Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trial and Triumph of Faith Madam, should complain of these much-disputing and over-writing times, if I were not thought to be as deep in the fault as those whom I accuse: but the truth is, while we'endeavour to gain a grain-weight of truth, it is much if we lose not a talent-weight of goodness and Christian love. But, I am sure, though so much knowledge and light may conduce for our safe walking, in discerning the certain borders of di vine truths from every false way; and suppose that searching into questions of the time were a use ful and necessary evil only; yet the declining temper of the world's worst time, the old age of time, eternity now so near approaching, calleth for more necessary good things at our hands. It is unhappy, if, in the nick of the first breaking of the morning sky, the night-watch fall fast asleep, when he hath watched all the night. It is now near the morning-dawning of the resurrection. Oh, how blessed are we, if we shall care for our one necessary thing! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trials of the Church: Or, the Persecutors of Religion It is a considerable time since the thought of writing this work occurred to my mind. I do not know how the idea originated. It was not that I had acquired an extensive knowledge of the subject, and wished to communicate it to others. In fact I knew little or nothing about it at that date. I had not till then read anything on the sufferings of the martyrs. In a vague, general way, I was aware that they had suffered much, that they had been highly honored by religion, and had borne the most brilliant and convincing testimony to the divinity of the Christian religion. But beyond that, I had no definite ideas regarding their numbers, their endurance, their virtues. It was only when I began to examine the matter attentively that its importance and excellence became known to me. I then, for the first time, learned to appreciate the services rendered to religion by these admirable champions of truth. I saw and acknowledged the nobility and grandeur of their character. I saw that in order to be true children of God, modelled after the character of the Redeemer, the spirit, the heroism and self-sacrifice of the martyrs must adorn and ennoble our entire being. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trial of the Witnesses of the Resurrection of Jesus The company met at the time appointed: But it happened in this, as in like cases it often does, that some friends to some of the company, who were not of the party the first day, had got notice of the meeting; and the gentlemen who were to de bate the question, found they had a more nume rous audience than they expected or desired. He especially who was to maintain the evidence of the resurrection, began to excuse the necessity he was under of disappointing their expectation, alleging that he was not prepared; and he had persisted in excusing himself, but that the strangers who per ceived what the case was, offered to withdraw, which the gentleman would by no means consent to: They insisting to go, he said, he would much rath er submit himself to their candour, unprepared as he was, than be guilty of so much rudeness, as to force them to leave the company. Upon which one of the company smiling said, It happens lueki ly that our number is increased; when we were last together, we appointed a judge, but we quite forgot a jury, and now, I think, we are good men and true, sufficient to make one. This thought was pursued in several allusions to legal proceedings, which created some mirth, and had this good effect, that it dispersed the solemn air which the mutual compliments upon the difficulty before-mentioned had introduced, and restored the ease and good hu 3 mour natural to the conversation of gentlemen. The judge perceiving the disposition of the com pany, thought it a proper time to begin, and called out, Gentlemen of the jury, take your places; and immediately seated himself at the upper end of the table: The company sat round him, and the called upon the counsel for Woolston to begin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trial of Jesus In August last I happened to hear, almost immediately after its publication, of the present work on the trial of Jesus. Ever anxious to learn what Italian thinkers have to say in all matters of human interest, I hastened to acquire the book, and read it with avidity. It has long been my conviction that in the history of Jesus is indicated and revealed the history of all humanity. The history of The Man is the history of man. No age, no single historian can tell the last word of this unique story. Each generation wants its own Life of Jesus; for in each generation new, or partially new, human forces are shaping new phenomena of goodness and wickedness, of greatness and misery. Whatever new or formally new features may rise on the moral horizon of humanity, we may always be sure that it is within the Sphere of that Sun that for close on sixty generations has been the centre of our ethical and religious system. The depths and endless vistas in the Life of Jesus are such as to necessitate a study of His time from the most varied standpoints. Unfortunately for a true comprehension of Jesus as a purely historical phenomenon, let alone as the religious Fact and Impulse, the study of the New Testament has in the last seventy to eighty years fallen into the hands of the so-called "higher critics," in whose criticism there is nothing high, and in whose heights there is nothing critical. