Book excerpt: This critical edition of "Unguarded Gates" includes three documents, an annotated edition of the poem in its two published states, a close reading of the poem, and a report on my examination of Aldrich's relationship with the Immigration Restriction League. These materials call into question the contention that Aldrich favored racial and ethnic restrictions on immigration. While this work cannot establish finally what Aldrich and, by implication, Jewett thought about the new nativism, they do suggest strongly that more study is necessary. In Jewett's case, for example, it would seem essential -- before reaching conclusions about her thinking on nativism and immigration -- to follow the lead of Jack Morgan and Louis A. Renza, in The Irish Stories of Sarah Orne Jewett (1996), by examining how she represents immigrants and immigration in her fiction.

Book excerpt: NAMED ONE OF THE “100 NOTABLE BOOKS OF THE YEAR” BY THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW From the widely celebrated New York Times bestselling author of Last Call—this “rigorously historical” (The Washington Post) and timely account of how the rise of eugenics helped America keep out “inferiors” in the 1920s is “a sobering, valuable contribution to discussions about immigration” (Booklist). A forgotten, dark chapter of American history with implications for the current day, The Guarded Gate tells the story of the scientists who argued that certain nationalities were inherently inferior, providing the intellectual justification for the harshest immigration law in American history. Brandished by the upper class Bostonians and New Yorkers—many of them progressives—who led the anti-immigration movement, the eugenic arguments helped keep hundreds of thousands of Jews, Italians, and other unwanted groups out of the US for more than forty years. Over five years in the writing, The Guarded Gate tells the complete story from its beginning in 1895, when Henry Cabot Lodge and other Boston Brahmins launched their anti-immigrant campaign. In 1921, Vice President Calvin Coolidge declared that “biological laws” had proven the inferiority of southern and eastern Europeans; the restrictive law was enacted three years later. In his trademark lively and authoritative style, Okrent brings to life the rich cast of characters from this time, including Lodge’s closest friend, Theodore Roosevelt; Charles Darwin’s first cousin, Francis Galton, the idiosyncratic polymath who gave life to eugenics; the fabulously wealthy and profoundly bigoted Madison Grant, founder of the Bronx Zoo, and his best friend, H. Fairfield Osborn, director of the American Museum of Natural History; Margaret Sanger, who saw eugenics as a sensible adjunct to her birth control campaign; and Maxwell Perkins, the celebrated editor of Hemingway and Fitzgerald. A work of history relevant for today, The Guarded Gate is “a masterful, sobering, thoughtful, and necessary book” that painstakingly connects the American eugenicists to the rise of Nazism, and shows how their beliefs found fertile soil in the minds of citizens and leaders both here and abroad.

Book excerpt: Introduction to the Constraints-Led Approach: Application in Football is a coaching resource football coaches can use to understand key theoretical components of the constraints-led approach. Sections discuss ecological dynamics, perception-action, degrees of freedom and complexity theory. Examples are provided within theoretical chapters to assist readers in their practical application. Over 30 designed practices using the constraints-led approach show readers how the theory translates into practice. These are ordered by the aim of the practice, from in possession, to defensive transition, to out of possession and attacking transition. Currently, there are no books on the market covering the constraints-led approach specific to football. The aim is to make this book accessible to football coaches without the necessity to focus solely on academic theory. Provides an overview on the constraints-led approach that will help users gain a basic understanding of the theory Covers fundamental knowledge for coaches who want to improve their practice Includes over 30 practice session plans with key theoretical concepts

Heroes and villains, human and alien take the reader on an exciting interstellar jaunt. The foundation for Moore's twenty eighth century technologies currently exists. Rik Hunter, a nanotech enhanced Sentinel of the Confederation, uncovers an interstellar plot to exterminate mankind and all its allies. Devious and genocidal, the duplicitous alien species turns the Confederation's own interstellar gate system into the ultimate weapon of mass destruction. The alien menace plans the complete destruction of six sentient races and hundreds of worlds. Rik discovers evidence of multiple genocides perpetrated by this newest member of the Confederation and precipitates an interstellar war. Like a marshal of the old west, Rik Hunter polices the frontier of mankind's expansion into the galaxy. Piracy, smuggling, drugs, alien monsters, invading aliens, and romance are all part of his story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vikings, pirates, heroes, rogues, and explorers . . . all have heard the siren call of the sea, and master storyteller Harold Lamb chronicled some of their most daring exploits. This single volume contains all of Lamb’s historical seafaring stories, drawn from rare and fragile pulp magazines. Never before collected, these short stories and novels are a treasure trove of adventure. Best known for his stirring tales of Cossacks and crusaders, Lamb was no stranger to swashbuckling, and his sea stories deliver it in buckets. Sail with John Paul Jones as he fights to save the crippled Russian fleet from the Turks, one eye always alert for the knives of his czarist rivals. Venture across the desert with a lone American on a desperate venture against the Barbary corsairs. Seek the Northeast Passage, beset by ice, storms, and traitors from within, at the side of explorer Ralph Thorne. Ride the whale road with the Vikings, plying their swords from Iceland to Byzantium. Introduced by best-selling author S. M. Stirling, this volume concludes with a rare behind-the-scenes look at Harold Lamb’s writing secrets, penned by the editor who made him famous.
