtually decided to recognize the independence of all the revolted provinces. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relations of the United States and Spain, Vol. 1: The Spanish-American War This work is intended in the main as a documentary history. An endeavor has been made to give all important orders, telegrams, and reports. It is not to be understood that these, or any considerable portion of them, are for the first time before the public. All of any real importance have already appeared in government publications or with governmental approval. The interior history of no war or other great event has ever before been so fully exposed as in the many volumes published by the American government and in the documents set forth with the authority of the government of Spain. These are given in detail in the bibliography. Using the words of the Messenger in Antigone, the writer can say, in part, "I saw"; and in whole: ... I will speak and hold back No syllable of the truth. Why should we soothe Your ears with stories, only to appear Liars thereafter? Truth is always right. This is the writer's view of history: neither to magnify our own exploits nor to depreciate those of the foe. We were comparatively strong in the material of war; he was weak; we had the initiative of the Anglo-Saxon, he the spirit of passive sacrifice which, as shown through history, has made the Spaniard strong in defence. Spain defeated was not Spain dishonored. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revelations of Spain in 1845, Vol. 1 of 2 The first six months of 1845 will be for ever memorable in the legislative annals of Spain, as having been marked by most important and extensive reforms in the Constitution of 1837 - changes so vast and so threatening to liberty, and at the same time so apparently definitive, as to merit still more than our own Reform Act, the name of a Revolution. The strong position accorded to the Spanish Church of re endowment with real property, and the several events which found their completion last month, in the close of the Cortes and the promulgation of the Con stitutional Reform, combine to give to this second edition, the character of almost a new and substantive work. About one hundred original pages have been added, embodying in the various chapters, under the fitting heads, a careful analysis of all the late constitutional and legislative reforms, and a com pletion of the History to the present hour. Amidst a quantity of new and interesting matter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Later History of British, Spanish, and Portuguese America HE most lavish liberality or generosity exhibited in this world of men is shown in the bestowal of a gift which does not belong to the donor Of it. In such cases there is generally a very Slight knowledge, if not an absolute ignorance, of the quality and value Of the gift; so the terms of it are likely to be not only very general but very loose and vague. Indeed, part of the charm of such a gift will consist in the undefined possibilities, the imagined revelations, which may go with it. The burdens and responsibilities attending the acceptance of it, and the trespasses upon the rights of others, the injuries likely to be inflicted upon them, and the struggles, animosities, and controversies, with the risk of final discom fiture, in the maintenance of such a possession, are either not taken into account, or are winked out of sight. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States and Spain in 1790: An Episode in Diplomacy Described From Hitherto Unpublished Sources The interest of the papers included in these pages lies in the light they throw upon the first question of diplomacy, which confronted the newly constituted government of the United States. During the Revolution diplomatic relations with European powers had been confined to offers of alliances, of commercial reciprocity and requests for financial aid; but the net result had been a treaty of alliance with France, which led to important results for the revolting colonies; a treaty of commerce with the same nation, that was entirely inoperative, thanks to the network of protective duties and prohibitions that closed the French ports to outside traders; and a few parchments involving contracts with other nations and supposed to contain concessions that might in certain contingencies become of value, but rather from their moral and political influence, as involving a recognition of the independence of America, than from any actual bonds of interest, political or commercial. Nor had the foreign relations of the States improved during the years from the treaty of peace in 1783, to the promulgation of the new constitution and the establishment of a central government. Great Britain recognized the independence of the new nation, but refused to treat with it politically or commercially under formal exchange of ministers or a commercial treaty. Mexico freed herself, and Brazil separated herself from Portugal. By 1822 European rule had been practically swept Off the American mainland, from Cape Horn to the bor ders of Canada, and, except for the empire of Dom Pedro in Brazil, the newly born nations had adopted the republican form Of government which the European monarchs despised. The spirit of unrest leaped eastward across the Atlantic. Revo lutions in Spain, Portugal, and Naples sought im piously and with constitutions to bind the hands of their kings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coming of the Peoples The Spaniards exploited America for gold, the French established trading-posts for furs, the English built homes. The gold was spent, the furs were worn, the homes remained. The United States to-day is English in its lan guage, most Of its law and many Of its customs. The Englishmen who came to the New World stayed and became Americans, the Spaniards and the French who came had ever their hearts in their home-lands and looked on America as an abiding-place, only. The English were the first true colonists. TO this there was but the one exception - the Spanish colony at St. Augustine, Florida.
