Book excerpt: The most significant treatment of the language(s) spoken by the Siouan tribes of Virginia is the 1883 article "The Tutelo Tribe and Language" by Horatio Hale. Hale includes a substantial 279 word vocabulary, as well as numerous grammatical tables with explanations, mostly gathered from an elderly Tutelo called Nikonha. This edition includes all the Tutelo grammatical material printed by Hale, and organizes the vocabulary into bidirectional English-Tutelo and a new Tutelo-English section.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grammar and Dictionary of the Language of the Hidatsa (Minnetarees, Grosventres of the Missouri): With an Introductory Sketch of the TribeThe way in which agriculture is conducted is of the most primitive character, the ground is turned up with hoes, and five years ago the aboriginal hoe made from the shoulder blade of the buffalo was still largely 111 use. Nothing know they, of course, of the science of agriculture and year after year the unchanged seed of the same plant is stuck down, not only in the same piece of ground, but in the very same hole out of which the roots of last year's plant Were pulled. Add to the imperfect modes of cultivation the further dis advantages of a cold and dry climate, a short season, an inferior soil, the frequent incursions of hordes of grasshop pers, and the dangers from the attacks of inimical tribes, and it may readily be conjectured that the rewards of hus bandry are but poorly proportioned to the labor expended; and such is the case, their crops only partly aid in sustain ing them. Hunting, and the scanty annuities received from the government make up the balance of their meager subsistence. The village consists of a number of houses, built very closely together and without any attempt at regularity of position, the doors face in every possible direction, and there is so much uniformity in the appearance of the lodges that it is a very difficult matter to find your way among them.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The Southeastern Indian people found their voices in this work. They are alive and well—still on their land!”—Hiram F. Gregory, coauthor of The Historic Indian Tribes of Louisiana: From 1542 to the Present “This collection fills a major void in our understanding of recent southern history by offering a wide-ranging selection of southern Indians a chance to speak for themselves, unfiltered, as they strike at the heart of identity: Indian identity, southern identity, and, ultimately, American identity.”—Greg O’Brien, editor of Pre-removal Choctaw History: Exploring New Paths The history of Native Americans in the U.S. South is a turbulent one, rife with conflict and inequality. Since the arrival of Spanish conquistadors in the fifteenth century, Native peoples have struggled to maintain their land, cultures, and ways of life. In We Will Always Be Here, contemporary tribal leaders, educators, and activists speak about their own experiences fighting for Indian identity, self-determination, cultural survival, and community development. This valuable collection portrays the lives of today’s Southern Indians in their own words. Reflecting on such issues as poverty, education, racism, cultural preservation, and tribal sovereignty, the contributors to this volume offer a glimpse into the historical struggles of southern Native peoples, examine their present-day efforts, and share their hopes for the future. They also share examples of cultural practices that have either endured or been revitalized. In a country that still faces challenges to civil rights and misconceptions about Indian identity and tribal sovereignty, this timely book builds a deeper understanding of modern Native peoples within a region where they are often overlooked. Book excerpt: This is the only published bibliography devoted to the speech of the American Indians inhabiting the southeastern quadrant of the U.S. at the time of first European contact. It covers more than twenty-five languages from five language families (Algonquian, Caddoan, Iroquoian, Muskogean, Siouan), several genetically unaffiliated languages, and a trade language (Mobilian Jargon). The bibliography annotates over 1,900 published works, reviews, doctoral dissertations, and master's theses. A single index is organized by individual languages and by linguistic and related topics. The volume is intended for the use of scholars working in the core areas of linguistics, in related sociolinguistic disciplines, and in other aspects of cultural anthropology.
