Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Twenty-Seventh: A Regimental History The dinner hour having arrived, the pickets unanimously conclude to set aside Uncle Sam's homely fare, and take advantage of the enlarged facilities Of entertainment af forded by the village. Accordingly they adjourn to one of the boarding-houses, kept by a man of secession pro clivities, whose principles, however, do not interfere with his untiring efforts to please. Such houses of re freshment, where a civilized meal could be Obtained, Sit uated as they were here and there along the picket-line, added much to the enjoyment of these brief excursions from camp. Our duties were not very onerous, requir ing the attention of each man two hours out of every six, and consisted in seeing that no one passed along the road, or appeared in the vicinity, without proper author ity. In good weather, the two days of picket duty, oc curring once a fortnight, were quite agreeable; but if stormy, they afforded good material for the grumbling fraternity. Book Synopsis Chancellorsville by : Gary W. Gallagher
Download or read book Chancellorsville written by Gary W. Gallagher and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 1996 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chancellorsville was a remarkable victory for Lee's troops, who were outnumbered two to one. The campaign had enormous psychological importance for both sides, who had met recently at Fredericksburg and would meet again at Gettysburg in just two months. But the victory, while stunning, came at an enormous cost: more than 13,000 Confederates became casualties, including Stonewall Jackson, who was wounded by friendly fire and died several days later. The topics covered in this volume include the influence of politics on the Union army, the importance of courage among officers, the impact of the war on children, and the state of battlefield medical care. Other essays illuminate the important but overlooked role of Confederate commander Jubal Early, reassess the professionalism of the Union cavalry, investigate the incident of friendly fire that took Stonewall Jackson's life, and analyze the military and political background of Confederate colonel Emory Best's court-martial on charges of abandoning his men.

Book Synopsis The Maps of Gettysburg by : Bradley M. Gottfried
Download or read book The Maps of Gettysburg written by Bradley M. Gottfried and published by Savas Beatie. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive collection of Civil War maps and battle plans that brought Union and Confederate forces to the largest battle ever fought on American soil. Thousands of books and articles have been written about Gettysburg—but the military operation itself remains one of the most complex and difficult to understand. Here, Bradley M. Gottfried gives readers a unique and thorough study of the campaign that decided the fate of a nation. Enriched with 144 detailed, full-page color maps comprising the entire campaign, The Maps of Gettysburg shows the action as it happened—down to the regimental and battery level, including the marches to and from the battlefield, and virtually every significant event in-between. Paired with each map is a fully detailed text describing the units, personalities, movements, and combat it depicts—including quotes from eyewitnesses—all of which bring the Gettysburg story to life. Perfect for the armchair historian or first-hand visitor to the hallowed ground, “no academic library can afford not to include The Maps of Gettysburg as part of their American Civil War Reference collections” (Midwest Book Review).
