Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shade and Ornamental Trees of California While highways, to be sure, are of extreme importance to motorists, an importance which' can scarcely be overestimated, highways are not merely for motorists. Travelers from the East constantly comment upon a California phenomenon never seen in Eastern cities - the long strings of men and girls pouring out of our cities and towns on holidays, clad in hiking costumes and filing along the roadways - for the roads lead to the trails and the trails to the hills. I The work of our State Department of. Forestry in planting and decorating the highways assumes, therefore, more than a special or group interest. While such improvements increase the pleasure and contentment of the traveler and add large economic values to the regions traversed by the roads, the work serves an additional purpose in giving expression to the spirit of our people, their feeling for the out-of-doors - for the hills, valleys and mountain ranges of this state. For these roads will not merely carry the traffic load of trade, binding city to city, but ably planned and adorned they will be silvan threads worthy to join the wonderlands of California each to each and these in turn with the centers of population. In this manner such work will give a visible sign of the mental attitude and Spirit of the Californians. Willis Linn Jepson. University of California, June 18, 1921. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Occasional Papers of the California Academy of Sciences The pressing need of a popular manual of the trees of California is the reason for this little book. The aim has been to prepare a work, which, while giving all the information necessary for the identification of the different trees of our valleys and mountains, will yet be so brief and concise that the entire matter can be put into a book that can be carried into the field. Fuller information concerning any tree, for instance, the value or character of its wood, structural details of its flowers and fruits, notes concerning variations, and accounts specifying all the points of distribution, can readily be obtained from other books, which are to be found in the public libraries throughout the state. Years ago Dr. Albert Kellogg, one of the founders of the California Academy of Sciences, must have had a similar plan, for he left a great number of carefully executed drawings illustrating the different Californian trees and shrubs. It seems especially fitting that these illustrations should at last be used for the purpose for which they were designed, and as far as possible this has been done. Without the valuable assistance of Mr. Joseph A. Street, who not only photographed all these drawings but also made photographs of the actual specimens when there were no drawings, this book would be of much less value. I feel especially grateful to Mr. Street, as his work was a labor of love - love for his art as well as for the trees. In general these illustrations are about one-half the actual size. The needles are in twos; bthe bark is gray or brownish, somewhat soft, and full of resin. Woe to the thoughtless boy who cuts his initials in that temptingly soft bark. In a short time the Incision is dripping pitch, which will get on his hands and clothes, on those Of his fellow campers, and Of anyone who follows his party. The cones are seldom over 2 inches lo.ng The tree is at its best from to feet above sea level. The bushy little alpine pine known as Whitebark pine or dwaif 'which interests all who cross the high Sierra passes, has thin, silvery bark at first smooth and later fissured and checked, leaves in clusters Of five, and cones a deep purple when growing oii the tree, brown when dry, and fr om IV; to 3 inches long. While the trees are truly dwarfed into shapeless shrubs on the highest elevations where they occur, in more sheltered spots Of deep, rich soil they have been found 50 feet high and almost 2 feet In diameter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eucalyptus in California Since the introduction of the first species of Eucalyptus, the seeds of other species have been imported each year by seedsmen, nurserymen, and in many cases ranch owners, until at the present time there are growing in the State nearly one hundred species. The University of California. Has seventy named species growing on the Forestry Station grounds at. Santa Monica, Cal.; there are specimen trees Of nearly every species over ten years Of age, and bearing seed at the present time, while there are young trees Of all the promising lumber Eucalypts. From this large collection there can be selected species that will grow on nearly any soil in a frostless region, while there are a few that can endure temperature as low as 18° F. Without injury. There are a few Eucalypts that can stand extremes of temperature from 20° F. To 120° F and at different altitudes; but with these trees it is as with any other. There is one certain location best adapted to the greatest develop ment; it may be a situation near the coast in a foggy atmosphere, the river bottom lands, the inland valleys or in swamps. Care should be taken in selecting a species for any certain locality, that the conditions there are the ones which will bring the species in question to the highest point Of development. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Giant Sequoias of California High in California's Sierra Nevada stand nature's forest masterpieces remnants of once widespread forests that covered a large portion of the Northern Hemisphere. Today but a relatively few of the giant sequoias 1 remain to interpret the past and give promise to the future. Although these forest monarchs have created great interest, aroused much speculation, and resulted in many stories since their earliest discovery, they continue to be among the mysteries and wonders of nature. The human tongue, gifted as it is, has failed to describe adequately their towering majesty and solemn beauty. As individuals, and as members of a forest community, they stand supreme - the largest and perhaps the oldest living things on earth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apricot in California From the above table it is learned that Riverside County has the greatest total number of trees, but Santa Clara has the greatest number in bearing, Santa Clara County ranks second in total number of trees and Ventura third. Ventura also holds third place for the number of trees in bearing. By far the greatest increase in any one county in eleven years has been in Riverside County, which moved from eleventh place in 1909 to first place in 1920. While apricots grow best in the deep, moist valley soils, they are found in abundance along the foothills of all our mountain ranges where there is sufficient moisture to support growth. Although the apricot seems to do best in gravelly or sandy soils, it does well where there is a high percentage of clay, and even in stiff adobe. The apricot, on its own roots at least, will not tolerate a waterlogged soil, but on myrobalan root it is adapted to places where the prune might do well, but where the peach or cherry would not survive. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saving the Redwoods: An Account of the Movement During 1919 to Preserve the Redwoods of California These groves are stated generally to be about thirty-two in number and are much scattered and isolated in the northern part Of their range, while in the south they are larger and closer together. This distribution shows that the Big Tree is on the decline, the various groves having long Since lost touch with each other, while in the north the reproduction is very poor. They all grow in Spots sheltered by surrounding for ests and the slopes of the Sierras are more or less windless, but unless artificially protected in national parks they would soon be destroyed for their valuable lumber. They have suffered throughout the ages from ground fires. Their enormously thick bark, which is from one-half to two feet through. Is a great protection, and the tree lives on, although its heart has been burned out, SO long as this bark and its underlying cambium layer can reach the earth. If protected by human care the Big Tree has remarkable recuperative power, and many Of the trees in the Giant Forest show an accelerated growth owing to their immunity from fire even for a few decades. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Softwood Tree Volume Equations for Major California Species Although the size of our sample was more than adequate, the reader should be aware of some important data deficiencies. First, two - thirds of the sample was drawn from trees measured many years ago. While we recognized the danger of bias inherent in the use of old data, that risk seemed preferable to relying on a much smaller sample with a limited geographical distribution. Second, we were unable to find measured-tree data from the Coast Ranges or, more impor tant, for trees under inches in diameter breast high. In the case of California red fir, all our sample trees were over 14 inches. This lack of small-tree data posed a particular problem in developing cubic-foot equations, since volumes were needed for all trees inches and larger. We were forced to extrapolate, using comparisons of existing tables as a guide to reasonable ness. Finally, our sample data for lodgepole pine and incenscedar were limited-26 trees of the former species and 46 of the latter-and confined to the southern Sierra Nevada. In spite of these scanty data, we decided to develop volume equations for both species, as an alternative preferable to using equations developed for some other Species.
