Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Twentieth Century Union League Directory: A Compilation of the Efforts of the Colored People of Washington for Social Betterment This work was undertaken with the hope that its publication would stimulate the desire to Study, as well as Discuss, the Race Problem, and that like investigations would be made in other cities. It is only the strongest and most progressive few of any race who can be pioneers. The masses of all races are "Lead" to attempt only what they see persons of their own kind doing. If the Colored Race, in the first generation of Freedom has produced a number of successful men and women in any community, no better service to the race can be done at this dark hour, than to throw the light upon them. The real Leaders of the race are those who Lead in doing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt: ...hucksters, two; hackmen, two; laundry, one; pool room, one; printers, two; saloon, two; undertakers, four; one contracting bricklayer, and one general contractor and wholesale dealer in fertilizers... The business built up in South Washington by MR. LEWIS JEFFERSON is somewhat notable. He is engaged in many business enterprises--his chief business being to collect and ship manure and other fertilizers on out of town orders. This business nets him a handsome income. He also makes a specialty of furnishing fertilizers for city lawns, gardens, etc. Mr. Jefferson is also a large general contractor, isinterested in the blacksmith business of Jefferson and Elkins, and in the buying and selling of real estate. His chief place of business is 1901, 1st St., S. W. No small part of the credit for the progress the colored people of South Washington have made in business, is due to the efforts of Rev. W. J. Howard, pastor of Zion Baptist church, and to the efforts of his illustrious father before him. "Zion" is the largest church in that section, having a membership approximating 2,000. Mr. Howard frequently urges his people to look to "business" as one of the important means of race development. Mr. Howard fully comprehends the peculiar needs of his race in their efforts to better their condition, and his church under his wise and active leadership is a powerful centre for good, along many lines of endeavor. It being known to the compiler that Mr. Charles R. Douglass had investigated the subject of who was the first colored clerk in the Executive Departments at Washington, he was asked to state the facts. He wrote as follows: "David W. Wykoff, of Rochester, N. Y., whose father was a black man, and whose mother was a...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With The Row House in Washington, DC, the architectural historian and preservationist Alison Hoagland turns the lucid prose style and keen analytical skill that characterize all her scholarship to the subject of the Washington row house. Row houses have long been an important component of the housing stock of many major American cities, predominantly sheltering the middle classes comprising clerks, tradespeople, and artisans. In Washington, with its plethora of government workers, they are the dominant typology of the historical city. Hoagland identifies six principal row house types—two-room, L-shaped, three-room, English-basement, quadrant, and kitchen-forward—and documents their wide-ranging impact, as sources of income and statements of attainment as well as domiciles for nuclear families or boarders, homeowners or renters, long tenancy or short stays. Through restrictive covenants on some house sales, they also illustrate the pervasive racism that has haunted the city. This topical study demonstrates at once the distinctive character of the Washington row house and the many similarities it shares with row houses in other mid-Atlantic cities. In a broader sense, it also shows how urban dwellers responded to a challenging concatenation of spatial, regulatory, financial, and demographic limitations, providing a historical model for new, innovative designs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This oral history portrays the lives of African American women who migrated from the rural South to work as domestic servants in Washington, DC in the early decades of the twentieth century. In Living In, Living Out Elizabeth Clark-Lewis narrates the personal experiences of eighty-one women who worked for wealthy white families. These women describe how they encountered—but never accepted—the master-servant relationship, and recount their struggles to change their status from “live in” servants to daily paid workers who “lived out.” With candor and passion, the women interviewed tell of leaving their families and adjusting to city life “up North,” of being placed as live-in servants, and of the frustrations and indignities they endured as domestics. By networking on the job, at churches, and at penny savers clubs, they found ways to transform their unending servitude into an employer-employee relationship—gaining a new independence that could only be experienced by living outside of their employers' homes. Clark-Lewis points out that their perseverance and courage not only improved their own lot but also transformed work life for succeeding generations of African American women. A series of in-depth vignettes about the later years of these women bears poignant witness to their efforts to carve out lives of fulfillment and dignity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Local policy in the nation's capital has always influenced national politics. During Reconstruction, black Washingtonians were first to exercise their new franchise. But when congressmen abolished local governance in the 1870s, they set the precedent for southern disfranchisement. In the aftermath of this process, memories of voting and citizenship rights inspired a new generation of Washingtonians to restore local government in their city and lay the foundation for black equality across the nation. And women were at the forefront of this effort. Here Mary-Elizabeth B. Murphy tells the story of how African American women in D.C. transformed civil rights politics in their freedom struggles between 1920 and 1945. Even though no resident of the nation's capital could vote, black women seized on their conspicuous location to testify in Congress, lobby politicians, and stage protests to secure racial justice, both in Washington and across the nation. Women crafted a broad vision of citizenship rights that put economic justice, physical safety, and legal equality at the forefront of their political campaigns. Black women's civil rights tactics and victories in Washington, D.C., shaped the national postwar black freedom struggle in ways that still resonate today.
