Book excerpt: Enemy of the King 1780, South Carolina: While Loyalist Meriwether Steele recovers from illness in the stately home of her beloved guardian, Jeremiah Jordan, she senses the haunting presence of his late wife. When she learns that Jeremiah is a Patriot spy and shoots Captain Vaughan, the British officer sent to arrest him, she is caught up on a wild ride into Carolina back country, pursued both by the impassioned captain and the vindictive ghost. Will she remain loyal to her king and Tory twin brother or risk a traitor's death fighting for Jeremiah? If Captain Vaughan snatches her away, he won't give her a choice. Traitor's Legacy 1781. On opposite sides of the War of Independence, British Captain Jacob Vaughan and Claire Monroe find themselves thrust together by chance and expediency. Captain Vaughan comes to a stately North Carolina manor to catch a spy. Instead, he finds himself in bedlam: the head of the household is an old man ravaged by madness, the one sane male of the family is the very man he is hunting, and the household is overseen by his beguiling sister Claire. Torn between duty, love, and allegiances, yearning desperately for peace, will Captain Vaughan and Claire Monroe forge a peace of their own against the vagaries of war and the betrayal of false friends? Traitor's Curse Halifax, North Carolina, 1783. Captain Stuart Monroe returns home from the Revolutionary War to find Thornton Hall threatened by a peacetime foe: debt. He knows the location of a treasure amassed to pay for the capture of Benedict Arnold that would restore his manor to its former glory. The catch, it's hidden in the graveyard, and coveted by old enemies. Hettie Fairfax inherited the Sight from her Cherokee ancestors, and her otherworldly visitors warn her, and Stuart, away from the buried treasure. Half-dead from fever, she delivers a message: the treasure is cursed. But will he believe a girl half out of her mind with illness? Even when a very real enemy attempts to poison her? Stuart soon wants to marry Hettie, but she fears her "odd ways" will blemish his reputation. The spirits have their own agenda, however, and the battle against darkness tests everything the couple holds dear, including their love for each other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "...does he know who I am?" "He knows nothing of you, my lord. He believes my cousin, Master Chuonn, is the head of the snake about to strike." The assassin laughed without mirth. "But in truth, we are just its eyes." "And its fangs," the cloaked figure added. "Yes, and its fangs," he agreed before bowing. Without another word, the shadowed assassin disappeared back into the blackness from whence he came. The cloaked figure remained for another ten minutes, then he too turned and vanished from the Emerileen Forest. A Traitor's Heart Although peace has remained within the Kingdom of Baevar during the Dragos' reign, there are some that want a change. As the Shadows--an elite guild of deadly assassins--rise from the darkness, the opportunity for chaos and strife begins. Led by a mysterious cloaked figure, trouble spreads throughout the kingdom. Doubts and distrust surface. Friendships are strained. Loyalties are tested. In the end, the most dangerous of enemies are those closest to the heart.

Book Synopsis The Long, Long Life of Trees by : Fiona Stafford
Download or read book The Long, Long Life of Trees written by Fiona Stafford and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lyrical tribute to the diversity of trees, their physical beauty, their special characteristics and uses, and their ever-evolving meanings Since the beginnings of history trees have served humankind in countless useful ways, but our relationship with trees has many dimensions beyond mere practicality. Trees are so entwined with human experience that diverse species have inspired their own stories, myths, songs, poems, paintings, and spiritual meanings. Some have achieved status as religious, cultural, or national symbols. In this beautifully illustrated volume Fiona Stafford offers intimate, detailed explorations of seventeen common trees, from ash and apple to pine, oak, cypress, and willow. The author also pays homage to particular trees, such as the fabled Ankerwyke Yew, under which Henry VIII courted Anne Boleyn, and the spectacular cherry trees of Washington, D.C. Stafford discusses practical uses of wood past and present, tree diseases and environmental threats, and trees’ potential contributions toward slowing global climate change. Brimming with unusual topics and intriguing facts, this book celebrates trees and their long, long lives as our inspiring and beloved natural companions.
Book Synopsis Trees for Everyone - Easy Tree Studies for All Seasons of the Year by : Julia Ellen Rogers
Download or read book Trees for Everyone - Easy Tree Studies for All Seasons of the Year written by Julia Ellen Rogers and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-02-15 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was late April when I came by. As I looked up into that tree top the sunlight was shining through, and at first I thought I must be dreaming. Instead of buds, I saw what seemed like lighted candles, each with a silken frill, like the recurved petals of an iris, below the tip of flame! I had never seen a tree thus illuminated, and the sight was enchanting. The warm spring air had brought out the hickory buds, with those of other trees, and while I was looking for flowers on the ground, the buds above had swollen, cast off the winter covers, revealing the silky inner wrappings of the young shoots. The rich downward-curving "petals" were only the inner scales of the great buds, grown long and wide, their vivid orange setting off the compact yellow buds that still stood erect... I had never seen a hickory tree opening its iris-like buds before, but I have never missed it since. [From Chapter 1]

Book Synopsis The Hanging Tree by : V. A. C. Gatrell
Download or read book The Hanging Tree written by V. A. C. Gatrell and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1994 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of mentalities, emotions, and attitudes rather than of policies and ideas, it analyses responses to the scaffold at all social levels: among the crowds which gathered to watch executions; among 'polite' commentators from Boswell and Byron on to Fry, Thackeray, and Dickens; and among the judges, home secretary, and monarch who decided who should hang and who should be reprieved. Drawing on letters, diaries, ballads, broadsides, and images, as well as on poignant appeals for mercy which historians until now have barely explored, the book surveys changing attitudes to death and suffering, 'sensibility' and 'sympathy', and demonstrates that the long retreat from public hanging owed less to the growth of a humane sensibility than to the development of new methods of punishment and law enforcement, and to polite classes' deepening squeamishness and fear of the scaffold crowd.
