Book excerpt: Spectroscopy and radiative transfer are rapidly growing fields within atmospheric and planetary science with implications for weather, climate, biogeochemical cycles, air quality on Earth, as well as the physics and evolution of planetary atmospheres in our solar system and beyond. Remote sensing and modeling atmospheric composition of the Earth, of other planets in our solar system, or of planets orbiting other stars require detailed knowledge of how radiation and matter interact in planetary atmospheres. This includes knowledge of how stellar or thermal radiation propagates through atmospheres, how that propagation affects radiative forcing of climate, how atmospheric pollutants and greenhouse gases produce unique spectroscopic signatures, how the properties of atmospheres may be quantitatively measured, and how those measurements relate to physical properties. This book provides this fundamental knowledge to a depth that will leave a student with the background to become capable of performing quantitative research on atmospheres. The book is intended for graduate students or for advanced undergraduates. It spans across principles through applications, with sufficient background for students without prior experience in either spectroscopy or radiative transfer. Courses based on this book are intended to be accompanied by the development of increasing sophisticated atmospheric and spectroscopic modeling capability (ideally, the student develops a computer model for simulation of atmospheric spectra from microwave through ultraviolet).

Book excerpt: Developments in three-dimensional cloud radiation over the past few decades are assessed and distilled into this contributed volume. Chapters are authored by subject-matter experts who address a broad audience of graduate students, researchers, and anyone interested in cloud-radiation processes in the solar and infrared spectral regions. After two introductory chapters and a section on the fundamental physics and computational techniques, the volume extensively treats two main application areas: the impact of clouds on the Earth's radiation budget, which is an essential aspect of climate modeling; and remote observation of clouds, especially with the advanced sensors on current and future satellite missions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Second Edition of An Introduction to Atmospheric Radiation has been extensively revised to address the fundamental study and quantitative measurement of the interactions of solar and terrestrial radiation with molecules, aerosols, and cloud particles in planetary atmospheres. It contains 70% new material, much of it stemming from the investigation of the atmospheric greenhouse effects of external radiative perturbations in climate systems, and the development of methodologies for inferring atmospheric and surface parameters by means of remote sensing. Liou's comprehensive treatment of the fundamentals of atmospheric radiation was developed for students, academics, and researchers in atmospheric sciences, remote sensing, and climate modeling. - Balanced treatment of fundamentals and applications - Includes over 170 illustrations to complement the concise description of each subject - Numerous examples and hands-on exercises at the end of each chapter

This book was released on 1978 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflection, transmission and absorption of solar radiation by 4 cloud types (low, middle, high and stratus clouds) are computed as functions of the solar zenith angle and cloud liquid water/ice content; and reflection, transmission and emission of infrared radiation by cirrus clouds are calculated as functions of cloud ice content. The plane-parallel radiative transfer program employed is based on the discrete-ordinate method with applications to inhomogeneous atmospheres covering the entire solar and infrared spectrums and taking into account the gaseous absorption in scattering atmospheres. Effects of surface reflectivity on the solar radiative properties of clouds are parameterized in terms of the water vapor absorptivity below the cloud, ground reflection and average cloud reflection. The parameterized empirical-theoretical functions for the solar and infrared radiative properties of clouds are used in a global radiation budget model. The resulting radiation balance of the earth-atmosphere system matched satellite observations of planetary albedo, absorption of solar radiation, and upwelling infrared radiation more closely than did earlier computed models. The planetary albedo was calculated to be 0.31.
