Book excerpt: Thisvolumecontainspapersselectedforpresentationatthe6thIAPRWorkshop on Document Analysis Systems (DAS 2004) held during September 8–10, 2004 at the University of Florence, Italy. Several papers represent the state of the art in a broad range of “traditional” topics such as layout analysis, applications to graphics recognition, and handwritten documents. Other contributions address the description of complete working systems, which is one of the strengths of this workshop. Some papers extend the application domains to other media, like the processing of Internet documents. The peculiarity of this 6th workshop was the large number of papers related to digital libraries and to the processing of historical documents, a taste which frequently requires the analysis of color documents. A total of 17 papers are associated with these topics, whereas two yearsago (in DAS 2002) only a couple of papers dealt with these problems. In our view there are three main reasons for this new wave in the DAS community. From the scienti?c point of view, several research ?elds reached a thorough knowledge of techniques and problems that can be e?ectively solved, and this expertise can now be applied to new domains. Another incentive has been provided by several research projects funded by the EC and the NSF on topics related to digital libraries.

At the heart of the societal shift toward digitalisation is the call for transparency and the liberalisation of information and data. Yet, with the recent rise of concerns such as 'fake news', post-truth and misinformation, where the policy responses to all these phenomena has been a petition for even greater transparency, it becomes imperative to critically reflect on what this dominant idea means, whom it serves, and what the effects are of its power. In response, this book provides the first sustained critique of the concept of transparency in law and policy. It offers a concise overview of transparency in law and policy around the world, and critiques how this concept works discursively to delimit other forms of governance, other ways of knowing and other realities. Book excerpt: In many schools and higher education institutions it has become common practice to share assessment criteria with students. Sometimes it is required for accountability purposes, at other times criteria are used as a means to communicate expectations to students. However, the idea that explicit assessment criteria should be shared with students has been contested. On the one hand, research has shown that explicit criteria may positively affect student performance, reduce their anxiety, as well as support students’ use of self-regulated learning strategies. On the other hand, there are fears that explicit criteria may have a restraining influence on students’ learning, as well as limiting their autonomy and creativity. There are also indications of students becoming more performance oriented, as opposed to learning oriented, when being provided with explicit assessment criteria. Taken together, it is not fully understood under which circumstances it is productive for student learning to share explicit assessment criteria, and under which circumstances it is not. In particular, empirical research on the proposed negative effects of sharing criteria with learners is limited and most fears voiced in the literature are based on individual experiences and anecdotal evidence. In this book, we therefore bring different perspectives on transparency in assessment together, in order to further our understanding of how students are influenced by the use of explicit assessment criteria. A deeper understanding of the influence of explicit assessment criteria on students’ understanding of criteria, motivation, and learning is equally imperative for future research and educational practice, both of which need to go beyond individual opinions and convictions.

This raises questions relating to the naming strategies adopted and the consequences of the choice of particular strategies. These consequences are not restricted to English, because the English terms often need to be translated and are sometimes borrowed. This volume consists of an introduction and eight chapters. The first four chapters focus on the choice of naming strategy and the consequences for the transparency of the resulting names in English. These chapters address the international pharmaceutical nomenclature, the terminology of psychiatry and of middle-ear surgery, and the use of neoclassical word formation. The following four chapters concentrate on the issues of translation and borrowing evolving from the choice of names in English. They address translation into Spanish, Slovak, Polish and Turkish.
