Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2018 in the subject Communications - Mass Media, grade: 3, Bilgi University İstanbul (Communication), course: Modernization in Turkey, language: English, abstract: This study focuses on the national cinema in Turkey within cultural perspective or similar. It delves further into the perpetual efforts of Halit Refiğ to pave the way for acceptance of a culture-based national cinema, his achievements in persuading his countrymen to embrace culture-based cinema and the challenges he faced during his period as a film director, film critic and theoretician pushing forward for his standpoint in support for the matter. Common to the evolution of other numerous film art industries, the studio system in Turkey has seen a significant transformation, predominantly influenced by filmmakers, film critics, theoreticians and intellectuals. Enthusiastically and painstakingly advocating for a national cinema that embraces the Turkish cultural aesthetics, Halit Refiğ was one of the key players that would ultimately see the Turkish film industry remodel for the good of the future generation. He had to endure the massive and rapidly changing political storm that hit Turkey in the 1960s as well as take into consideration the aspect of cultural diversity apparent from the continuous mixing and merging of different cultures. During his time as a film director, Refiğ together with his team, known for the fight for a National Cinema Movement, faced awful dissent from their opponents, the Turkish Cinematheque Association (Erdogan). Undoubtedly, that was a tough period for Halit Refiğ.

Despite its prolific and popular nature, this national film industry has often been denigrated as imitative, simplistic, and underdeveloped. Taking up precisely thesecritiques, Cinema in Turkey provides a critical history of feature cinema in Turkey, considering how this cinema developed modes of communication reflective of both existing traditions and region-specific responses to modernization and nation-building.Focusing on both popular films and art cinema, this study deals with the history of cinema in Turkey, including not only its high point during the golden age of Yesilcam (as Turkey's popular film industry of the 1960s and 1970s is known), but also its early years and its current revival, the NewCinema of Turkey. This book not only provides the first comprehensive history of Turkish cinema in English, but also attempts to introduce a contemporary film-theoretical perspective to the examination of Turkish cinema, viewing it in a broader framework that goes beyond the canonical concerns ofexisting film histories and their art and auteur cinema related perspectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As in western cinema, cross-dressing is a recurrent theme in Turkish film. But what do these films, whose characters typically cross-dress in order to escape enemies or other threats, tell us about the modern history of the Turkish Republic? This book examines cross-dressing in Turkish films in the context of formative events in modern Turkish political history, arguing that this trope coincides with and is illustrative of trauma induced by Turkey's multiple coup d'etats, periods of authoritarianism, enforced secularism and 'modernization'. Burcu Dabak Ozdemir analyses five case study films wherein she reveals that cross-dressing characters are able to escape persecutors and surveillance - key instruments of oppression during Turkey's coups. She shows how cross-dressing in the films examined become a destabilising force, a form of implicit resistance against state power, both political and in terms of binaries of gender and identity, and a means to register moments of national trauma. The book historicises the concept of cross-dressing in modern Turkey by examining what the author argues is a formative trauma worked through in the films examined: the westernization policies of the Kemalist regime whose most immediate symbolic presence was worn - the enforced adoption of western dress by citizens. Of interest to scholars of gender, queer, film and trauma studies, the book will also appeal to students and scholars of contemporary Turkish culture and society.

Book excerpt: Films often act as a prism that refracts the issues facing a nation, and Turkish cinema in particular serves to encapsulate the cultural and social turmoil of modern-day Turkey. Acclaimed film scholar Gönül Dönmez-Colin examines here the way that national cinema reveals the Turkish quest for a modern identity. Marked by continually shifting ethnic demographics, politics, and geographic borders, Turkish society struggles to reconcile modern attitudes with traditional morals and centuries-old customs. Dönmez-Colin examines how contemporary Turkish filmmakers address this struggle in their cinematic works, positing that their films revolve around ideas of migration and exile, and give voice to previously subsumed “denied identities” such as that of the Kurds. Turkish Cinema also crucially examines how these films confront taboo subjects such as homosexuality, incest, and honor killings, issues that have only become viable subjects of discussion in the new generation of Turkish citizens. A deftly written and thought-provoking study, Turkish Cinema will be invaluable for scholars of Middle East studies and cinephiles alike.

Book excerpt: This volume presents varied approaches concerning the relation between cinema and politics which focus on policies, eras, countries, mainstream and art cinema productions, transnational examples, changing narratives and identities. Both cinema and politics have actors and directors for their scenes, and in this sense their discourses intermingle. The performances of the “actors/actresses” in both arenas attract particular attention. The actors, directors, and producers with ‘hyphenated/creolised/hybrid identities’ such as German-Turks, directors of Balkan cinema, or Italian filmmakers of Turkish origin give a wide and refreshing perspective to the discussion of Europe in the media. What these ‘mediated identities’ represent goes beyond the limits of the old Europe, towards the different sensitivity of the New Europe. Scholars and advanced students of Film Studies, European Studies, Identity Politics, Migration / Emigration and Gender Studies will find this volume of integral importance to their work.