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trial of Jesus: From Jewish Sources Many of my readers are doubtless familiar with the fact that there are traditions current in Jewish history concerning the life and death of Jesus which differ somewhat from those handed down by the Christian Church. What will probably surprise them is the statement that, though these traditions do differ from the nar ratives of the New Testament, they do not in the least oppose or contradict, but, on the contrary, rather confirm and corroborate the accounts of the Apostles. In many cases these traditions throw new light on the events; show the true na ture and the undisclosed plans of the principal men of those days. They reveal to us the true character of those who played an important part in the great drama enacted at Jerusalem nineteen hundred years ago. They raise the curtain of obscurity from the stage of those days, and pre sent to our gaze adistinct and clear picture of the happenings at that epoch-making period. These Jewish traditions rather supplement the account of the Bible, and, if placed side by side with the gospel account, would give a new interpretation to those great events. The two explain each other, the one supplying what was omitted by the other. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Pulitzer Prize-winning history of the Scopes Trial and the battle over evolution and creation in America's schools In the summer of 1925, the sleepy hamlet of Dayton, Tennessee, became the setting for one of the twentieth century's most contentious courtroom dramas, pitting William Jennings Bryan and the anti-Darwinists against a teacher named John Scopes, represented by Clarence Darrow and the ACLU, in a famous debate over science, religion, and their place in public education. That trial marked the start of a battle that continues to this day-in cities and states throughout the country. Edward Larson's classic Summer for the Gods -- winner of the Pulitzer Prize in History -- is the single most authoritative account of this pivotal event. An afterword assesses the state of the battle between creationism and evolution, and points the way to how it might potentially be resolved.

For even if an inquiry of the'present kind could ever result in a final demonstration of Atheism, there might be much for its author to regret, but nothing for him to be ashamed of; and, by parity of reasoning, in whatever degree the result of such an inquiry is seen to have a tendency to negative the theistic theory, the author should not be ashamed candidly to acknowledge his conviction as to the degree of such tendency, provided only that his convic tion is an honest one, and that he is conscious of its having been reached by using his faculties with the utmost care of which he is capable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trial of Theism An origin of Nature is inconceivable, the existence of Nature is evident. The manifestations of Nature can be observed-the ultimate causes of this manifestations are yet untraced. The Students of a 'First Cause' have as yet announced no indisputable result. The Theological Alchemists have been at work in the Laboratories of the Churches for ages-they arc engaged in their incantations and compoundings still. Every seventh day the crucibles are held over the fires of a hundred thousand altars; but the Philosopher's Stone of Creation has not yet been produced. This is the statement of Atheism. It is questioned and confronted in these pages with the counter statements of Theism. The reader will soon comprehend this; all we beg of him is, not to confound Atheism with 'Secularism,' which is an entirely different question, requiring to be treated in a separate volume. It is not necessary to Secularism to say - 'God does not exist nor to question the alleged proofs of such existence. The sphere of Secularism is irrespective of Theism or Atheism, or the Bible. Its province is the ethics of Nature. It does not declare why Nature exists, or bow it exists. Nature is. Secularism commences with this ample, indisputable, and infinite fact of wonder, study, and progress. If anything written on the following pages give any Theist the impression that- his views, devoutly held, are treated with dogmatism or contempt, the writer retracts the offending phrases. Theological opinion is now so diversified, that he has long insisted on the propriety of classifying, in controversy, the schools of thought, and identifying the particular type of each person-so that any remarks applied to him alone, shall not be found 'at large' reflecting upon those to whom they were never intended to apply. If just cause of offence is found in this book, it will be through some inadvertent neglect of this rule.
