Book excerpt: One of Australia's best loved writers, William McInnes makes us laugh, cry and grab life with both hands. Chris Andersen loves cricket. He may not be a legend like Bradman or Boonie, but in the Yarraville West Fourths, Chris Andersen is king. He is the captain, the coach, the manager and, thankfully, a player. They are getting hard to find, players. Every Saturday in summer Chris ropes together a motley team of men and a couple of boys to turn up in their cricket whites to try and win a game. Everyone has a different reason for being there: to hear the music from a nearby house, a block out the memories of another place, to be entertained, to please their dad, or just to have a go. And everyone has a story to tell. 'Marvellous reading' - Woman's Day 'Entertaining' - West Australian 'A book about a lot more than cricket... And even though you laugh out loud, you recognise something real' - The Age 'Big-hearted novel with character, leaving the reader with the urge to stand up and cheer' - Sunday Telegraph 'An affectionate, gentle and touching tribute to cricket and blokes who play it for love, not money' - Adelaide Advertiser

Book excerpt: SYNOPSIS Tim wants nothing more than to be a normal boy, with normal friends, normal family, and normal problems. However, Tim is anything but normal. He has a secret giftmany would call it a cursethat allows his conscious mind to slide to random places and times for exactly 38 minutes each day. But are his slides truly random? Or is someone, or something, in control? One moment, Tim may be safely sleeping in his own bed, and the next thing he knows, he is on the other side of the world, wandering the streets of China, or struggling to save lives of those on a doomed airline flight. This is the story of Tims life and his pursuit for answers. Why is he not bound to one time and place? Who, or what, is in control of his slides? What purpose in life can a boy like Tim find as he grows up into a man? And through it all, can he and his lifelong friend, Lexie, find their way to a complicated but enduring love when the universe seems set against them? Time Slider is a heroic tale of life, when life is not all that it seems.
Book Synopsis Synchronous data acquisition with wireless sensor networks by : Funck, Jürgen Helmut
Download or read book Synchronous data acquisition with wireless sensor networks written by Funck, Jürgen Helmut and published by Universitätsverlag der TU Berlin. This book was released on 2018-07-19 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are predicted to play a key role in future technological developments like the internet of things. Already they are beginning to be used in many applications not only in the scientific and industrial domains. One of the biggest challenges, when using WSN, is to fuse and evaluate data from different sensor nodes. Synchronizing the data acquisition of the nodes is a key enabling factor for this. So far research has been focused on synchronizing the clocks of the nodes, largely neglecting the implications for the actual measurement results. This thesis investigates the relation between synchronization accuracy and quality of measurement results. Two different classes of time synchronous data acquisition are investigated: event detection and waveform sampling. A model is developed that describes a WSN as a generic multi-channel data acquisition system, thus enabling direct comparison to other existing systems. With the help of this model it is shown, that synchronization accuracy should best be expressed as uncertainty of the acquired timing information. This way, not only the contribution of the synchronization to the overall measurement uncertainty can be assessed, but also the synchronization accuracy required for an application can be estimated. The insights from the uncertainty analysis are used to develop two distinct approaches to synchronous data acquisition: a proactive and a reactive one. It is shown that the reactive approach can also be used to efficiently implement synchronous angular sampling, i.e. data acquisition synchronous to the rotation of a machine's shaft. Furthermore, testing methods are suggested, that evaluate the synchronized data acquisition of an existing WSN as a whole. These methods can be applied to other data acquisition systems without changes, thus enabling direct comparisons. The practical realization of a WSN is described, on which the developed data acquisition methods have been implemented. All implementations were thoroughly tested in experiments, using the suggested testing methods. This way it was revealed, that a system's interrupt handling procedures may have a strong influence on the data acquisition. Furthermore, it was shown that the effective use of fixed-point arithmetic enables synchronous angular sampling in real-time during a streaming measurement. Finally, two application examples are used to illustrate the utility of the implemented data acquisition: the acoustic localization of two sensor nodes on a straight line and a simple order tracking at an induction motor test bench.
Book Synopsis King of the Bowery by : Richard F. Welch
Download or read book King of the Bowery written by Richard F. Welch and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2011-10-28 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: King of the Bowery is the first full-length biography of Timothy D. "Big Tim" Sullivan, the archetypal Tammany Hall leader who dominated New York City politics—and much of its social life—from 1890 to 1913. A poor Irish kid from the Five Points who rose through ambition, shrewdness, and charisma to become the most powerful single politician in New York, Sullivan was quick to perceive and embrace the shifting demographics of downtown New York, recruiting Jewish and Italian newcomers to his largely Irish machine to create one of the nation's first multiethnic political organizations. Though a master of the personal, paternalistic, and corrupt politics of the late nineteenth century, Sullivan paradoxically embraced a variety of progressive causes, especially labor and women's rights, anticipating many of the policies later pursued by his early acquaintances and sometimes antagonists Al Smith and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Drawing extensively on contemporary sources, King of the Bowery offers a rich, readable, and authoritative potrayal of Gotham on the cusp of the modern age, as refracted through the life of a man who exemplified much of it. "... a necessary book for anyone unsatisfied by the usual histories of Irish-American urban political machines. ... The Irish-American boss has rarely been awarded the careful appraisal of the kind that Welch ... gives Sullivan. ... But caveat lector: you don't have to be Irish American or a New Yorker or a Democrat to enjoy this book. All you have to be is interested in a well-told story that is also a first-rate work of history." — Peter Quinn, Commonweal
