Book excerpt: This facsimile edition of Alex Josey’s Lee Kuan Yew: The Crucial Years (1968) contains practically everything that Singapore’s first prime minister had said politically since his student days at Cambridge right up to his speeches at the 1971 Commonwealth Prime Minister’s Conference held in Singapore. More than a political biography of a remarkable Asian statesman, this indispensable volume shows how Lee successfully created an independent multiracial nation while tackling and solving problems which confront all developing states. The account ends in 1970 when Singapore was faced with the gloomy prospect of the withdrawal of British troops in 1971, and the necessity of creating, almost overnight, a credible Singapore defence force.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this rich and rewarding memoir, T.K. Taylor describes his experiences in schools from Kuala Lumpur to Johore Bahru. Full of vivid anecdote and sharply observed historical detail, his writing takes us from his first days spent adapting the Western curriculum to local schools' needs to his time as Chief Education Officer for Selangor state, showing the role of education in the transition to independence. Taylor's career began in 1946, when he was appointed as Senior Master in English at King Edward VII High School in Taiping, a city of over 50,000 in the North near the Thai border. He rose through the ranks, becoming Head Master at English High Schools in Klang, the port for Kuala Lumpur and Johore, before he took over as Chief Education Officer for Selangor. Taylor outlines the development of education and the adaptation of English-medium teaching to students from different ethnic backgrounds, and describes the role of non-English schools, particularly Malay, Chinese and Indian. His account is rich with descriptions and insight into the politics, social conditions and cultural life of Malaya at the time, gained from his experiences living in different towns, working with people from a wide range of backgrounds and inspecting schools in remote areas. As a New Zealander, Taylor also brings a rare Commonwealth perspective to his time in the Colonial Service. "Sunset of Empire in Malaya" brings new insight into the workings of the Colonial Service in a period of enormous change as its officers helped to rebuild the country in the aftermath of World War II and Japanese occupation, Communist struggles and the dawn of independence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War II, agents of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) infiltrated Japanese-occupied Malaya. There they worked with Malayan guerrilla groups, including the communist-sponsored Malayan Peoples Anti-Japanese Army (MPAJA), regarded as the precursor of the communist insurgent army of the Malayan Emergency. This book traces the development of SOE's Malayan operations, and analyses the interactions between SOE and the various guerrilla groups. It explores the reasons for and the extent of Malay disillusionment with Japanese rule, and demonstrates how guerrilla service acted as a training ground for some later Malay leaders of the independent nation. However, the reports written about the MPAJA by SOE operatives just after the war failed to draw out the likely future threat posed by the communists to the returning colonial administration. Rebecca Kenneison shows that the British possessed a wealth of local information, but failed to convert it into active intelligence in the period prior to the Malayan Emergency. In doing so she provides new insights into the impact of SOE on Malayan politics, the nature of Malayan communism's challenge to colonial rule, and British post-war intelligence in Malaya.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Red Star Over Malaya is an account of the inter-racial relations between Malays and Chinese during the final stages of the Japanese occupation. In 1947, none of the three major race of Malaya - Malays, Chinese, and Indians - regarded themselves as pan-ethnic "e;Malayans"e; with common duties and problems. With the occupation forcibly cut them off from China, Chinese residents began to look inwards towards Malaya and stake political claims, leading inevitably to a political contest with the Malays. As the country advanced towards nationhood and self-government, there was tension between traditional loyalties to the Malay rulers and the states, or to ancestral homelands elsewhere, and the need to cultivate an enduring loyalty to Malaya on the part of those who would make their home there in future. As Japanese forces withdrew from the countryside, the Chinese guerrillas of the communist-led resistance movement, the Malayan People's Anti-Japanese Army (MPAJA), emerged from the jungle and took control of some 70 per cent of the country's smaller towns and villages, seriously alarming the Malay population. When the British Military Administration sought to regain control of these liberated areas, the ensuing conflict set the tone for future political conflicts and marked a crucial stage in the history of Malaya. Based on extensive archival research, Red Star Over Malaya provides a riveting account of the way the Japanese occupation reshaped colonial Malaya, and of the tension-filled months that followed Japan's surrender. This book is fundamental to an understanding of social and political developments in Malaysia during the second half of the 20th century.