However, women and their role in cinema is a vastly understudied topic that deals with various aspects of feminism and sexism. The function of women in the film industry has evolved over time and proven to be an interesting area of research regarding the transition from sexual icons to respected professionals. Feminism is a widely researched subject, yet its specific application within cinema is an area that has yet to be studied. International Perspectives on Feminism and Sexism in the Film Industry is an essential reference source that examines the representation of women in cinema and provides a feminist approach to various aspects of the film industry including labor, production, and the cultural impact of women in motion pictures. Featuring research on topics such as violence against women, feminist film theory, and psychoanalysis, this book is ideally designed for directors, industry professionals, writers, screenwriters, activists, professors, students, administrators, and researchers in fields that include film studies, gender studies, mass media, and communications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Film piracy began almost immediately after the birth of the film industry. Initially it was a within-the-industry phenomenon as studios stole from each other. As the industry grew and more money was involved, outsiders became more interested in piracy. Stolen material made its way offshore since detection was less likely. Hollywood's major film studios vigorously pursued pirates and had the situation fairly well under control by the middle 1970s--not eliminated but reduced to a low level--until videocassettes arrived. This work begins with a discussion of some of the earliest cases of piracy in vaudeville. It then considers how the problem continued to grow exacerbated by the lack of legal resource available to performers, and the ways film exhibitors cheated the film distributors and companies and the measures that the distributors and companies took to prevent piracy over the years. Also examined are the practices of American theater owners who tried to cheat Hollywood, especially through the practice known as bicycling--extra, unpaid for screenings of a legitimately held film--and altering paperwork to reduce the money owed to distributors on films screened on percentage contracts. Also examined, to a lesser degree, are Hollywood's own efforts to cheat, including the disregard of copyrights held by others.

Book excerpt: The volume looks at the relation between contemporary Turkish film and television discourses and religion, in relation to the traditions and rituals of Islam, the representation of Muslim women, and subsequent changes in narratives and characters. It employs differing approaches to the relationships between media and religion, concentrating on how religion has started to shape the politics of film in new cinema practices in Turkey. As such, the book represents a comprehensive resource on recent Turkish cinema and TV – a milestone at a time when numerous disciplines have shown an increasing interest in the emerging new Islamic popular culture. It will appeal to those who are interested in Turkey’s opinion about itself, scholars who work in film studies, media studies, religious studies, gender studies and the political sciences, as well as anyone with an interest in Middle Eastern studies and media.

Book excerpt: Out of the new sources for financing films that emerged in the post-1990 Turkish cinema, Eurimages is the only non-domestic, supra-national one wherein support decisions are taken by the representatives of various member states. Eurimages was established as a part of the framework of the Council of Europe in 1988 to foster co-operation amongst film professionals in the co-production and distribution of cinematographic works as well as to promote awareness and encourage the development of Europe's cultural identity and diversity. Considering the experience of the first twenty years of Turkey's membership of Eurimages, this research examines the contributions of a supranational cinema support fund - which demands a series of culturally sensitive criteria to be met - on a national cinema industry. In addition to the co-production, exhibition and distribution support provided by Eurimages, and its contribution to filmmaking practices, Turkish-initiative co-productions - those directed by Turkish filmmakers, and those whose themes are pertinent to Turkey - are analysed herein with regard to the 'nationalness' of their content and narrative styles. Eurimages practically has been a good source of financial support for Turkish filmmakers seeking to engage with the problematic aspects of Turkey's national identity or simply seeking to convey the contribution of components to Turkey's overall cultural identity. This study also reveals those representations of diversity with particular regard to ethnic, religious and gender identities through a close examination of Turkish-initiative co-productions that have been supported by the Fund.

Book excerpt: Culture is one of the most important elements for explaining individuals' behaviors within the social structure. It meets the various social needs of members of a society by directing how individuals must react to various events and how to act in specific circumstances. A planned and systematic process is required for disseminating this cultural accumulation as a policy, which is produced collectively by all members within their everyday life practices. The Handbook of Research on Examining Cultural Policies Through Digital Communication provides emerging research on this aspect of cultural policy, which is formed within the framework of this systematic process in a strategic manner and can be defined as various activities of the state intended for art, human sciences, and cultural inheritance. Creating such cultural policies involves the establishment of measures and organizations required for the development of each individual, providing economic and social facilities, all of which are actions intended for directing society. Featuring coverage on a broad range of topics such as long-distance education, digital citizenship, and public diplomacy, this book is ideally designed for academicians, researchers, advanced-level students, sociologists, international and national organizations, and government officials.
