Book excerpt: Excerpt from Truth About Germany: Facts About the War RY to realize, every one of you, what we are going through! Only a few weeks ago all of us were peacefully following our several vocations. The peasant was gathering in this summer's plentiful crop, the factory hand was working with accustomed vigor. Not one human being among us dreamed of war. We are a nation that wishes to lead a quiet and industrious life. This need hardly be stated to you Americans. You, of all others, know the temper of the German who lives within your gates. Our love of peage is so strong that it is not regarded by us in the light of a virtue, we Simply know it to be an inborn and integral portion of ourselves. Since the foundation of the German Empire in the year 1871, we, living in the centre of Europe, have given an example of tranquillity and peace, never once seeking to profit by any momentary difficulties of our neighbors. Our commercial extension, our financial rise in the world, is far removed from any love of adventure, it is the fruit of painstaking and plodding labor. We are not credited with this temper, because we are insufficiently known. Our situation and our way of thinking are not easily grasped. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Life in Germany Germans often maintain that their country is more diverse than any other, and on that account more difficult to describe: a country Of many races and various rules held loosely together by language and more tightly of late years by the bond Of empire. But the truth probably is, that in our country we see and understand varieties, while in a foreign one we chiefly perceive what is unlike ourselves and common to the people we are Observing. For from the flux and welter Of qualities that form a modern nation certain traits survive peculiar to that nation: specialities Of feature, character, and habit, some seen at first sight, others only discovered after long and intimate acquaint ance. It is undoubtedly true that no one person can be at home in every corner Of the German Empire, or of any other empire. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Truth and a Matter of Fact In the last issue of Le Mouvement Pacifiste, published from time to time at Berne, there is an interesting revelation which has not, I think, been made current by the British Press, but which clearly ought to be. It will be remembered by many that at the very outbreak of the war there was published a German report to the effect that French military aviators had not only flown over Belgium but had thrown bombs on the railway near Karlsruhe and Nuremberg. The statement was, in fact, officially made to the French Government on August 3, 1914, by the German Ambassador at Paris as constituting the ground for the German declaration of war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German "Truth" And European Facts About the War It must not be supposed that we are satisfied of the existence of any francs-theme in Belgium, nor can we accept in its full extent the German View that, on pain of death, no man without a uniform may defend his own house or his own wife and children. We have thought it needless to enter on controvertible points. As to the charges of wanton cruelty towards Germans in Bel gian cities in the first days of war, we shall only say that, as made, they are too vague to be examined, and nothing has been heard of them in Europe so far as we know. If they were true, they would not justify or excuse retaliation in cold blood. All the world knows what has been reported from the smaller places captured and occupied by German soldiery. We hope, for the credit of humanity, that much of it will prove to be false or exaggerated. But, in face of the serious attitude of the Belgian Government, we cannot assume that all German hands are clean. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Truth About Germany: With Reports of 420 British Working Men I took out ten parties, consisting of 500 men, and each tour lasted 10 or 12 days, during which time the parties visited different industrial centres in Germany and Belgium. The delegates were drawn from all parts of England and \vales, and so far as political persuasions were concerned, 75 per cent. Were Radical and Socialist Free Traders. On their return from each tour, a Committee of the delegates was selected, who drew up a report which was signed in each case practically unanimously. The first party, consisting of 64 delegates. Was not asked to draw up a joint report, but send individual reports, which were published in a separate volume some time ago; therefore the reports now are from 9 delegations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Real Truth About Germ, Facts About the War The inevitableness, the idealism, and the blessing of war, as an indispensable and stimulating law of develop ment, must be repeatedly emphasized. The lessons of history thus confirm the view that wars which have been deliberately provoked by far-seeing statesmen have had the happiest results. Such de01510n ls rendered more easy by the con sideration that the prospects of success are always the greatest when the moment for declaring war can be settled to suit the political and military situation. Reflection thus shows not only that war is an unqualified necessity, but that it is justifiable from every point of View. If we sum up our arguments, we shall see that, from the most opposite aspects, the efforts directed towards the abolition of war must not only be termed foolish, but absolutely immoral, and must be stigmatized as unworthy of the human race. