Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training of an Infantry Company This booklet has not been written for the use and benefit of officers and non commissioned officers of long experience and proved skill in the profession of training men for battle. To such as these it may only provide an object of criticism, for in the course of years spent in turning recruits into trained soldiers they will have formulated to themselves, and adopted, some system of training which they found productive of the best results under their own guidance. But there are many at present, and at a future time, should certain circumstances arise in the life of the nation, there may be very many more who may not have such stores of experience to draw on, and yet may be faced with the problem of rapidly converting an untrained or only partially trained body of men into a force capable of acting successfully in real war, both in attack and defence against trained and disciplined troops. Again, it is written, not for officers commanding battalions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis A Trial Program for Selection to Infantry Training Brigade Company Command by : Michael D. Matthews
Download or read book A Trial Program for Selection to Infantry Training Brigade Company Command written by Michael D. Matthews and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This research evaluated a trial program in which carefully selected, volunteer senior first lieutenants and junior captains were assigned to U.S. Army Infantry Training Brigade company command prior to completing the Infantry Captains Career Course (ICCC). Pre-ICCC commanders were promised a fellow-on command in an operational unit and served in the ITB command for 11 months, versus the standard 18 months. The job performance, leadership, organizational and training management skills, and turbulence effects of the shorter command tour of captains in the trial program (Pre-ICCC commanders) were compared to captains who assumed command after completing ICCC (Post-ICCC commanders). A combination of surveys and interviews with drill sergeants, battalion commanders, battalion command sergeants major, and the company commanders was conducted. Results showed Pre-ICCC company commanders received as high or higher ratings than Post-ICCC commanders. Turbulence effects were rated as minimal to moderate and were minimized by various management techniques. Battalion commanders spent relatively greater time developing Pre-ICCC commanders, but the Pre-ICCC commanders' great enthusiasm and motivation compensated for their lack of experience.."--DTIC.
