It considers the power allocation issues of two typical transmission scenarios, namely short-range transmission and medium-long range transmission. For the former scenario, an adaptive system is developed based on instantaneous channel state information. The primary focus is on cooperative dual-hop orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM).This book includes the decomposed fountain codes designed to enable reliable communications with higher energy efficiency. It covers the Doppler Effect, which improves packet transmission reliability for effective low-complexity mirror-mapping-based intercarrier interference cancellation schemes capable of suppressing the intercarrier interference power level. Designed for professionals and researchers in the field of underwater acoustic communications, this book is also suitable for advanced-level students in electrical engineering or computer science.

Book excerpt: UnderWater Acoustic Sensor Networks (UW-ASNs) are experiencing a rapid growth, due to their high relevance to commercial and military applications such as oceanographic data collection, pollution monitoring, offshore exploration, disaster prevention, and tactical surveillance. However, the design of efficient communication protocols for underwater sensor networks is still an open research problem due to the unique characteristics of the underwater acoustic communication channel such as limited bandwidth, high and variable propagation delays, and significant multipath and scattering. MIMO systems are able to exploit rich scattering and multipath fading to provide higher spectral efficiencies without increasing power and bandwidth. The objective of this research is to explore the capabilities of underwater MIMO links, and to leverage these from the perspective of higher layer protocols with a cross-layer design approach. First, a new medium access control protocol named UMIMO-MAC is proposed. UMIMO-MAC is designed to i) adaptively leverage the tradeoff between multiplexing and diversity gain according to channel conditions and application requirements, ii) select suitable transmit power to reduce energy consumption, and iii) efficiently exploit the UW channel, minimizing the impact of the long propagation delay on the channel utilization efficiency. To achieve the objectives above, UMIMO-MAC is based on a two-way handshake protocol. Multiple access by simultaneous and co-located transmissions is achieved by using different pseudo-orthogonal spreading codes. An algorithm is proposed that, in a cross-layer fashion, jointly selects optimal transmit power and transmission mode through the cooperation of transmitter and receiver to achieve the desired level of reliability and data rate according to application needs and channel condition. Second, distributed routing algorithms are introduced for delay-insensitive and delay-sensitive applications, with the objective of reducing the energy consumption by i) leveraging the tradeoff between multiplexing and diversity gain that characterizes MIMO links, and ii) allocating transmit power on suitable subcarriers according to channel conditions and application requirements. To achieve the objective above, each node jointly i) selects its next hop, ii) chooses a suitable transmission mode, and iii) assigns optimal transmit power on different subcarriers to achieve a target level of Quality of Service (QoS) in a cross-layer fashion. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that our proposed protocol is adaptive to the unique characteristics of the underwater acoustic communication channel, and achieves excellent performance through local cooperations between transmitter and receiver. Finally, we present our ongoing work on developing a reconfigurable underwater networking testbed based on the Teledyne Benthos Telesonar SM-75 modem. The testbed is designed with the objective of allowing researchers and developers to advance research activities in the field of underwater networking and communications through a flexible testbed platform. This platform allows playing, processing, and recording custom-defined acoustic waveforms to support reconfigurable physical layer experimentation with arbitrary transmission schemes.

Book excerpt: As electromagnetic waves do not propogate well underwater, acoustics plays a key role in underwater communication. Due to significant differences in the characteristics of electromagnetic and acoustic channels, networking protocols for underwater systems differ from those developed for wired and wireless radio networks. Various schemes have been proposed for one or many aspects of underwater networks. However, no widely accepted common framework exists for underwater acoustics to unify these proposed schemes into a functional underwater network. The availability of such a framework will enable easy integration of independently developed techniques and thus accelerate the pace of research in underwater acoustic networking. In order for a common framework to be successful, it needs to have a wide acceptance. To gain such an acceptance, a framework needs to take into account a wide variety of different constraints and requirements for various underwater applications. This requires inputs from various research groups and end users. To help define the use cases and a common framework fro underwater networking, a joint effort has been initiated between acoustic communication research groups at the Acoustic Research Laboratory (National University of Singapore), Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In this paper, we discuss the first draft of the framework specifications from this effort. We welcome feedback from the underwater acoustic research community and potential end users of underwater networking systems."

Book excerpt: Underwater wireless sensor networks are crucial in understanding certain phenomena that take place within our vast oceans. They can be used as an integral tool in countless environmental monitoring applications like understanding the growth and spread of algal blooms and monitoring the health of coral reefs. These networks often rely on acoustic communication, which poses a number of challenges for reliable data transmission. Three of these key challenges are high power consumption when transmitting, frequency selective fading, and high variability in the communication channel over time due to factors like multipath delay spread, doppler shift, and noise interference due to low SNRs. Current modems are traditionally configured for specific environments and must withstand the worst anticipated channel conditions. This tendency limits potential performance of the modem when the channel improves. This thesis introduces the design of a low cost underwater acoustic modem that can measure the underwater communication channel and adapt its bit rate and modulation scheme to maintain reliable data transmission while optimizing data rates and effectively minimizing power consumption.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research concerns the development of an adaptive receiver for underwater communication. In this type of wireless link, the radio channel is replaced by an underwater acoustic channel, which is strongly dependent on the physical properties of the ocean medium and its boundaries, the link geometry and the ambient noise. Traditional acoustic communications have involved a priori matching of the signaling parameters to the expected characteristics of the channel. To achieve more robust communications, as well as high quality of service, it is necessary to develop a type of adaptive receiver for the acoustic link. This process involves estimating the channel scattering function by processing the received Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) acoustic signal. This information is used by an innovative receiver introduced for usage in the underwater environment. The research also involves the development of a robust acquisition system for the acoustic communication signal. The major design goal is the receiver's robustness on a Doppler distorted fast varying multipath fading channel, for applications in multiuser environments. Another important design goal is low complexity in signal processing. The proposed receiver is able to adapt in the acoustic channel variations. Experimental results prove the effectiveness of the receiver.

Book excerpt: Time-varying multi path propagation in a shallow underwater environment causes intersymbol interference in high-speed underwater acoustic (UWA) communications. Combating this effect is considered to be the most challenging task requiring large adaptive filters and increasing the computational burden at the receiver end. This thesis presents results of an in- tank experiment and data analysis performed off-line to examine, evaluate, and compare the robustness of Time-Reversal Approach to Communications (TRAC) and the Matched Environment Signaling Scheme (MESS) in different conditions, such as noise, surface waves and range changes between the receiver and transmitter. Both methods examined can environmentally adapt the acoustic propagation effects of a UWA channel. The MESS method provides a communications solution with increased computational complexity at the receiver end but gives higher data rates and is more robust to the presence of noise, surface waves, and range changes than the TRAC method. On the other hand, the TRAC method manages to accomplish secure communications with low computational complexity at the receiver.
