The Tunisian Revolution is the only revolt of the Arab Spring that is widely considered to have 'succeeded'. In this book, Azmi Bishara's grapples with the specific political make-up of Tunisia, and how it determined the development and survival of the revolution. Popular interpretations of Bouazizi's self-immolation presented economic and political oppression by the Ben Ali regimes as the root causes of widespread social despair that triggered the Tunisian revolution. Yet as Julia Clancy-Smith points out, Tunisia's long history of organized political activism and protest movements suggests a far more complicated set of processes. Proposing a conceptual framework of "coastalization" vs. "interiorization," Clancy-Smith examines Tunisia's last two centuries and demonstrates how geographical and environmental and social factors also lie behind that country's modern political history. By drawing from political theory, philosophy, ethnography and readings of local street art, this book restores the radical significance of the political event as an instance of possible collective action. Using the 2011 Tunisian revolution as a starting point for a broader discussion, this book analyses the processes of Orientalisation of non-Western examples of collective action and critiquing the narrative frame of the ‘Arab Spring’. By focusing on the aspect of autonomous mobilities and transformations, occurred within a beyond the Tunisian space, Oana Pârvan is able answer key questions including, how moments of political rupture (such as revolutions) are interpreted by the wider public and how mobility across the Mediterranean rearticulates the distribution and recomposition of political theory categories such as class. She narrates how the Tunisian revolution can be inscribed into a long history of dispossession (colonial, regional, neoliberal) and resistance; and the culture and practices of the Tunisian revolutionaries have spread in the country and abroad (seen as a way to think beyond the methodological framework of the nation-state). This work builds on research fieldwork and the analysis of Tunisian street art (mostly of the Ahl Al Kahf collective), drawing from migration-centred ethnographic work in order to suggest a reconstruction of the event. By applying theoretical reflections inspired by continental philosophy, media theory and autonomy of migration theory, this work develops an event-based theoretical reflection able to contribute towards rethinking contemporary Orientalism, self-representation and political subjectivity.

This paper will examine the recent history of Tunisia leading up to the revolution. It will then examine realist, liberal and constructivist theory, as applied to the Tunisian revolution, and determine which theory best explains the events. Lastly, it will inform the kinds of policies we should adopt for similar revolutions in the future. The Tunisian Revolution had three phases: the decade leading up to the revolution, the twenty-five-day revolution that lead to the ousting of the president and the three-year period that followed, which resulted in a successful representative democracy that exists today. Competing theories seek to explain the causes and outcomes of the revolution; however, constructivist theory best describes the factors that lead up to and followed the revolution. The events of this revolution illustrate that economic and political factors that established the conditions in which technological advances empowered people to mobilize effectively, and ultimately led to a dramatic change in the government.This compilation includes a reproduction of the 2019 Worldwide Threat Assessment of the U.S. Intelligence Community.In January 2011, an unexpected revolution erupted in Tunisia and similar revolutions quickly spread to Egypt, Yemen, Bahrain, Libya and Syria; a period that has come to be known as the Arab Spring. It all began with the Jasmine revolution, named for the Tunisian official flower, in which angry protestors convinced the military to withdraw support for the President, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. After Ben Ali fled to Saudi Arabia, competing political coalitions negotiated the terms in which they formed an increasingly representative government. By October 2011, Tunisia had successfully elected a new president and in 2014, completed its second peaceful political transfer of power since the revolution. The grand strategist seeks to understand forces and factors that drive revolutions and influence their outcomes. A close examination of this period reveals the strategic factors that influenced the revolution and the political reforms that followed it. Realist, liberal and constructivist lenses all offer explanations for the Tunisian revolution. A comparison of these perspectives offers a tool to help us understand the relationship between polices and outcomes, which can be used to understand and possibly foresee future occurrences.
