Book Synopsis What's an American Doing Here? Reflections on Travel in the Third World by : Stanley C. Diamond
Download or read book What's an American Doing Here? Reflections on Travel in the Third World written by Stanley C. Diamond and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stan Diamond's adventurous travel to remote corners of the world provides inspiration to the prospective and seasoned traveler alike. As a life-long educator, his observations about the value and meaning of such travel are thoughtful and informative, while his encounters with all kinds of people in unusual places offer knowledge, humor, surprise and joy. Stan's memoir begins with his childhood thumbing through pictures in an old World Book Encyclopedia and continues through his development as an enthusiastic voyager to some of the least likely destinations imaginable. So what else is there to worry about beside disease and sanitation, running out of gas or unavailability of medical care! Well, maybe rockslides and landslides, storms and floods, frozen roads and crazy drivers, marauding bandits and slippery thieves, insurrections and civil wars, spewing volcanoes and other such precarious hazards one might stumble upon... Frankly, I do not have any good advice for the reader about such things. Just try to avoid them if you can. Stan Diamond spent most of his life teaching children, directing schools and writing about his educational ideas. In his retirement he transformed those skills to become a popular lecturer, consultant and author. He lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with his wife Beverly. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies in the Contract Laws of Asia provides an authoritative account of the contract law regimes of selected Asian jurisdictions, including the major centres of commerce where limited critical commentaries have been published in the English language. Each volume in the series aims to offer an insider's perspective into specific areas of contract law - remedies, formation, parties, contents, vitiating factors, change of circumstances, illegality, and public policy - and explores how these diverse jurisdictions address common problems encountered in contractual disputes. A concluding chapter draws out the convergences and divergences, and other themes. All the Asian jurisdictions examined have inherited or adopted the common law or civil law models of European legal systems. Scholars of legal transplant will find a mine of information on how received law has developed after the initial adaptation and transplant process, including the mechanisms of and influences affecting these developments. At the same time, many points of convergence emerge. These provide good starting points for regional harmonization projects. Volume II of this series deals with contract formation and contracts for the benefit of third parties in the laws of China, India, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, and Myanmar. Typically, each jurisdiction is covered in two chapters; the first deals with contract formation, while the second deals with contracts for the benefit of third parties.

Book Synopsis A Third Reich, As I See It by : Janosch Steuwer
Download or read book A Third Reich, As I See It written by Janosch Steuwer and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "With the beginning of the National Socialist dictatorship, Germany not only experienced a deep political turning point but the private life of Germans also changed fundamentally. The Nazi regime had far-reaching ideas about how the individual should think and act. In "A Third Reich, as I See It" Janosch Steuwer examines the private diaries of ordinary Germans written between 1933 and 1939 and shows how average citizens reacted to the challenges of National Socialism. Some felt the urge and desire to adapt to the political circumstances. Others felt compelled to do so. They all contributed to the realization of the vision of a homogeneous, conflict-free, and "racially pure" society. In a detailed manner and with a convincing sense of the bigger picture, Steuwer shows how the tense efforts of people to fit in, and at the same time to preserve existing opinions and self-conceptions, led to a close intertwining of the private and the political. "A Third Reich, as I See It" offers a surprisingly new look at how the ideological visions of National Socialism found their way into the everyday reality of Germans"--

Book Synopsis Transport Planning for Third World Cities (Routledge Revivals) by : Harry T. Dimitriou
Download or read book Transport Planning for Third World Cities (Routledge Revivals) written by Harry T. Dimitriou and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-26 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities within the developing world experience a form of urban development which is different to those in more industrialised countries. Rates of growth are usually much more dramatic, housing and transport are often provided informally, and institutional support for urban management is also much weaker. The crux of this book, first published in 1990, lies in the idea that urban transport planning cannot be viewed in isolation from this wider development context. Making special reference to a number of countries, including Brazil, India and Indonesia, chapters discuss problems of urban transport planning, deficiencies in the theory and practice of conventional transport planning, and the emerging alternatives in the countries under examination. This work addresses problems that are still of great concern to urban policy planners, professionals and academics, as well as students from the fields of development studies, urban geography and planning, architecture and civil engineering.
