Book excerpt: Populations of brook trout in streams of Shenandoah National Park were reduced drastically early in the past decade by a succession of unusually severe droughts and floods. The drying of stream beds, predation, and scouring were principal factors in the loss of fish. The park was closed to fishing in 1954 and 1955 to protect survivors. The small numbers of survivors quickly repopulated the streams after drought conditions abated. The stocking of hatchery-reared fingerling trout in selected waters failed to augment the recovery of populations. Survival and growth of young, wild trout were especially good. Their redistribution through miles of previously dry streams was rapid. The park was opened again to fishing in 1956 under regulations which restrict the take but afford an increase in sporting opportunity. Two streams were placed under fishing-for-fun-only regulations in 1961. The welfare of the trout populations is dependent mostly on the weather cycle. Fish may be abundant in wet years but very scarce in dry ones. Thus, the stream must be managed as marginal for trout.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brook Trout of Great Smoky Mountains National Park Stocking of rainbow trout began soon after 1900 and became frequent and heavy after 1910 in every major stream in the Great Smoky Mountains Much of this stocking was done by logging companies The species has thrived and moved upstream and into tributary waters In some virgin wilderness areas of the Park, the rainbow invaded brook trout habitat and the native species became reduced in numbers and range (king. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trout Fishing Memories and Morals But I have decided that worthy handling of some of these interesting phenomena is beyond me, while others will receive adjustment at the hands of time and so do not call for special con sideration. Hence I add no appendix. The world, by the signs of the day, is turning, or being turned, upside down, and in a few years we may all be at the Antipodes of our former states, as old Sir Thomas Browne might have said. But it is some comfort to me that the real Anti podes are now very well furnished with trout. That being so, the figurative Antipodes will surely not be without them. The future, therefore, need not be wholly strange and alarming. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The South Country Trout Streams I am convinced from conversations I have had with people, who speak with full knowledge and experience, that the condition of some of our streams is a menace, not only to fish but to human life. From an angling, from an aesthetic, but most of all from a sanitary point of view it is right that we should preserve our streams from pollution other than what is absolutely unavoidable. My strong belief in this matter will, I hepe, be re garded as a good excuse for repeatedly referring to pollution in this little book. Book excerpt: For more than half a century, grizzly bears roamed free in the national parks without causing a human fatality. Then in 1967, on a single August night, two campers were fatally mauled by enraged bears -- thus signaling the beginning of the end for America's greatest remaining land carnivore. Night of the Grizzlies, Olsen's brilliant account of another sad chapter in America's vanishing frontier, traces the causes of that tragic night: the rangers' careless disregard of established safety precautions and persistent warnings by seasoned campers that some of the bears were acting "funny"; the comforting belief that the great bears were not really dangerous -- would attack only when provoked. The popular sport that summer was to lure the bears with spotlights and leftover scraps -- in hopes of providing the tourists with a show, a close look at the great "teddy bears." Everyone came, some of the younger campers even making bold enough to sleep right in the path of the grizzlies' known route of arrival. This modern "bearbaiting" could have but one tragic result…
