Book excerpt: This collection of legal documents affecting the Christian Church in the Roman Empire is the first its kind in any language. In time the monuments here translated cover the period from the foundation of the Church to the deposition of Romulus Augustulus, the last emperor in the West (476), and to the publication of the second (and only extant) edition of the Code of Justinian I, the most conspicuous champion of Caesaropapism in the East (534)—each terminus ad quem being an arbitrary, but a natural, limit. The character of the originals, which are mostly in either Greek or Latin, is strictly secular, that is, the documents emanate from the State’s officials, ordinarily the emperors, and thus expose the State’s attitude toward the Church. —From the Introduction

Apologetic . . . a systematic defense of the authenticity and authority of Christian truth. Issues . . . a point or matter, the decision of which is of special or public importance. When it comes to giving a reasoned defense of one's faith, just knowing definitions isn't enough. It helps to have reliable guidance through the critical issues of apologetics such as philosophical questions regarding the Christian faith or biblical reliability. Vital Apologetic Issues: Examining Reason and Revelation in Biblical Perspective draws upon the insights and study of numerous evangelical scholars and writers to address crucial questions in the field of Christian apologetics. Some of the chapters included are: ""The Nature and Origin of Evil"" by Robert Culver ""Biblical Naturalism and Modern Science"" by Henry M. Morris ""Ebla and Biblical Historical Inerrancy"" by Eugene H. Merrill ""Theological Problems with Theistic Evolution"" by David H. Lane Christian readers, church leaders, and pastors will appreciate the insight and guidance of Vital Apologetic Issues. About the Contributor(s): Dallas Theological Seminary

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: T.F. Torrance's Conflict and Agreement in the Church gathers together his most influential essays and articles on topics relating to ecumenism. Himself involved heavily in the ecumenical movement, he wrote that 'ours must be the task of learning together again how to confess, like the early Church, faith in Jesus Christ as Saviour and God in all its breadth and length and height and depth, and therefore in the overflowing love of God.' Out of this conviction grew a comprehensive doctrine of the Church 'in which our differences are lost sight of because they are destroyed from behind by a masterful faith in the Saviour of men.' In the first volume, Torrance presents a set of essays engaging theologically with different denominations, along with responses to particular problems facing the ecumenical project. In particular, writing after the third world conference on faith and order, he addresses the hopes and barriers it raised to closer ecumenical relations. Throughout, Torrance's acute awareness of contrasting theological principles establishes a firm basis for further progress, without obscuring the doctrinal and ecclesiological differences that remain. In the second volume, Torrance's thought on inter-denominational cooperation in light of the Church's mission is presented. He begins by suggesting that 'the lines of conflict and agreement in the Church coincide less and less with the frontiers of the historic communions'. This opens the door for greater union between those communion, but also exposes significant challenges to unity within them. Addressing the major debates on the sacraments of baptism and the Eucharist, along with the priesthood and biblical exegesis, Torrance proposes a constructive way forward sealed by 'reconciliation in the Body and Blood of Christ'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malcolm Barber's classic The Trial of the Templars recounts the dramatic demise of this elite military force in the fourteenth century. Having fought against Islam in the crusades in the East for nearly two centuries, in October 1307 the members of this respected Order were arrested on the order of Philip IV, King of France and charged with serious heresies, including homosexuality and the denial of Christ. Finding resonances between the fourteenth-century trial and contemporary events, Barber's classic account endeavours to tackle the unresolved controversies surrounding the consequences of the trial and includes discussions in the context of new work on the crusades, heresy, the papacy and the French monarchy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip Schaff's History of the Christian Church excels at providing an impressive and instructive historical treatment of the Christian church. This is Volume Two covering from 100 A.D. to 325 A.D. This volumous work begins with the early Church at its formative era. This volume and the previous will comprise the major individual and their writings, which shall comprise the first five (5) volumes of the Ante-Nicene Series. Schaff's treatment is comprehensive and in depth, discussing all the major and minor figures, time periods, and movements of the Church. One feature of the "History of the Christian Church", which readers will immediately notice is just how beautifully written it is, in particular when comparing other texts of a similar nature. Simply put, Schaff's prose is lively and engaging. Quite often, these works can be grueling and drudgery, yet this effort have been able to make it ""history written with heart and soul.""