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Impressions of Germany I have not ventured this volume without a pur pose. After several years' residence in Germany, I returned home and was surprised to find how little people in, general knew of German life. A vague idea of beer-drinking students thick-headed emigrant peasants, metaphysics and philosophy no one can understand, with a cloud of pipe-smoke enveloping the whole, seemed tome the received impression of a people, who yearly have been pouring into our land, bringing with them their thrift and talent. That there be truth in the general conception no one can deny, but that all the sweet amenities of life spring up in its domestic relations, that there is a charm living in a country where every rood of land teems with poetry and historic lore, does not re quire me to tell. That the constancy of their affec tions and the goodness of their nature commands our respect, has so impressed me, that I have ventured to print my rambling thoughts. So many of my country-women are finding their way to Germany, perhaps a few remarks by one of their kind may prove useful. I do not pretend to convey anything but passing impressions, but such as they are, they may awaken in some a wish, as one of their own writers has beautifully expressed it: To lift the veil that shrouds this romantic land, or it may give some idea of common life as they will find it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Degenerate Germany It should, however, be borne in mind that statistics compiled by the officials of the German Government in matters likely to affect the nation's amour propre are given to the public in the mildest and most inoffensive form. For instance, in this volume the reader will see how unreliable and equivocal are the German police authorities on the subject of prostitution. They were asked, in different towns of the empire, what houses of ill-fame were known to them; and in many instances the chief of Police replied that there were no such houses existing in his town or city - a state ment which amounted to nothing but a deliberate and wilful un truth, as is hereinafter conclusively shown. In the matter of criminality a Swede, Dr. Sven Hedin, in the preface to his book entitled With the German Armies in the West (john Lane) makes this pronouncement I have a shrewd suspicion that criminal statistics generally will testify in favour of the Germanic peoples this in reference to what he calls isolated instances of offences and cruelty in an army of several million (german) men. To this superficial chronicler may be commended a perusal of the chapter headed Crime and the Criminal in this work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Truth and Facts: Facts Which Every American Should Know The purpose. Of this booklet is to enlighten the American people on conditions, not only in Germany, but also in the United States and England, and to acquaint them with German ideals, which are so grossly misunderstood in this country. There are many things which I left unsaid for some reason or other, but I venture to h0pe that this book will be read by all true Americans, and that they may glean from it valuable knowledge of facts. My main object in publishing this book is to warn the American people against the dangers menacing this country, and jeopardizing the existence of the United States of America as a free and independent country. My criticisms may sometimes appear severe, but I trust they will be accepted in the spirit in which they are offered. Few people have courage enough to come out in the open and tell the truth, as their positions in life do not permit them to do so. History shows that many men who came forward with the truth had to suffer martyrdom. I am ready to state my convictions frankly in the interest of the great cause, and to tell what others either would not say, or are debarred from saying. May this book pass from one American to another and thus contribute to strengthen the ideals of this country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Four Years in Germany I am writing what should have been the last chapter as the foreword of this series of articles, because I want to bring home to our people the gravity of the situation; because I want to tell them that the military and naval power of the German Empire is unbroken; that of the twelve million men whom the Kaiser has called to the colours but one million, five hundred thousand have been killed, five hundred thousand permanently disabled, not more than five hundred thousand are prisoners of war, and about five hundred thousand constitute the number of wounded or those on the sick list of each day, leaving at all times about nine million effectives under arms. I state these figures because Americans do not grasp either the magnitude or the importance of this war. Perhaps the statement that over five million prisoners of war are held in the various countries will bring home to Americans the enormous mass of men engaged. There have been no great losses in the German navy, and any losses of ships have been compensated for by the building of new ones.
