Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inner Door Mrs. Chambers was beginning to accept him with a certain helpless sense of having done what she could to prevent it. Had Sylvia been plain, and she was not, had she been poor instead of having a hundred thousand a year, her guardian's wife would have embraced him as a benignant demigod. But the factory, potent in its profits, hung like a black diamond on the girl's white neck, and its mechanical marvels demanded recognition even at the altar. That Kenneth was the son of his father, spoke for much, but the heir of a broker, thought Mrs. Chambers, stood in line for a questionable legacy. She loathed manufacturing, but she was terrified at the stock market; and manufacturing, after all, did the trick. In her own domain Mrs. Chambers was called a relative woman, disclaim ing distinction and losing identity in her very domesticity. She seemed one of those who grow into a house and are moved about with the chairs and tables. Her husband loved her because she disturbed not his weary soul, and where she went peace went with her. Sylvia loved her because she had proffered to her first grief a large and passionless bosom. Society loved her because she moved through its particular pool without a ripple of either envy or expectation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interest among Victorian readers in classical literature from Asia has been greatly underestimated. The popularity of the Arabian Nights and The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is well documented. Yet this was also an era in which freethinkers consulted the Quran, in which schoolchildren were given abridgements of the Ramayana to read, in which names like 'Kalidasa' and 'Firdusi' were carved on the façades of public libraries, and in which women's book clubs discussed Japanese poetry. But for the most part, such readers were not consulting the specialist publications of scholarly orientalists. What then were the translations that catalysed these intercultural encounters? Based on a unique methodology marrying translation theory with empirical techniques developed by historians of reading, this book shines light for the first time on the numerous amateur translators or 'popularizers', who were responsible for making these texts accessible and disseminating them to the Victorian general readership. Asian Classics on the Victorian Bookshelf explains the process whereby popular translations were written, published, distributed to bookshops and libraries, and ultimately consumed by readers. It uses the working papers and correspondence of popularizers to demonstrate their techniques and motivations, while the responses of contemporary readers are traced through the pencil marginalia they left behind in dozens of original copies. In spite of their typically limited knowledge of source-languages, Asian Classics argues that popularizers produced versions more respectful of the complexity, cultural difference, and fundamental untranslatability of Asian texts than the professional orientalists whose work they were often adapting. The responses of their readers, likewise, frequently deviated from interpretive norms, and it is proposed that this combination of eccentric translators and unorthodox readers triggered 'flights of translation', whereby historical individuals can be seen to escape the hegemony of orientalist forms of knowledge.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moody's Great Sermons: Twenty-Four Discourses I remember a few years ago we put up a church in Chicago - down in the heart of the city, where the churches had been moved away, and left a large class of people. There was a Christian man there that helped me put the building up, and he was very anxious that people should believe that God was love. He was so afraid that I would not preach it enough that he had it put up back of the pulpit in gas jets, God is Love. He thought if I could not preach it into the hearts of the people he would try and burn it in. I remember one night, while I was preaching, a poor fellow was going by half under the influence of liquor. The door was ajar, and he looked in and saw that text. SIS agent James Mackay fears that this may already be happening when he realises the newly elected president's press secretary is a former communist radical with links to the KGB. When the witnesses who support his suspicions are systematically eliminated, MacKay must race against time to prove that the President-Elect is not his own man before Inauguration Day and avoid a national catastrophe. 'When I say Ted Allbeury knows where the bodies are buried I mean it literally.' - Len Deighton, author of The Ipcress File.
