Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ebook is an introduction into China's cadre management focusing on the institutional mechanisms and organizational processes that allow the CCP to exert control and power over its state apparatus. By means of selection and appointment, the Party continues to influence career mobility of its agents. Mobility patterns reflect first and foremost the political priorities of the party-state, but also the more comprehensive development goals of the state. Moreover, control over selection and appointment assures a certain degree of coherence within the state apparatus and allows the Party to preserve the existing political structure and its monopoly over claims on power. Julia Marinaccio graduated with a BA and an MA in Chinese Studies from the Department of East Asian Studies, University of Vienna. After her graduation she pursued further studies in Taiwan and completed an additional MA in Political Science at the National Chengchi University in 2013. Upon her return to Austria she embarked on a PhD project on capacity building in the Chinese bureaucracy. She is currently holding a research and teaching position at the Department of East Asian Studies, University of Vienna. Her research focuses on cadre management and environmental governance in China, and social movements in Taiwan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Has China become just another capitalist country in a socialist cloak? Will the Chinese Communist Party's rule survive the next ten years of modernization and globalization? Frank Pieke investigates these conundrums in this fascinating account of how government officials are trained for placement in the Chinese Communist Party. Through in-depth interviews with staff members and aspiring trainees, he shows that while the Chinese Communist Party has undergone a radical transformation since the revolutionary years under Mao, it is still incumbent upon cadres, who are selected through a highly rigorous process, to be ideologically and politically committed to the party. It is the lessons learnt through their teachers that shape the political and economic decisions they will make in power. The book offers unique insights into the structure and the ideological culture of the Chinese government, and how it has reinvented itself over the last three decades as a neo-socialist state.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charlotte P. Lee considers organizational changes taking place within the contemporary Chinese Communist Party (CCP), examining the party's renewed emphasis on an understudied but core set of organizations: party-managed training academies or 'party schools'. This national network of organizations enables party authorities to exert political control over the knowledge, skills, and careers of officials. Drawing on in-depth field research and novel datasets, Lee finds that the party school system has not been immune to broader market-based reforms but instead has incorporated many of the same strategies as actors in China's hybrid, state-led private sector. In the search for revenue and status, schools have updated training content and become more entrepreneurial as they compete and collaborate with domestic and international actors. This book draws attention to surprising dynamism located within the party, in political organizations thought immune to change, and the transformative effect of the market on China's political system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term “nomenklatura’’ means “nomenclature,’’ “a list of positions, arranged in order of seniority, including a description of the duties of each office. Perhaps the major instrument of Communist Party control of contemporary China’s political, economic, social, and cultural institutions is the nomenklatura system. The system consists of lists of leading positions, over which party units exercise the power to make appointments and dismissals; lists of reserves or candidates for these positions; and institutions and processes for making the appropriate personnel changes. China’s nomenklatura system has evolved to suit the needs of party leaders to control the state, develop the economy, and ensure that party policies are carried out throughout society.

Book excerpt: The Chinese Communist Party (CCP), with nearly 90 million members, is the largest ruling political party in the world. Its power and influence reach into every corner of state, society and economy in China. Given the CCP’s omnipresence, in-depth knowledge of how the CCP is organised and managed and how it will likely evolve is of paramount importance and is a basic prerequisite for understanding China’s rise. By bringing together the best scholarship on the CCP, covering areas such as organisation, cadre management, recruitment and training, ideology and propaganda, factions and elites, reform and adaptation, corruption and law, this collection provides a key to open the black box of Chinese politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few issues affect the future of China--and hence all the nations that interact with China--more than the nature of its ruling party and government. In this timely study, David Shambaugh assesses the strengths and weaknesses, durability, adaptability, and potential longevity of China's Communist Party (CCP). He argues that although the CCP has been in a protracted state of atrophy, it has undertaken a number of adaptive measures aimed at reinventing itself and strengthening its rule. Shambaugh's investigation draws on a unique set of inner-Party documents and interviews, and he finds that China's Communist Party is resilient and will continue to retain its grip on power.
