Book excerpt: It is not recycling! It is not green rooftops! It is not even energy efficient buildings that can help us fight global warming; they only kick the can further down the road. They helped us put off solving the problem until later and that later is now. We can't slowdown global warming with green initiatives anymore. We have crossed that tipping point. Global warming is now feeding on itself! Every natural disaster, be it earthquake, landslide, forest fire, hurricane or a flood, adds gigatons of carbon to the atmosphere. More carbon means more warming and more destruction. This vicious cycle is now spinning on its own! It is Artificial Intelligence alone that can comprehend global warming in its entirety and offer amazing solutions to fight it. 'The Ugly Fight' a unique book puts together a comprehensive approach to accelerating the fight against global warming through the power of Artificial Intelligence, which can be our partner in this epic battle to reverse our carbon footprint. Is AI a double-edged sword? You bet! When we nurture AI to fight global warming, undoubtedly it will threaten our jobs. Now the challenge is not just to combat climate change but to survive the collateral damage. It is an ugly fight indeed. This book illustrates with real-world examples the possible ways to unleash AI on global warming and at the same time shelter the unemployed.

Book excerpt: It is considered by many to be the biggest upset in the history of boxing: James "Buster" Douglas knocked out then-undefeated and seemingly invincible Heavyweight Champion Mike Tyson in the tenth round in 1990. The Last Great Fight takes readers not only behind the scenes of this epic battle, but inside the lives of two men, their ambitions, their dreams, the downfall of one and the rise of another. Using his exclusive interviews with both Tyson and Douglas, family members, the referee, the cutmen, trainers and managers, commentators and HBO staff covering the fight in Tokyo, Layden has crafted a human drama played out on a large stage. This is a compelling tale of shattered dreams and, ultimately, redemption.

Book excerpt: “I’m the only person in the history of Virginia elected to statewide office with a Union card, two Purple Hearts, and three tattoos." Jim Webb—the bestselling author and now the celebrated, outspoken U.S. Senator from Virginia—presents a clear-eyed, hard-hitting plan of attack for putting government to work for the people, rather than special interests, and for restoring the country's standing around the world. Infused with the intelligence, force, and firebrand style that has earned Senator Jim Webb enormous national attention from his earlest days in office, A Time to Fight offers a thorough and provocative assessment of the thorniest issues Americans face today, along with cogent solutions drawn from Webb's lifetime of experience as a much-decorated Marine, a widely traveled, award-winning journalist and novelist, a highly placed member of the Reagan administration, a Senator with a son who fought as a Marine in Iraq and, perhaps most important, a proud scion of America's vast but frequently ignored working class. Webb exposes how America has entered a dangerous, unprecedented cycle of seemingly unsolvable unknowns. Our economic policies, particularly in this age of globalization, have produced widely divergent results leading to a country calcifying along class lines. Our demographic makeup has been altered dramatically and is set to keep on changing, through both legal and illegal immigration. Our editorialists and politicians talk about the American dream, and some urge us to bring democracy to the rest of the world. But more than two million Americans are now in prison, by far the highest incarceration rate in the so-called advanced world. Our foreign policy is confused, without clear direction; increasingly vulnerable to such largely unexamined long-term threats as China's emerging power while it has become bogged down in the never-ending struggles of the Middle East. As this drift toward societal regression has taken place, America's leadership has largely been paralyzed, unable or unwilling to stop the slide. "Where are the leaders?" Webb asks. "Has our political process become so compromised by powerful interest groups and the threat of character assassination that even the best among us will not dare to speak honestly about the solutions that might bring us back to common sense and fundamental fairness?" Through vivid personal narratives of the struggles members of his family faced, and citing the courageous actions of presidents ranging from Andrew Jackson to Teddy Roosevelt to Dwight Eisenhower, A Time to Fight provides specific, viable ideas for restoring fairness to our economic system, correcting the direction of national security efforts, ending America's military occupation of Iraq, and developing greater government accountability. Webb brings a fresh perspective to political dynamics that have shaped our country. His stirring, populist manifesto calls upon voters to make the choices that will change America for the better in this election season.

