Book excerpt: Part biography, part history, and all adventure, the life of Catherine Willis Murat leaps from the pages of “Twice a Princess” like a fantasy of Scheherezade. Niece of George Washington, niece of Napoleon Bonaparte, princess consort of the Kingdom of Naples, and a princess of France, this daughter of America remained true to her southern heritage as she blazed across the pages of history with her husband, Prince Achille Murat, nephew of Napoleon and son of his greatest cavalry commander. Together Prince Murat and his unlikely princess joined families, continents, and political powerhouses. In the epiphany of her final years she freed her slaves who freely and out of respect chose to remain with her until death. From rough and tumble frontier Florida to the throne rooms of Europe follow “Princess Kate” through a journey so astounding it scarcely seems real.

And now Fate has decreed Alexander as the next match to find true love, in spite of his apparent disbelief in tender emotions. If I can convince him forever is a promise worth making, is it too much to hope that the woman he vows to cherish will be me? Your lovelorn goddaughter, Princess Meredith

Anne of Brittany was only 12 when, in 1488, she became its Duchess, but already she was among the best-educated women of her era and she was determined to preserve the duchy’s independence. At 15 she averted takeover by France when she married its king, Charles VIII, and after he died she married his successor, Louis XII, becoming the only person ever twice crowned Queen of France. Foreword by Sylvia Louise Engdahl, the author’s daughter. Illustrated with 16th-century portraits. “The life of Anne of Brittany is traced in detail against a vivid background of court life during the Renaissance. . . . Useful to schools for its portrayal of the times, this has enough romance to appeal to girls.”—ALA Booklist

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fairy tales, often said to be ''timeless'' and fundamentally ''oral,'' have a long written history. However, argues Elizabeth Wanning Harries in this provocative book, a vital part of this history has fallen by the wayside. The short, subtly didactic fairy tales of Charles Perrault and the Grimms have determined our notions about what fairy tales should be like. Harries argues that alongside these ''compact'' tales there exists another, ''complex'' tradition: tales written in France by the conteuses (storytelling women) in the 1690s and the late-twentieth-century tales by women writers that derive in part from this centuries-old tradition. Grounded firmly in social history and set in lucid prose, Twice upon a Time refocuses the lens through which we look at fairy tales. The conteuses saw their tales as amusements for sophisticated adults in the salon, not for children. Self-referential, frequently parodic, and set in elaborate frames, their works often criticize the social expectations that determined the lives of women at the court of Louis XIV. After examining the evolution of the ''Anglo-American'' fairy tale and its place in this variegated history, Harries devotes the rest of her book to recent women writers--A. S. Byatt, Anne Sexton, Angela Carter, and Emma Donoghue among them--who have returned to fairy-tale motifs so as to challenge modern-day gender expectations. Late-twentieth-century tales, like the conteuses', force us to rethink our conception of fairy tales and of their history.

Book excerpt: Inspired by true events, Twice upon a Time begins during the aftermath of the trail of tears when our government treated honorable people as viruses to be exterminated. In this instance, Cherokee Native Americans: they had followed laws, they had their own alphabet, they had a government so compelling it was copied by the interlopers. Ms. Saxton describes struggles and love stories handed down by fragments and educated guess involving two of her ancestors, stunning Winter Flower and gorgeous John John. Of the two, only John John is accounted for in the published first census of new arrivals in Oklahoma in 1839 “Cherokee Roots” (Western Rolls). The true events within may act as a bridge between the quelling white man and victimized people of color as Saxton also shines a lamp onto formerly rarely-published facts of Martin Luther King’s 1960’s movement. Overcoming injustice, with God’s glorious guidance, brings the reader to new heights of resolution and inspiration.

Book excerpt: "At a time when each Society had its own medium of propogation of its researches ... in the form of Transactions, Proceedings, Journals, etc., a need was strongly felt for bringing out a journal devoted exclusively to the study and advancement of Indian culture in all its aspects. [This] encouraged Jas Burgess to launch the 'Indian antiquary' in 1872. The scope ... was in his own words 'as wide as possible' incorporating manners and customs, arts, mythology, feasts, festivals and rites, antiquities and the history of India ... Another laudable aim was to present the readers abstracts of the most recent researches of scholars in India and the West ... 'Indian antiquary' also dealt with local legends, folklore, proverbs, etc. In short 'Indian antiquary' was ...entirely devoted to the study of MAN - the Indian - in all spheres ...
