Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic message of the Bible can be understood in any language. At the same time, many biblical texts are hard to understand because they don’t quite make sense when translated into English. Something is missing. Quite frequently, what readers miss has been lost in translation. Maybe there is a pun or wordplay in the original. Sometimes names like Adam, Eve, Cain, Abel, and Eden just seem like names to us but have meanings that are essential to the story. Many Hebrew words have multiple meanings, but the English translators have to just pick one (for example, the same Hebrew word can mean both hear and obey). Even more common are Hebrew words that have much wider meanings than their English translations. A few examples are the Hebrew words rendered as remember, covenant, walk, gates, love, cleanliness, holiness, glory, wisdom, and fear. The original language allows various parts to click together like well-constructed puzzle pieces. With Hebrew in mind, interpreters see new details they didn’t realize were missing before. They make new connections. They immerse themselves in scripture more fully. That’s where this book comes in. Learning a language is like learning a worldview. Those who learn biblical Hebrew can better understand not only what biblical authors wrote, but also how they thought. Unfortunately, those insights come only after years of study. This book is about getting right to the important, exciting insights. It’s an opportunity to be transformed by the renewing of our minds as we better understand how biblical authors used their language to express their experience of God and the world. If you are just beginning to study Hebrew and want the insights and motivation to continue or if you have no intention of learning biblical Hebrew but want to better understand the Bible, this book is for you!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hebrew Word-Book for Study and Class-Room: Comprising Common Hebrew Words Grouped by Roots, Meaning of These Words, Alphabetical List of Them Without Vowel Points, English List With References to Corresponding Hebrew, Making an English-Hebrew VocabularyIt ought to be stated that in some cases a doubtful deri vation has served as a basis for grouping words, not for the purpose of expressing an opinion as to the historical rela tion of the words to each other, but because of their possible connection, and the desirability of associating them in thought. It need hardly be said that the compiler is indebted to the lexicons and concordances for the material used in this vocabulary. He desires also to acknowledge his obligation to President W. R. Harper for his first special interest in the Hebrew language and for an appreciation of the value in study and class-room of good word-lists.If this little word-book shall fulfil the compiler's hopes by helping to a facility in the use of the Hebrew Bible, the labor involved in its preparation will be amply rewarded.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hebrew Vocabularies: Lists of the Most Frequently Occurring Hebrew Words It was proposed to include other material than that here given but the demand for the book has been so pressing, and the delay of publication has already been so great, that it is thought best to leave this additional material for a later edi tion. The principal lexicons, concordances and similar books have been used in making out these lists. In former editions my brother, Mr. Robert F. Harper, and in this edition my friend, Mr. A. S. Carrier, have rendered valuable aid in the work of collecting and arranging words. Great care has been taken to make the lists accurate but it is reasonable to suppose that omissions and errors will be found. Corrections will be thankfully received. Book Synopsis Lists of Words Occurring Frequently in the Hebrew Bible by : John D. W. Watts

This book was released on 2008-07-01 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The student of Hebrew need master a vocabulary of less than 800 words to have learned all the verbs occurring twenty-five times or more and all other words used more than fifty times in the Hebrew Old Testament. The lists that Dr. Watts has prepared are taken from W. R. Harper's Hebrew Vocabularies, which has been revised and corrected in comparison with Kohler-Baumgartner, Lexicon in Veteris Testamenti Libros. Where a verb occurs in only one stem, this is noted in the Hebrew list. When a verb has different meanings in different stems, this is noted in the English list. Nouns and adjectives from the same root are listed together so that the student may learn to distinguish them immediately. Words are arranged according to the frequency of their occurrence. The author has used these lists in mimeographed form for more than five years in teaching elementary Hebrew to theological students.