Book excerpt: Lifes Fight, Loves Might is a controversial true story about Lorna, a courageous determined Australian woman whose life was ravaged by the betrayal of her family, her employers, the Christian church, the judicial system and sanctioned abuse by the state and federal governments. Lorna stood alone against the world thats until she meets Rod, a surfie who sweeps her off her feet. Unfortunately, their fervent love also feels the smack of betrayal, which nearly destroys them both, but ultimately they stand united with trust, love and loyalty. When Rod enlists, Lorna becomes an excellent army wife. She learns how to compromise, because the army must come first. She becomes independent and resourceful while her soldier is away, supporting him all the way up the ranks to Warrant Office. Rods postings take Lorna and their two children to Sydney, Papua New Guinea, Canberra and Melbourne. Lorna finds each posting is fraught with its own kind of agony, with Papua New Guinea being the worst of all. She survives unbelievable traumas, which befall her and her family. Then she faces the failures of the Australian Defence Force and the Department of Veterans Affairs. To the Australian people these two systems appear to be functioning at an optimum for the serving members of the ADF, veterans and their families respectively, but it only appears that they are. Lorna also gives accounts of how the leadership within the Christian community believes it is above the law of the land, and how the judicial system aides the churchs betrayal of trust. In the end, Lornas resilience and strength wins through to overcome the impossible, leading her to write this inspiring book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, the military is one the most racially diverse institutions in the United States. But for many decades African American soldiers battled racial discrimination and segregation within its ranks. In the years after World War II, the integration of the armed forces was a touchstone in the homefront struggle for equality—though its importance is often overlooked in contemporary histories of the civil rights movement. Drawing on a wide array of sources, from press reports and newspapers to organizational and presidential archives, historian Christine Knauer recounts the conflicts surrounding black military service and the fight for integration. Let Us Fight as Free Men shows that, even after their service to the nation in World War II, it took the persistent efforts of black soldiers, as well as civilian activists and government policy changes, to integrate the military. In response to unjust treatment during and immediately after the war, African Americans pushed for integration on the strength of their service despite the oppressive limitations they faced on the front and at home. Pressured by civil rights activists such as A. Philip Randolph, President Harry S. Truman passed an executive order that called for equal treatment in the military. Even so, integration took place haltingly and was realized only after the political and strategic realities of the Korean War forced the Army to allow black soldiers to fight alongside their white comrades. While the war pushed the civil rights struggle beyond national boundaries, it also revealed the persistence of racial discrimination and exposed the limits of interracial solidarity. Let Us Fight as Free Men reveals the heated debates about the meaning of military service, manhood, and civil rights strategies within the African American community and the United States as a whole.

This book teaches you to look beyond what you and your partner fight about, and discover the core issues that undermine your relationship. In the midst of a disagreement, many couples ask themselves, “What are we really fighting about?” Sound familiar? As it turns out, breakups and divorce don’t happen because couples fight, they happen because of how couples fight. In this much-needed book, Judith and Bob Wright—two married counselors and coaches with over thirty years of experience helping couples learn how to fight well—present their tried-and-true methods for exploring the emotions that underlie many relationship fights. In this unique guide, you’ll learn how to use disagreements as an opportunity to deepen your understanding of your partner, bring more intimacy to the relationship, strengthen your bond, and really learn from the conflicts and tensions that occur between you. You’ll also learn how to navigate the fifteen most common fights couples have, including “the blame game,” “dueling over dollars,” “If you really loved me, you’d…,” “told-you-so’s,” and more. If you’re ready to start fighting for your love, rather than against it, this book will show you how.

Book excerpt: "From notable mixed martial artist and UFC fighter, Justin Wren, comes a personal account of faith, redemption, empowerment, and overwhelming love as one man sets out on an international mission to fight for those who can't fight for themselves. Justin Wren knows what it's like to feel like the world is against you. Like many kids, Justin was bullied as a child, but had a dream that kept him going. Fueled by the anger he felt toward his tormenters, Justin trained hard and propelled his dream of becoming a UFC fighter into reality. But the pain from his childhood didn't dissipate and Justin fell into a spiral of depression and addiction, leading him on a path toward destruction. After getting kicked out of his training community, his career was in shambles and he had nowhere else to go, so Justin attended a men's retreat, and it was there he found God. As Justin began piecing his life back together, he joined several international mission trips that opened his eyes and his heart to a world filled with suffering deep in the jungle of the Democratic Republic of Congo. There he came across the Mbuti Pygmy tribe, a group of people persecuted by neighboring tribes and forced into slavery. His encounter with the Pygmy tribe left him wondering who was there to help them and in that moment Justin stepped out of the ring and into a fight for the forgotten. From cage fighter to freedom fighter, Justin's story is a deeply personal memoir with a bigger message about a quest, justice, and the amazing things that can happen when we relinquish our lives to God"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does one effectively fight suicide bombers? What threat do they hold for Western society? How do people who love peace reconcile the need for war? Noted genocide expert Israel W. Charny addresses these questions in this highly personal description of suicide bombings and terror as the opening salvos of a Third World War. Charny first seeks to understand what makes suicide bombers tick, as well as the culture from which they emerge. Taking this understanding of what he calls human evil, he then proposes a hawkish campaign that ultimately emphasizes peace rather than irrational fear. By deeming suicide bombing and terrorism as necessary subjects in the study of psychology, Charny presents yet another weapon in the war against terrorism-a war that he believes will only escalate without drastic action. Ultimately, he calls for a worldwide campaign for life led by religious and secular leaders across the globe. He concludes the book with a vignette from Islamic culture that speaks nobly to furthering peace and life.

He respects this decision of his elders, though he has left his mother back home, and has never been able to meet her again. Growing up in India under the care of his uncle and the school authorities, who stand in for the parents of such refugee children, he is happy enough in India, his foster home. However, being the child of a freedom fighter, he never forgets his roots, and is very conscious of his Tibetan identity. My Name Is Tenzin, I Am Not Chinese is a first person narrative of this young Tibetan’s experiences as a college student in Chennai. Written in an easy conversational style, the story is rich with humor that cloaks the poignancy of an uprooted youth’s life in a place which is poles apart from his Himalayan homeland. The book also provides a well-researched insight into the academic opportunities in Chennai.
