This book was released on 1971 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper contains an empirical application of the translog production function proposed by Christensen, Jorgenson, and Lau. The application is a study of substitution possibilities among equipment, structures, and labor in U.S. manufacturing 1929-1968. Since there have been few studies of substitution possibilities with more than two factor inputs, considerable attention is given to estimating several related elasticity of substitution concepts. Some new theorems relating separable production specifications to restrictions on the Allen partial elasticities of substitution are presented. The functional form proposed by K. Sato is shown to be less general than the translog function, but it is found to adequately represent substitution possibilities for U.S. manufacturing. The CES, Uzawa, and Cobb-Douglas forms are more restrictive than the Sato form. They are found not to be sufficiently flexible to be useful for this application. (Author).

Book Synopsis Specification and Estimation of Multiple-Output Production Functions by : G. Hasenkamp

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is intended as a contribution to applied work in production theory by treating: a) The measurement problems involved whenever several outputs are jointly produced, and b) The (possible) econometric framework for estimating production function parameters whenever (relative) prices vary sufficiently over the observations. Thus, the "pure" theory of production, and the theory of non-linear regression is not treated in sufficient detail: for these topics we refer to the available literature~ for a comprehensive list of references we refer to Uebe (1975). Some years ago, papers by L. J. Lau and W. E. Diewert initiated my interest in duality within production theory, and then I started to appreciate R. W. Shephard's fundamental contribution to this topic. This monograph is a (minor) revision of a Ph. D. dissertation submitted to the Department of Economics, The University of Wisconsin, Madison, in August 1973. The Graduate School and the Social Systems Research Institute provided funds for the reported computer work, Lawrence R. Klein and Laurits R. Christensen provided data, and as a Graduate Student I received financial support in form of an University Fellowship~ all this is very much appreciated. With some nostalgia I think back to the enjoyable period of learning during the preparation of my diFosertation~ I appreciate the spirit within the department, and the guidance of my committee Arthur S. Goldberger, Dennis J. Aigner, and Laurits R. Christensen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This Handbook is a stellar compilation of up-to-date knowledge about the important topics in transport economics. Authors include the very best in the field, and they cover the most important topics for today's research and policy applications. Individual chapters contain sound, readable, well referenced explanations of each topic's history and current status. I cannot think of a better place to start for anyone wanting to become current in the field or in any of its parts.' – Kenneth Small, University of California-Irvine, US Bringing together insights and perspectives from close to 70 of the world's leading experts in the field, this timely Handbook provides an up-to-date guide to the most recent and state-of-the-art advances in transport economics. The comprehensive coverage includes topics such as the relationship between transport and the spatial economy, recent advances in travel demand analysis, the external costs of transport, investment appraisal, pricing, equity issues, competition and regulation, the role of public–private partnerships and the development of policy in local bus services, rail, air and maritime transport. This Handbook is designed both for use on postgraduate and advanced undergraduate courses and as a reference for anyone working in the field. It also complements the textbook Principles of Transport Economics.
Book Synopsis Productivity and U.S. Economic Growth by : Dale Jorgenson
Download or read book Productivity and U.S. Economic Growth written by Dale Jorgenson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-01-26 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1948 and 1979, economic activity in the United States increased almost twice as much as over the entire preceding course of American history. The traditional explanation of this remarkable development emphasizes productivity growth. In the most sophisticated study to date of the factors currently affecting economic growth, the authors of this book show that capital formation is far more important, with the growth of labor resources and productivity a distant second. Their conclusions rest on a far more detailed empirical base than any ever assembled in studies of economic growth. For example, the authors distinguish among 81,600 types of labor input – broken down by age, sex, education, occupation, and industry of employment. Similarly, they disaggregate capital by industry, class of asset, and tax treatment. Their analysis of economic growth is from the ``bottom up'' rather than the ``top down'' approach used in earlier work. The new findings imply that efforts to revive U.S. economic growth must focus on increased supplies of capital and labor inputs. This is the key to more rapid growth and international competition. One of the most important features of the book is the way in which it successfully integrates the theory of producer behavior with the indexing and measurement of production growth. The authors present startling new findings showing that less than one-fourth of overall growth is attributable to advances in productivity.
