Book excerpt: In Kincraft Todne Thomas explores the internal dynamics of community life among black evangelicals, who are often overshadowed by white evangelicals and the common equation of the “Black Church” with an Afro-Protestant mainline. Drawing on fieldwork in an Afro-Caribbean and African American church association in Atlanta, Thomas locates black evangelicals at the center of their own religious story, presenting their determined spiritual relatedness as a form of insurgency. She outlines how church members cocreate themselves as spiritual kin through what she calls kincraft—the construction of one another as brothers and sisters in Christ. Kincraft, which Thomas traces back to the diasporic histories and migration experiences of church members, reflects black evangelicals' understanding of Christian familial connection as transcending racial, ethnic, and denominational boundaries in ways that go beyond the patriarchal nuclear family. Church members also use their spiritual relationships to navigate racial and ethnic discrimination within the majority-white evangelical movement. By charting kincraft's functions and significance, Thomas demonstrates the ways in which black evangelical social life is more varied and multidimensional than standard narratives of evangelicalism would otherwise suggest.
Book Synopsis She Has Landed Many a Thousand by : Audrey Brown
Download or read book She Has Landed Many a Thousand written by Audrey Brown and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-08-22 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes and attempts to explain the significance of women in roles of ritual authority as observed in Afro-Baptist rural folk church communities of North Central Florida beginning in 1980 and last observed in 2007. It advances intra cultural comparisons of rural Floridian folk Afro-Baptists and other Afro-Baptists in the North and South during the same time period. Gender-defined roles in Floridian Afro-Baptist churches and families emphasize matrifocal social organization, kinship ties, and the valorization of motherhood complemented by male corporate leadership. This book examines the transmission by African Americans, within their religion, of selected traditional African beliefs and practices that at once reflect and shape contemporary social reality to be harmonious with their core cultural values. Following Clifford Geertz's model of the dual nature of religious patterns, which simultaneously explain and shape reality, this book argues that Afro-Baptist women's church roles in Florida reflect and transmit African-derived cultural values and social forms that are materially significant to their day-to-day family life. Ethnohistorical and ethnographic data are presented that support this argument. The search for African continuities and transformations has significance in contemporary American society, which extends beyond the purely academic considerations of a few scholars of African American studies and Anthropology. Political, social and economic evidence of deeply ingrained prejudicial social attitudes based upon racial and class distinctions persist in our society threatening national cohesiveness and the democratic ideal. Understanding the sociocultural patterns of diverse groups in America as the unique expression of their cultural heritage is a sine qua non to achievement of a true democracy that embraces the concepts of cultural diversity and cultural pluralism as strengths that promote the maintenance of an open society.

Download or read book Children’s Spirituality, Second Edition written by Kevin E. Lawson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-06-13 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Society of Children's Spirituality: Christian Perspectives launched in 2003 with its first conference held at Concordia University Chicago, in River Forest, Illinois. An earlier edition of this book, composed of chapters based on presentations from that conference, was published in 2004. In 2018 a decision was made to revise this book from the inaugural conference, updating some chapters and providing a new perspective on the ongoing work of the organization, now called the Children's Spirituality Summit. For example, given the advances in what we are learning from brain research, a chapter on this topic has been extensively updated. What this revised volume provides is a collection of chapters offering theological perspectives, social science research, and insights on ministry practice about the spiritual lives of children: how they relate to God, how this relationship grows, and what helps in promoting the spiritual formation and vitality of children in the home, church, and school This book offers twenty-three chapters by professors, graduate students, social science researchers, and ministry leaders from different denominational traditions addressing a wide range of issues in theory, research, and ministry practice with children. This second edition offers much to learn from, stimulate your thinking, and improve your practice.
Download or read book Queen Mothers written by Rhonda Jeffries and published by IAP. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black women’s experiences functioning as mothers, teachers and leaders are confounding and complex. Queen Mothers from Ghanaian tradition are revered as the leaders of their matrilineal families and the teachers of the high chiefs (Müller, 2013; Stoeltje, 1997). Conversely, the influence of the British Queen Mother on Black women in the Americas translates as a powerless title of (dis)courtesy. Characterized as a deviant figure by colonialists, the Black Queen Mother’s role as disruptive agent was created by White domination of Black life (Masenya, 2014) and this branding persists among contemporary perceptions of Black women who function as the mother, teacher, or leader figure in various spaces. Nevertheless, Black women as cultural anomalies were suitable to mother others for centuries in their roles as chattel and domestic servants in the United States. Dill (2014), Lawson (2000), Lewis (1977) and Rodriguez (2016) provide explorations of the devaluation of Black women in roles of power with these effects wide-ranging from economic and family security, professional and business development, healthcare maintenance, political representation, spiritual enlightenment and educational achievement. This text interrogates contexts where Black women function as Queen Mothers and contests the trivialization of their manifold contributions. The contributed chapters explore: The myriad experiences of Black women mothering, teaching and leading their children, families and communities; how spirituality has influenced the leadership styles of Black women as mothers and teachers; and how Black women are uniquely positioned to mother, teach, and lead in personal and professional spaces.
