Knowledge is an intangible quality of the cultural landscape and its history which can be lost in the blink of an eye if it is not preserved, commemorated and conserved for future generations. Through the investigation of Inclusive Design and the application of its principles, the narrative which is Tswaing, can be made accessible to all by revealing the concealed narrative of the place, tangible and intangible, through time. The afterthought or lack of design for disabled individuals can be seen in many projects. By ensuring accessibility is part of the design process from the onset of the project, valuable resources are not needlessly wasted later. As a result the cultural landscape and its secrets can be uncovered and shared with all.

Book excerpt: Currently, a site of fragmented ruins in a landscape, this dissertation attempts stand as a Gateway into the site and connect all the historical events fragmented over time. Approximately 40 km from Pretoria lays an impact crater argued to be one of the best-preserved impact craters in the world. This crater, Tswaing crater, is however not recognised as a heritage site. Though the crater has geological significance, the facilities on the site fail to meet the requirements to become a Geopark/Geosite. The aim of this dissertation is to design a visitors' centre for the Tswaing Crater Museum. The proposed intervention seeks to introduce a facility which can promote geoheritage, conservation and uplift the community through geotourism. The proposed visitors centre acts as an introduction to the landscape and investigates the relationship between, man, architecture and the natural environment. Furthermore, the design approach focuses on the conservation of the geological and environmental landscape, with the outcome being a sensitive response to the generators given by the context. Based on available research the design intervention focuses on the integration of the built form into the natural landscape. The proposed facility is situated at the foothills of the Tswaing crater rim, within the crater reserve, in a degraded vegetation zone. The resultant approach takes on a linear building typology, with a direct line of sight towards the crater.
